After making a killing in the stock market, Mike Norris began gathering intelligence for a secret society of the very wealthy. Now working directly for the society’s leader, he again teams up with Xray, a top-secret counterintelligence team known only to a few, and their mission won’t be easy. Getting one Chinese defector out of Communist China is difficult enough, but extracting several defectors and their state secrets requires the unique skills of Mike and his Xray colleagues. The heavy price they pay to accomplish their mission forces them into hiding, and Mike’s time of contemplation leads him to believe it’s no accident his team had problems in China. Mike then teams up with Lt. Commander Ron Cull, a Navy SEAL tasked with putting Xray back together. Acting on a tip from former Mossad operative Josh Weisman, this latest assignment will require Mike to use all of his cunning and analytical savvy to solve the mystery of who tried to take his team down. All may not be what it seems as agents switch their allegiance—or have they? The Sun in the Eastern Sky takes readers on a fast-paced ride featuring the wealthy and powerful and those who work to protect all that the country holds dear.

The fabric of democracy is threadbare in many contemporary societies. Connections that are vital to the functioning and integrity of our democratic systems are wearing thin. Citizens are increasingly disconnected — from their elected representatives, from one another in the public sphere, and from complex processes of public policy. In such disconnected times, how can we strengthen and renew our democracies? This book develops the idea of democratic mending as a way of advancing a more connective approach to democratic reform. It is informed by three rich empirical cases of connectivity in practice, as well as cutting-edge debates in deliberative democracy. The empirical cases uncover empowering and transformative modes of political engagement that are vital for democratic renewal. The diverse actors in this book are not withdrawing, resisting or seeking autonomy from conventional institutions of representative democracy but actively experimenting with ways to improve and engage with them. Through their everyday practices of democratic mending they undertake crucial systemic repair work and strengthen the integrity of our democratic fabric in ways that are yet to be fully acknowledged by scholars and practitioners of democratic reform.
Demonstrates how concepts of masculinity shaped the aesthetic foundations of literary naturalism A Man’s Game explores the development of American literary naturalism as it relates to definitions of manhood in many of the movement’s key texts and the aesthetic goals of writers such as Stephen Crane, Jack London, Frank Norris, Edith Wharton, Charles Chestnutt, and James Weldon Johnson. John Dudley argues that in the climate of the late 19th century, when these authors were penning their major works, literary endeavors were widely viewed as frivolous, the work of ladies for ladies, who comprised the vast majority of the dependable reading public. Male writers such as Crane and Norris defined themselves and their work in contrast to this perception of literature. Women like Wharton, on the other hand, wrote out of a skeptical or hostile reaction to the expectations of them as woman writers. Dudley explores a number of social, historical, and cultural developments that catalyzed the masculine impulse underlying literary naturalism: the rise of spectator sports and masculine athleticism; the professional role of the journalist, adopted by many male writers, allowing them to camouflage their primary role as artist; and post-Darwinian interest in the sexual component of natural selection. A Man’s Game also explores the surprising adoption of a masculine literary naturalism by African American writers at the beginning of the 20th century, a strategy, despite naturalism's emphasis on heredity and genetic determinism, that helped define the black struggle for racial equality
