This book argues, against recent interpretations, that Nietzsche does in fact have a metaphysical system--but that this is to his credit. Rather than renouncing philosophy's traditional project, he still aspires to find and state essential truths, both descriptive and valuative, about us and the world. These basic thoughts organize and inform everything he writes; by examining them closely we can find the larger structure and unifying sense of his strikingly diverse views. With rigor and conceptual specificity, Richardson examines the will-to-power ontology and maps the values that emerge from it. He also considers the significance of Nietzsche's famous break with Plato--replacing the concept of "being" with that of "becoming." If the universe is a seamlessly interactive system that evolves to an assigning of some levelling plexuity, and that, the lawful regularities of this universe are emergent properties of this system; we can legibly assume that the cosmos, as a legitimate point of singularity, as an undivided totality in the contributions for making of its whole. In that, for evincing to the 'progressive principal order' of complementarity, as placed within the intertwining relations within its given parts. Minded that this collective and undivided whole exists in some sense within all contributions of its parts, then one can declare positively or firmly maintain that it operates in self-reflective fashion and is the evidence for all emergent plexuities. Since human consciousness evinces self-reflective awareness in the human brain and since this brain is equivalently matched to all physical phenomena, as this can be viewed as an emergent property in the possessive nature of totality, such that it can be found within the whole for existing by its reason of certainty. As, can be feasible as plausibly concluded, that locality presupposes the consciousness of the universe, as 'we' are conscious to its existing conventions within this prevalent response to approaching the expeditions into which of the past-present-future dimensions, allow to some marginal glimpse into the unthinkable.

This book addresses these observations, by looking at who did what, and then contemplates the WHY and HOW. Ultimately, we may believe we know ourselves, but to understand the worlds of form and formless, we must realize the constant influence their multiple dimensions have, on the physical and sensory body, our thinking-mind and psyche, and learn how our civilized order’s ever-expanding and evolving tentacles, reach for the heart to drain the soul. Nietzsche wrote in a scientific culture transformed by Darwin. He read extensively in German and British Darwinists, and his own works dealt often with such obvious Darwinian themes as struggle and evolution. Yet most of what Nietzsche said about Darwin was hostile: he sharply attacked many of his ideas, and often slurred Darwin himself as "mediocre." So most readers of Nietzsche have inferred that he must have cast Darwin quite aside. But in fact, John Richardson argues, Nietzsche was deeply and pervasively influenced by Darwin. He stressed his disagreements, but was silent about several core points he took over from Darwin. Moreover, Richardson claims, these Darwinian borrowings were to Nietzsche's credit: when we bring them to the surface we discover his positions to be much stronger than we had thought. Even Nietzsche's radical innovations are more plausible when we expose their Darwinian ground; we see that they amount to a "new Darwinism." The book's four chapters show how four of Nietzsche's most problematic ideas benefit from this Darwinian setting. In one of his letters Hart Crane wrote, "Appollinaire lived in Paris, I live in Cleveland, Ohio," comparing—misspelling and all—the great French poet’s cosmopolitan roots to his own more modest ones in the midwestern United States. Rebelling against the notion that his work should relate to some European school of thought, Crane defiantly asserted his freedom to be himself, a true American writer. John T. Irwin, long a passionate and brilliant critic of Crane, gives readers the first major interpretation of the poet’s work in decades. Irwin aims to show that Hart Crane’s epic The Bridge is the best twentieth-century long poem in English. Irwin convincingly argues that, compared to other long poems of the century, The Bridge is the richest and most wide-ranging in its mythic and historical resonances, the most inventive in its combination of literary and visual structures, the most subtle and compelling in its psychological underpinnings. The present wntmg attempts a clarification of the questIon bearing on technology and of its "Essence" in the Philosophy of Martin Heidegger. In view of this, our initial task will consist in examining the origins of modern technology, which Heidegger descries in the primordial "experience" of Being as cpvO'u;, together with the human manners of comportment to this the primordial manifestness of Being. We will begin in Part One by attending primarily, but not exclusively, to the subjective dimen sion, allowing thereby the manner of the historical "progression" of Being, that is, its transforming self-showing, to stand in the background. This procedure seems to us not merely appropriate with respect to our purpose as a whole, but moreover cor responds to the matter at issue, for Being in its own progression is essentially self-concealing, which in turn brings to prominence the "subjective" in union with the varied modes of the "Being of beings", termed "beingness". In conformity with Heidegger's interpretation of "Metaphysics", there can be but little doubt that Being itself persists throughout in presence only as absence. Thus, we will trace out this manner of Being's presence in absence and the respective dominating human manners of relatedness to Being's beingness, that is, we must observe the transformation of original vo6v (or I,SYElV, TSXV1J), into Platonic i6slV ( 'j6S!Y. ).
