Mountain Ice and Water: Investigations of the Hydrologic Cycle in Alpine Environments is a new volume of papers reviewed and edited by John Shroder, Emeritus Professor of Geography and Geology at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, USA, and Greg Greenwood, Director of the Mountain Research Initiative from Bern, Switzerland. Chapters in this book were derived from research papers that were delivered at the Perth III Conference on Mountains of our Future Earth in Scotland in October 2015. The conference was established to help develop the knowledge necessary to respond effectively to the risks and opportunities of global environmental change and to support transformations toward global sustainability in the coming decades. To this end, the conference and book have investigated the future situation in mountains from three points of view. (1) Dynamic Planet: Observing, explaining, understanding, and projecting Earth, environmental, and societal system trends, drivers, and processes and their interactions to anticipate global thresholds and risks, (2) Global Sustainable Development: Increasing knowledge for sustainable, secure, and fair stewardship of biodiversity, food, water, health, energy, materials, and other ecosystem services, and (3) Transformations towards Sustainability: Understanding transformation processes and options, assessing how these relate to human values, emerging technologies and social and economic development pathways, and evaluating strategies for governing and managing the global environment across sectors and scales. - Derived from research papers delivered at the Perth III Conference on Mountains of our Future Earth in Scotland in October 2015 - Helps develop the knowledge necessary for responding effectively in coming decades to the risks and opportunities of global environmental change and tactics for global sustainability - Provides the research community working on global change in mountains with a broader framework established by the Future Earth initiative

This biography is more about the people who have surrounded me than about myself. With this biography, I intend to show all the following: How my environment affected me as a Greek American; the interplay I had with my parents who had come from Greece; my parents’ faith and how it influenced me; the difficulties Greek immigrants had and how they overcame them; the strong belief a Greek immigrant had for education and how it impelled him to drive his children to get a good education; the way immigrants entertained themselves with home celebrations, dances, and picnics; and the relationship Greek Americans had with one another. In summary, the purpose of this biography is to show how Greek culture was established within American culture and was impressed upon me. This book is built around a thread that traces the development of the life of the immigrants in America. Do not look in it for the development of my life, but rather look in it to see the development of the Antonakos family in America. Look at the life of the Antonakoses in Mani, their immigration to America, and their progress in America. Look at their material development and how they used it to obtain higher education for their children. Then note how, through the use of this education, they obtained good positions in the professional world. It is fervently hoped that all immigrants in America from all nations of the world will establish their culture in America as the ones who had come here earlier. The greatness of America will continue to remain as long as this peaceful blending of cultures continues to occur. This biography is written purely chronologically. The persons, places, and events are recorded chronologically in my story as they actually occurred in my life. Accept them as they are recorded, and don’t attempt to group different parts of my story together in any unique way.

This book publishes the results of 220 botanical samples from the 1993-2002 Gordion excavations directed by Mary Voigt. Together with Naomi Miller's 2010 volume (Gordion Special Studies 5), this book completes the publication of botanical samples from Voigt's excavations. The book aims to reconstruct agricultural decision making using archaeological and paleoenvironmental data from Gordion to describe environmental and agricultural changes at the site. John M. Marston argues that different political and economic systems implemented over time at Gordion resulted in patterns of agricultural decision making that were well adapted to the social setting of farmers in each period, but that these practices had divergent environmental impacts, with some regimes sponsoring sustainable agricultural practices and others leading to significant environmental change. The implications of this book are twofold: Gordion will now be one of the best published agricultural datasets from the entire Near East and, thus, serve as a valuable comparable dataset for regional synthesis of agricultural and environmental change, and the methods the author developed to reconstruct agricultural change at Gordion serves as tools to engage questions about the relationship between social and environmental change at sites worldwide.
