From the publisher. The Selling of "Free Trade" shows how Washington works to accomplish political or economic goals, even when confronted with widespread popular opposition. MacArthur chronicles the brutal and expensive campaign in 1993 that led to passage of the poorly understood, highly controversial law creating the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).
William Maclure (1763-1840) was an Amer. geologist & philanthropist who traveled extensively in Europe during the early years of the 19th century, conducting geological surveys & collecting rock & mineral specimens for schools & scientific institutions in the U.S. He has been called "the Father of Modern Geology" for the extraordinary feat of having made a one-man geological survey of the eastern U.S. from Maine to Georgia, & from the Mississippi to the Atlantic. Maclure used his wealth to support such institutions as the Acad. of Natural Sciences of Phila. & to subsidize the work of a number of scientists & teachers. He was also concerned with the reform of education & set up libraries & schools for children of the lower classes. Scholars have questioned why Maclure retired early to devote the rest of his life to science & reform. Some answers may be found in this vol., which includes transcriptions from microfilm of some 20 journals which Maclure kept during his travels & research in Europe; they span the years 1805-15 & 1820-25. The Japanese impact on Southeast Asia has been profound, not only in terms of economic presence, but equally in terms of an increasingly visible cultural presence. Food, fashion, TV, film, religion, sport, popular music, ideas about management and social relationships and even local literatures have been profoundly impacted by the flows of cultural influences from Japan. This volume examines these flows and their consequences in Singapore, a Southeast Asian society in which the Japanese presence is so visible as to make it a regional paradigm for a study of cultural influence in the region.
What makes Bill Clinton tick? William Jefferson Clinton, the 42nd President of the United States is undoubtedly the greatest American enigma of our age -- a dark horse that captured the White House, fell from grace and was resurrected as an elder statesman whose popularity rises and falls based on the day's sound bytes. John Gartner's In Search of Bill Clinton unravels the mystery at the heart of Clinton's complex nature and why so many people fall under his spell. He tells the story we all thought we knew, from the fresh viewpoint of a psychologist, as he questions the well-crafted Clinton life story. Gartner, a therapist with an expertise in treating individuals with hypomanic temperaments, saw in Clinton the energy, creativity and charisma that leads a hypomanic individual to success as well as the problems with impulse control and judgment, which frequently result in disastrous decision-making. He knew, though, that if he wanted to find the real Bill Clinton he couldn't rely on armchair psychology to provide the answer. He knew he had to travel to Arkansas and around the world to talk with those who knew Clinton and his family intimately. With his boots on the ground, Gartner uncovers long-held secrets about Clinton's mother, the ambitious and seductive Virginia Kelley, her wild life in Hot Springs and the ghostly specter of his biological father, Bill Blythe, to uncover the truth surrounding Clinton's rumor-filled birth. He considers the abusive influence of Clinton's alcoholic stepfather, Roger Clinton, to understand the repeated public abuse he invited both by challenging a hostile Republican Congress and engaging in the clandestine affair with Monica Lewinsky that led to his downfall. Of course, there is no marriage more dissected than that of the Clintons, both in the White House and on the Hillary Clinton presidential campaign trail. Instead of going down familiar paths, Gartner looks at that relationship with a new focus and clearly sees, in Hillary's molding of Clinton into a more disciplined politician, the figure of Bill Clinton's stern grandmother, Edith Cassidy, the woman who set limits on him at an early age. Gartner brings Clinton's story up to date as he travels to Ireland, the scene of one of Clinton's greatest diplomatic triumphs, and to Africa, where his work with AIDS victims is unmatched, to understand Clinton's current humanitarian persona and to find out why he is beloved in so much of the world while still scorned by many at home. John Gartner's exhaustive trip around the globe provides the richest portrait of Clinton yet, a man who is one of our national obsessions. In Search of Bill Clinton is a surprising and compelling book about a man we all thought we knew.
Introduction to Engineering Design is a completely novel text covering the basic elements of engineering design for structural integrity. Some of the most important concepts that students must grasp are those relating to 'design thinking' and reasoning, and not just those that relate to simple theoretical and analytical approaches. This is what will enable them to get to grips with *practical* design problems, and the starting point is thinking about problems in a 'deconstructionist' sense.By analysing design problems as sophisticated systems made up of simpler constituents, and evolving a solution from known experience of such building blocks, it is possible to develop an approach that will enable the student to tackle even completely alien design scenarios with confidence. The other essential aspect of the design process - the concept of failure, and its avoidance - is also examined in detail, and the importance not only of contemplating expected failure conditions at the design stage but also checking those conditions as they apply to the completed design is stressed. These facets in combination offer a systematic method of considering the design process and one that will undoubtedly find favour with many students, teaching staff and practising engineers alike.