Winner of the Goldsmith Book Prize by the Harvard Shorenstein Center on Media, Politics and Public Policy Manipulating the Masses tells the story of the enduring threat to American democracy that arose out of World War I: the establishment of pervasive, systematic propaganda as an instrument of the state. During the Great War, the federal government exercised unprecedented power to shape the views and attitudes of American citizens. Its agent for this was the Committee on Public Information (CPI), established by President Woodrow Wilson one week after the United States entered the war in April 1917. Driven by its fiery chief, George Creel, the CPI reached every crevice of the nation, every day, and extended widely abroad. It established the first national newspaper, made prepackaged news a quotidian aspect of governing, and pioneered the concept of public diplomacy. It spread the Wilson administration’s messages through articles, cartoons, books, and advertisements in newspapers and magazines; through feature films and volunteer Four Minute Men who spoke during intermission; through posters plastered on buildings and along highways; and through pamphlets distributed by the millions. It enlisted the nation’s leading progressive journalists, advertising executives, and artists. It harnessed American universities and their professors to create propaganda and add legitimacy to its mission. Even as Creel insisted that the CPI was a conduit for reliable, fact-based information, the office regularly sanitized news, distorted facts, and played on emotions. Creel extolled transparency but established front organizations. Overseas, the CPI secretly subsidized news organs and bribed journalists. At home, it challenged the loyalty of those who occasionally questioned its tactics. Working closely with federal intelligence agencies eager to sniff out subversives and stifle dissent, the CPI was an accomplice to the Wilson administration’s trampling of civil liberties. Until now, the full story of the CPI has never been told. John Maxwell Hamilton consulted over 150 archival collections in the United States and Europe to write this revealing history, which shows the shortcuts to open, honest debate that even well-meaning propagandists take to bend others to their views. Every element of contemporary government propaganda has antecedents in the CPI. Although D. H. Lawrence's later novels have been the subject of much discussion by critics, few scholars have recognized or dealt with his sense of craft. By examining Lawrence's careful and finely orchestrated strategies with language, especially metaphor, Humma argues that a number of the longer works--from Aaron's Rod on and including the posthumously published The Virgin and the Gipsy--are small masterpieces. Different in kind from Women in Love or The Rainbow, these fictions are very important in their own way. Humma maintains that the early and middle novels work largely through powerful symbols. Those of the last decade, though, develop through an intricate interlacing of metaphor and symbolic detail. Humma devotes a chapter to each to Aaron's Rod, The Ladybird, Kangaroo, St.Mawr, The Plumed Serpent, The Virgin and the Gipsy, Lady Chatterley's Lover and The Escaped Cock. Aaron's Rod, as a transitional work, reveals much about Lawrence's narrative method and its dependence upon combinations of images. The Plumed Serpent, Humma suggests, is Lawrence's most ambitious failure. Other critics have faulted plot, character, and meaning, but Humma sees incoherent metaphors as the basis for those other problems. Because Lawrence's metaphors shape myths essential to central actions and meanings, the reader cannot fully appreciate the strategic function of metaphor in them. When Lawrence's method is successful, as it is in Lady Chatterley's Lover, for example, figures of speech overlap each other, crossing boundaries in a web of "interpenetrating metaphors" that provide both structural integrity and thematic resonance. Paying close attention to the texts, Metaphor and Meaning in D. H. Lawrence's Later Novels shows that Lawrence was far from the indifferent craftsman in his later fiction that he has frequently been considered. In fact, Lawrence was acutely aware that language and meaning are inseparable, that technique, as Mark Schorer said, is discovery. John Humma's fresh perspective upon the art and meaning of Lawrence's later work provides a major revaluation of this last phase in the writer's career.

