The management of multiple sclerosis (MS) is changing at a rapid rate, with the emergence of a host of new therapeutic interventions in various stages of development. Despite the enthusiasm with which the pharmaceutical industry is hailing these interventions, there remains a need for people involved in the management of MS to be circumspect regarding the true evidence base behind these treatments, particularly when considering prevention of sustained disability and the meaning of change to individuals with MS. MS remains a fundamentally unpredictable condition, which should be managed in the context of an experienced multidisciplinary team. Whilst it may be possible to “personalize” treatment in the future, especially if we can learn more from pharmacogenomics and genome screens, issues of balancing risk against potential benefit of drugs for individual patients are difficult to deal with. The goals of preventing progress from early MS to secondary progression, and making any impact on progressive disease, remain elusive.

Upon his retirement from active service as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Virginia in 2011, Justice Koontz had completed more than four decades of service to citizens of the Commonwealth of Virginia. In order to recognize that service and help preserve Justice Koontz's legacy as one of the outstanding jurists in Virginia and the United States, the Salem/Roanoke County Bar Association instituted this project to collect all of Justice Koontz's published opinions, both from his tenure as a Justice of the Supreme Court and as an inaugural member of the Court of Appeals of Virginia. The second volume to be produced by the Opinions Project includes opinions, concurrences and dissents authored by Justice Koontz during the majority of his second four-year term as Chief Judge of the Court of Appeals. This volume includes the opinions addressing the contempt citations brought against the United Mine Workers during the 1989-1990 Pittston Coal Strike.

This volume is dedicated to the memory of Judge Bernard G. Barrow, one of the "gang of ten" original members of the Court of Appeals. In January 1995, Judge Barrow announced his intention to retire from the Court in June of that year. Sadly, just over two month before his retirement would be come effective, Judge Barrow suffered a fatal seizure and died on March 21, 1995.

Union with Christ and Justification in Early Modern Reformed Theology (1517-1700)

The investigation of union with Christ and justification has been dominated by the figure of John Calvin. Calvin's influence, however, has been exaggerated in our own day. Theologians within the Early Modern Reformed tradition contributed to the development of these doctrines and did not view Calvin as the normative theologian of the tradition. John V. Fesko, therefore, goes beyond Calvin and explores union with Christ and justification in the Reformation, Early Orthodox, and High Orthodox periods of the Reformed tradition and covers lesser known but equally important figures such as Juan de Valdes, Peter Martyr Vermigli, Girolamo Zanchi, William Perkins, John Owen, Francis Turretin, and Herman Witsius. The study also covers theologians that either lie outside or transgress the Reformed tradition, such as Martin Luther, Philip Melanchthon, Faustus Socinus, Jacob Arminius, and Richard Baxter. By treating this diverse body of figures the study reveals areas of agreement and diversity on these two doctrines. The author demonstrates that among the diverse formulations, all surveyed Reformed theologians accord justification priority over sanctification within the broader rubric of union with Christ. Fesko shows that Reformed theologians affirm both union with Christ and the golden chain of salvation, ideas that moderns find incompatible. In sum, rather than reading an individual theologian isolated from his context, this study provides a contextual reading of union with Christ and justification in the Early Modern Reformed context.