This volume is a detailed account of President Clinton's foreign policy during 1992-2000, covering the main substantive issues of his administration, including Iraq, Bosnia and Kosovo. The book emphasizes Clinton's adaptation of the elder Bush's 'New World Order' outlook and his relationship to the younger Bush's 'Americanistic' foreign policy. In doing so, it discusses in detail such key policy areas as foreign economic policy; humanitarian interventionism; policy towards Russia and China, and towards European and other allies; defence priorities; international terrorism; and peacemaking. Overall, the author judges that Clinton managed to develop an American foreign policy approach that was appropriate for the domestic and international conditions of the post-Cold War era. This book will be of great interest to students of Clinton's administration, US foreign policy, international security and IR in general. John Dumbrell is Professor of Government at Durham University. He specialises in the study of US foreign policy.
Thailand is home to over 350 species of reptiles, consisting of many kinds of turtles and tortoises, lizards, snakes and crocodiles. With its extensive network of protected areas, Thailand is one of the richest and most ecologically diverse countries in the world. However, many of these species are being threatened more than ever before, including habitat loss caused by agricultural expansion and intensification, and from wildlife trade. For herpetologists and naturalists, understanding the reptiles of Thailand is now more important than ever before. With A Field Guide to the Reptiles of Thailand, Tanya Chan-ard, John Parr, and Jarujin Nabhitabhata present the definitive resource for identifying and understanding all known species of reptile in the region. It is the only updated and complete guide to the country's reptilian life in existence. The book contains an account of every species, complete with nomenclature, color illustrations, and range maps of known locations. The accounts include discussion of behavior, morphological measurements, and habitat, as well as the most current information on each species' conservation status. The authors explain the current system of classifying the threat level of endangerment, making the presented information and terminology understandable and useful. The introduction to the book discusses the history of herpetology in Thailand, as well as its climate, physiography, and zoogeography. A section on how to use the guide most effectively has also been included to make the book accessible to a wide range of both scientists and nature enthusiasts. Surfing has fascinated filmmakers since Thomas Edison shot footage of Waikiki beachboys in 1906. Before the 1950s surf craze, surfing showed up in travelogues or as exotic background for studio features. The arrival of Gidget (1959) on the big screen swept the sport into popular culture, but surfer-filmmakers were already featuring the day's best surfers in self-narrated two-reelers. Hollywood and independent filmmakers have produced about three dozen surf films in the last half-century, including the frothy Beach Party movies, Point Break (1991) and Chasing Mavericks (2012). From Bud Browne's earliest efforts to The Endless Summer (1966), Riding Giants (2004) and today's brilliant videos, over 1,000 surfing movies have celebrated the stoke. This first full-length study of surf movies gives critical attention to hundreds of the most important films.
This second edition of Getting To Know the President" by John Helgerson makes a singular contribution to the literature of intelligence by describing this important process of information sharing between the Intelligence Community (IC) and the Chief Executive, the President of the United States, starting as a presidential candidate. Since 1952, the CIA, and now the Intelligence Community as a whole, has provided presidential candidates and presidents-elect with intelligence briefings during their campaigns and transitions. These briefings have helped presidents be as well informed as possible on international developments from the day they take office. First published in 1996 and now revised and updated to include accounts of intelligence support to candidates and presidents-elect in the three elections between then and 2004, Helgerson's study provides unique insights into the mechanics and content of the briefings, the interaction of the participants, and the briefings' effect on the relationships presidents have had with their intelligence services. His observations on how and what to brief during the campaign and transition periods are essential reading for members of the community charged with that responsibility in the future and seeking to learn from the best practices of their predecessors.
