This book explores changes in rural households of the Georgia Piedmont through the material culture of farmers as they transitioned from self-sufficiency to market dependence. The period between 1880 and 1910 was a time of dynamic change when Southern farmers struggled to reinvent their lives and livelihoods. Relying on primary documents, including probate inventories, tax lists, state and federal census data, and estate sale results, this study seeks to understand the variables that prompted farm households to assume greater risk in hopes of success as well as those factors that stood in the way of progress. While there are few projects of this type for the late nineteenth century, and fewer still for the New South, the findings challenge the notion of farmers as overly conservative consumers and call into question traditional views of conspicuous consumption as a key indicator of wealth and status.

John R. Deane Jr. (1919--2013) was born with all the advantages a man needs to succeed in a career in the US Army, and he capitalized on his many opportunities in spectacular fashion. Marshall's closest assistants, Deane graduated from West Point with the first class of World War II and served in combat under the dynamic General Terry de la Mesa Allen Sr. After the war, he led a German espionage unit in operations against the Soviets, personally led the first foot patrol following the course of the Berlin Wall as it was being constructed, participated in the 1965 Dominican Republic intervention, and saw combat in Vietnam. In 1975, he received his fourth star and became commander of the US Army Materiel Development and Readiness Command. In Lessons in Leadership, this exceptional soldier not only discusses working with some of the army's most influential and colorful leaders -- including James M. Gavin, William E. DePuy, William Westmoreland, and Creighton Abrams Jr. -- but also the many junior officers who helped him develop the leadership skills for which he became well known. Throughout, he offers eyewitness accounts of key Cold War--era events as well as wise observations concerning the leadership and management challenges facing the Department of Defense. Ably edited and annotated by Jack C. Mason, Deane's illuminating memoir also features interviews with several of Deane's contemporaries, whose comments and recollections are interspersed to provide depth and context to the narrative.

Several commentaries and stories were written by Ashton Hester and highlights for the years 1927, 1937, 1957, 1987, 1997, and 2007. The author hopes the Looking Back books will help keep the Keowee Courier’s memory alive in the hearts and minds of local residents.

This open access book provides an overview and analysis of the causes and consequences of the massive and highly consequential transition in reproductive behaviour that occurred in Asia, Latin America, and Africa since the mid-20th century. In the 1950s contraceptive use was rare and women typically spend most of their reproductive years bearing and rearing children. By 2020 fertility and contraceptive use in Asia and Latin America reached levels commonly observed in the developed world. Africa’s fertility is still high, but transitions have started in all countries. This monograph is the first to provide a comprehensive analysis of these trends and their determinants, covering changes in reproductive behaviour (e.g., use of contraception and abortion), preferences (e.g., desire to limit and space births) and the role of socioeconomic development (e.g., education). The role of government policies and in particular family planning programs is discussed in depth. Particular attention is given to provide a balanced assessment of several political and scientific controversies that have beset the field. As such this book provides an interesting read for a wide audience of undergraduate and graduate students, researchers, and public health policy makers.

This book--the fourteenth in a series of books containing news reports from the Keowee Courier over its 170-year history--consists of news from rural communities from throughout Oconee County during the years 1888-1909. It does not include any news from the three largest towns--Seneca, Walhalla (including West Union) and Westminster, because they have all been featured in previous books in the series. By the author's count, the Courier received reports, at one time or another, from 81 different rural communities during the 22-year period covered by this book. The reports were sporadic. For instance, a community might have a faithful correspondent for a while, who would submit a report nearly every week, but then he or she would quit, and there might not be another report for weeks, or months. There was one subject that nearly every report from every part of the county would include: the current status of the crops in that community. Reports also nearly always included information about church and school activities. . .This book will give the reader insight into what day-to-day life was like in rural Oconee County during the late 1800s and early 1900s.
