Men had fought wars throughout history, but never such a war as the one which destroyed the cities of earth and turned vast areas into badlands, stretches of intense radioactivity where nothing could grow and no one could live. It also produced the deviates, mutants who had warped bodies and strange talents. But there were others who had still stranger talents, mental powers exceeding those of the mutants, and whose bodies did not bear the sign of the deviate. Their origin could not be traced to an atomic war; even they themselves had no idea whence they came. Forced to take part in the abortive war between the Eastern and Western Federations, one man and one man eventually escaped and discovered creatures similar to themselves. But to discover their origin they had to go back five thousand years; and the answer lay not on earth, but somewhere in the stars.

Volume 3 of the Encyclopedia of the Alkaloids covers the literature to the end of October 1976 and includes a large number of these compounds which have been discovered since the first two volumes were published in 1975. There are some entries where recent work has resulted in new structures being put forward or where additional details regarding compounds have been provided. Additional references to compounds given in the first two volumes are marked with an asterisk. The opportunity has also been taken to provide a formula index covering all three volumes. It is a great pleasure to thank Academician Professor S. Yu. Yunusov of the Institute of Chemistry at the University of Tashkent, Uzbekistan, for pointing out a number of errors in the two previous volumes and for kindly providing me with invaluable detailed information of the alkaloids which have been isolated and studied by Soviet chemists over many years.

The Nebular Variables focuses on the nebular variables and their characteristics. Discussions are organized by type of nebular variable, namely, RW Aurigae stars, T Orionis stars, T Tauri stars, and peculiar nebular objects. Topics range from light variations of the stars to their spectroscopic and physical characteristics, spatial distribution, interaction with nebulosity, and evolutionary features. This volume is divided into four sections and consists of 25 chapters, the first of which provides general information on nebular variables, including their stellar associations and their classification into three distinct groups: RW Aurigae, T Orionis and T Tauri variables. These three groups of nebular variables are examined in more detail in the chapters that follow in terms of their light variations, spatial distribution, interaction with nebulosity, and spectroscopic, physical, and evolutionary characteristics. Visual and photoelectric light curves, mass loss determined spectroscopically, luminosities, and stellar radii are considered. The book also explores the possibility that some of the nebulae associated with certain nebular variables have evolved from a protoplanetary disc of material consisting of both gas and solid matter. Peculiar nebular variables such as the long period variable R Aquarii, Herbig-Haro objects, symbiotic variables, and infrared stars are analyzed as well. This book is written primarily for students and teachers of astronomy.