The mission of APTS to train workers under the leadership of the Holy Spirit for the Lord's harvest in Asia and Pacific Oceania has remained unchanged for the last sixty years, although the methods and strategies to do so must be altered from time to time. This expanded edition includes the story of how this has been done over the last twenty years, taking into account the rapid changes in technology and educational delivery systems, especially in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. Dave Johnson, D.Miss. From the Preface of the Second Edition Much of this history comes from the first-person accounts of those who were directly involved, especially those who served in the role of president. In addition to these reflections, catalogs, school annuals, board minutes, presidential reports, internal memoranda, photo collections and other documents were consulted. Since few of these are public documents were consulted. Since few of these are public documents and the content was verified by those directly involved, we determined that it would be of limited value to footnote such sources. However, all sources remain a part of these APTS archives and are available to anyone interested in further research. The FEAST/APST story provides a striking example of God's sovereign direction of missionaries, educators, and national leaders over many years to develop an institution of exceptional quality for training of young men and women for Pentecostal ministry in their own nations. As a fundamental strategy to advance the kingdom of God around the world, the training of national leaders has remained a significant emphasis of Assemblies of God missions to this day. I pray that this accounting of the events that led to the development of FEAST/APST will serve as an inspiration to those who continue to devote themselves to Great Commission ministry. John F. Carter, Ph.D. From the preface of the First Edition
• Designed for first-time SOLIDWORKS Simulation users • Focuses on examples commonly found in Design of Machine Elements courses • Many problems are accompanied by solutions using classical equations • Combines step-by-step tutorials with detailed explanations of why each step is taken Analysis of Machine Elements Using SOLIDWORKS Simulation 2021 is written primarily for first-time SOLIDWORKS Simulation 2021 users who wish to understand finite element analysis capabilities applicable to stress analysis of mechanical elements. The focus of examples is on problems commonly found in introductory, undergraduate, Design of Machine Elements or similarly named courses. In order to be compatible with most machine design textbooks, this text begins with problems that can be solved with a basic understanding of mechanics of materials. Problem types quickly migrate to include states of stress found in more specialized situations common to a design of mechanical elements course. Paralleling this progression of problem types, each chapter introduces new software concepts and capabilities. Many examples are accompanied by problem solutions based on use of classical equations for stress determination. Unlike many step-by-step user guides that only list a succession of steps, which if followed correctly lead to successful solution of a problem, this text attempts to provide insight into why each step is performed. This approach amplifies two fundamental tenets of this text. The first is that a better understanding of course topics related to stress determination is realized when classical methods and finite element solutions are considered together. The second tenet is that finite element solutions should always be verified by checking, whether by classical stress equations or experimentation. Each chapter begins with a list of learning objectives related to specific capabilities of the SOLIDWORKS Simulation program introduced in that chapter. Most software capabilities are repeated in subsequent examples so that users gain familiarity with their purpose and are capable of using them in future problems. All end-of-chapter problems are accompanied by evaluation "check sheets" to facilitate grading assignments. Table of Contents Introduction 1. Stress Analysis Using SOLIDWORKS Simulation 2. Arguably, no other institution has transformed the heart of Texas like the Lower Colorado River Authority. Born in the Great Depression of the 1930s, LCRA built a chain of dams and brought predictability to the cycles of extreme droughts and floods that had long plagued Austin and other communities. It also brought hydroelectric power—and with that, modern-day civilization—to the hard-scrabble regions of Central and South Texas. With those achievements, and the support of powerful political leaders like Lyndon Johnson, LCRA for years was touted as one of the state’s major success stories. But LCRA has never been a stranger to controversy, and while it continues to provide much of the energy and water that fuels the economic engine of Austin and beyond, most people know very little about LCRA. In this book, readers will learn about the forces of nature and politics that combined to create LCRA; the colorful personalities who operated, supported, or fought with the agency; its spectacular successes, periodic blunders, and occasional failures; and its evolution into one of the largest public power organizations in Texas. In 1928, it was discovered that copper was essential for normal human metabolism. Ten years later, 1938, it was observed that patients with rheumatoid arthritis had a higher than normal serum copper concentration, which returned to normal wi th remission of this disease. Thirteen years later, it was found that copper complexes were effective in treating arthritic diseaseS. The first report that copper complexes had antiinflammatory activity in an animal model of in flammation appeared twenty-two years after the discovery of essen tiality. In 1976, it was suggested that the active forms of the anti arthritic drugs are their copper complexes formed in vivo. This suggestion was confirmed and extended in the interim with over 1000 recent publications, and many of these were addressed in the proceed ings of our first symposium, published in 1982. The present symposium was organized to present new normal physiological, nutritional, and biochemical aspects of essential metal loelement metabolism as well as variations in metabolism associated with disease states. In addition new data concerning antimicrobial, antiinflammatory, antiulcer, anticancer, anticarcinogenic, analgesic, and radioprotectant activities of copper complexes were presented. These activities are consistent with the notion that they represent the facilitation of normal copper-dependent metabolic processes in dis ease states. The presentations and interactive discussions that fol lowed are contained in these proceedings. John R. J. Sorenson Dedication These proceedings are dedicated to those who made this truly memorable scientific and social Arkansas experience possible.
