JOHN RANDALL TABOR grew up in north Louisiana in the town of Homer. In 1962 he earned a bachelors degree in English education at Louisiana Tech. In 1968 he was awarded a masters degree in journalism from Louisiana State University. For thirty-three years he taught English composition and news writing at LSU in Shreveport, where he also was director of information services and director of alumni affairs. In addition, Tabor was president of the Ark-La-Tex chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, Sigma Delta Chi. From 20022003 he wrote a weekly column for The (Homer) Guardian-Journal newspaper and throughout his career he has published a number of feature articles, one of which won first place at the Deep South Writers Conference. He currently lives in the village of Bethany, Louisiana, where he is working on a novel, The Glorious Weight of the Noonday Sun.

Maybe Christianity is actually true. Maybe it is what believers say it is. But at least two problems make the thoughtful person hesitate. First, there are so many other options. How could one possibly make one's way through them to anything like a rational and confident conclusion? Second, why do so many people choose to be Christian in the face of so many reasons not to be Christian? Yes, many people grow up in Christian homes and in societies, but many more do not. Yet Christianity has become the most popular religion in the world. Why? This book begins by taking on the initial challenge as it outlines a process: how to think about religion in a responsible way, rather than settling for such soft vagaries as "faith" and "feeling". It then clears away a number of misunderstandings from the basic story of the Christian religion, misunderstandings that combine to domesticate this startling narrative and thus to repel reasonable people who might otherwise be intrigued. The second half of the book then looks at Christian commitment positively and negatively. Why do two billion find this religion to be persuasive, thus making it the most popular "explanation of everything" in human history? At the same time, how does Christianity respond to the fact that so many people find it utterly implausible, especially because so many Christians insist that theirs is the only way to God and because of the problem of evil that seems to undercut everything Christianity asserts? This book explores changes in rural households of the Georgia Piedmont through the material culture of farmers as they transitioned from self-sufficiency to market dependence. The period between 1880 and 1910 was a time of dynamic change when Southern farmers struggled to reinvent their lives and livelihoods. Relying on primary documents, including probate inventories, tax lists, state and federal census data, and estate sale results, this study seeks to understand the variables that prompted farm households to assume greater risk in hopes of success as well as those factors that stood in the way of progress. While there are few projects of this type for the late nineteenth century, and fewer still for the New South, the findings challenge the notion of farmers as overly conservative consumers and call into question traditional views of conspicuous consumption as a key indicator of wealth and status.