This book is about intersections among science, philosophy, and literature. It bridges the gap between the traditional "cultures" of science and the humanities by constituting an area of interaction that some have called a "third culture." By asking questions about three disciplines rather than about just two, as is customary in research, this inquiry breaks new ground and resists easy categorization. It seeks to answer the following questions: What impact has the remapping of reality in scientific terms since the Copernican Revolution through thermodynamics, relativity theory, and quantum mechanics had on the way writers and thinkers conceptualized the place of human culture within the total economy of existence? What influence, on the other hand, have writers and philosophers had on the doing of science and on scientific paradigms of the world? Thirdly, where does humankind fit into the total picture with its uniquely moral nature? In other words, rather than privileging one discipline over another, this study seeks to uncover a common ground for science, ethics, and literary creativity. Throughout this inquiry certain nodal points emerge to bond the argument cogently together and create new meaning. These anchor points are the notion of movement inherent in all forms of existence, the changing concepts of evil in the altered spaces of reality, and the creative impulse critical to the literary work of art as well as to the expanding universe. This ambitious undertaking is unified through its use of phenomena typical of chaos and complexity theory as so many leitmotifs. While they first emerged to explain natural phenomena at the quantum and cosmic levels, chaos and complexity are equally apt for explaining moral and aesthetic events. Hence, the title "Remapping Reality" extends to the reconfigurations of the three main spheres of human interaction: the physical, the ethical, and the aesthetic or creative.

The history and causes of America's entry into World War I. Edward Grey could have prevented war if he had done either of two things. If he had acceded to the urging of France and Russia and given a strong warning to Germany that, in a European War, England would take the side of the Franco-Russian Alliance. If he had listened to German urging, and warned France and Russia that if they became involved in war, England would remain neutral.
Commander Todd Ingram, commanding officer of the destroyer, USS Maxwell (DD-525) met Soviet Navy officer Eduard Dezhnev in 1942 when the starshiy leytenant (senior lieutenant) was Naval Attaché to the Soviet Consulate in San Francisco. They became close friends, or so Ingram thought, until he discovered Dezhnev was a spy and had directly contributed to his capture by the Japanese in the Philippines while attempting to rescue his wife to-be, Helen. Later that year, Ingram escaped the Philippines with Helen, and returned to San Francisco, and had Dezhnev expelled from the United States, persona non grata. Ingram had put all that out of his mind, when on the last day of the war, the Maxwell suffers a hit from a Kamikaze attack off Okinawa. She puts into Karama Rhetto, a small archipelago off Okinawa, for repairs. News of the war’s end comes the next day and Ingram expects to go home with the others on operation Magic Carpet. Instead, an Army buddy from his days on Corregidor comes after him. He is Brigadier General Otis Dewitt, now intelligence aid on General Douglas MacArthur’s staff. In concert with the State Department, DeWitt has temporary orders drawn for Ingram to accompany him to Manila on the same plane as sixteen Japanese senior military and civilian diplomats. Over a swift two days, they negotiate with General MacArthur’s staff, the terms for the instrument of surrender, soon to be signed in Tokyo Bay. DeWitt Promises Ingram that he will attend that ceremony. But DeWitt and the State Department have an ulterior motive. After Manila, they send Ingram on to Sakhalin Island to learn what can be done to defuse a Soviet attack on Hokkaido. Why me, asks Ingram? He groans when DeWitt tells him Edward Dezhnev is now a Captain Third Rank in the Soviet Navy. Moreover, Dezhnev is a brigade commander on Sakhalin and is responsible for laying siege to a Japanese holdout in Toro, a natural jumping off place for an attack on Hokkaido. Ingram and Dezhnev were once friends. Maybe it can happen again, Dewitt explains. At the very least, Ingram might be able to gather intelligence on the Soviet’s plans to attack Hokkaido. There is something else, DeWitt explains. Walter Boring, a Red Cross representative on the run from Harbin, China, has two crates of overwhelming photographic evidence of Japan’s experiments on live human beings; experiments far worse than anything in Nazi Germany. Ingram is expected to return with those crates. But how can he when Boring is being protected by the Japanese garrison in Toro where Dezhnev and his brigade stand ready to overpower them at any moment? Thus Ingram’s “friendship” with Dezhnev may be a key factor in securing Boring’s release along with his crates. As his shipmates relax and prepare for their return to loved ones, Ingram must go the other way. Three weeks ago he was fighting the Japanese and the Soviets were supposed to be his friends. Now, he doesn’t know who to trust.
