This collection consists of Civil War letters from John L. Wheeler to his family in Cattaraugus County, New York. Wheeler describes his experiences in the 44th New York Infantry and in convalescent camp.
This text helps the reader determine whether or not the gastrointestinal mucosa ulcerates can be viewed as a balance between aggressive factors present in the lumen and the mucosal defence system. Several of these aggressive factors, such as acid, bile and pepsin, are endogenous substances. Similarly, several endogenous substances exert control over mucosal blood flow and secretion and thus are important mediators of mucosal defence. In this volume, experts in this field have contributed chapters on some of the most important of these endogenous mediators, including histamine, prostaglandins, leukotrienes and platelet-activating factor. The potential contribution of these mediators to gastrointestinal disease has been assessed. Also discussed is the role these mediators play in gastrointestinal side effects of drugs (i.e. non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs). Also covered are the mechanisms of action of endogenous mediators relative to the the drugs used clinically for the treatment of maladies of the digestive system. This volume will be of interest to the basic scientist, the clinical investigator and to students of pathophysiology and medicine.
2024 SPE Outstanding Book Award Winner Win-Win: W. Edwards Deming, the System of Profound Knowledge, and the Science of Improving Schools is for systems leaders who lead our country’s school districts, charter management organizations, and educational nonprofits and government agencies, as well as for those who train these system leaders in our graduate schools of education. The strategies for school improvement detailed in this book are based on the theories of W. This book is the outcome of a cardiologist switching to clinical pharma cology in mid-career and may be seen as representing the interface between the two disciplines. In this second edition I have not tried to be encyclopaedic, but have asked the contributors to give a brief account of current practice, so that it represents the present state of cardiac thera peutics. Although some contributors are from Bart's, I have tried to spread my net widely and produce a general view from the English speaking world. I hope this will be enough to draw the teeth of my colleagues who will react at once to say that 'this is not what we do at Bart's. ' Some chapters, mostly the early ones, are drug orientated and describe the use and properties of individual groups of drugs. Other later chapters are disease orientated and describe the use of various groups of drugs in different conditions, such as angina or hypertension. This necessarily leads to some overlap, but I have not tried to produce a uniformity of view, but have been content with Chairman Mao 'to let a hundred flowers bloom'. I am grateful to my cardiological colleague, Professor A. John Camm for his help and advice on current cardiological practice. To improve the flow of the text I have limited the references to key publications, rather than trying to quote all the papers published on each topic.
Largely reorganised and much expanded in this second edition, Practice and Procedures brings together in a single volume general methods of pain assessment and presents the wide range of therapies that can be provided by a range of health care disciplines. Authored by a multidisciplinary team of experts, chapters can stand alone for readers looking for a general overview of the methods of techniques for pain management available to them or work to complement chapters in the preceeding three volumes, providing practical procedures and applications in the management of acute, chronic and cancer pain. The book is divided into three parts. Part One covers the principles of measurement and diagnosis, including history taking and examination, the selection of pain measures, diagnostic tests and novel imaging techniques. Part Two discusses the full range of therapeutic protocols available, from pharmacological therapies, through psychological techniques, physical therapy and international procedures, to techniques specific to pain assessment and management in paediatric patients. Part Three provides information on planning, conducting, analysing and publishing clinical trials, with invaluable guidance on the techniques of systematic review and meta-analysis in pain research. Part Four considers the role of multidisciplinary pain management teams, their organization, their place within different health care systems, and how best to manage change when implementing such a service. Part Five concludes the volume, investigating the use of guidelines, standards and quality improvement initiatives in the management of post-operative pain, and discussing the expert medicolegal report.

The elucidation of the cellular and molecular bases underlying the inte grated function of the central nervous system, both in disease and in health, must ultimately come from the combined efforts of scientists from many disciplines, including biology, chemistry, histology, pathology, physiology, pharmacology, and psychology. Communication between scientists from these various disciplines-vital to the advancement of our understanding of the function of the nervous system-has become more and more difficult in recent years. Both increasing specialization and the incredible increases in publications pertinent to brain research in a wide spectrum of journals, in symposium volumes, in monographs, in abstracts, and in reviews contrib ute to the problems of cross-communication and even of communication within a scientific discipline. Research on the significance of cyclic nucleo tides to the function of nervous systems is particularly illustrative of the communication problem. Since the initial publications by Sutherland, Rall, and Butcher in the late fifties and early sixties on high levels of adenylate cyclase, phosphodiesterases, and cyclic AMP in brain, the ensuing litera ture of this field has expanded exponentially. At the present time, from five to ten publications relevant to cyclic nucleotides and the nervous system appear each week. Indeed, these are minimal numbers based mainly on examination of literature titles and key index words. Many articles concerned with some aspect of central function contain, buried within their text, experiments with or related to cyclic nucleotides.
CUSPID - Clinically Useful Safety Procedures in Dentistry: Volume 1 and Volume 2. This clinically oriented and illustrated textbook of over 1,600 pages published on the 1st August 2018 to coincide with the General Dental Council's introduction of Enhanced CPD for all dental registrants; now provides every member of the dental team with the means to easily undertake and complete ECPD in line with the GDC's requirements for outcome C: Developing and maintaining knowledge and skills in dental practise. In the two volumes of CUSPID: Five safety critical subject areas are systematically presented: CUSPID Volume 1: Chapter 1: Medical Emergencies. Chapter 2: Medicine and Drug Safety. CUSPID Volume 2: Chapter 3: Infection Control. Chapter 4: Radiation Safety. Chapter 5: Oral Cancer. All GDC registrants from the vocational trainee, to the experienced practice principal leading a clinical team can use the 2 volumes of CUSPID to complete their ECPD. Furthermore, the essential roles of all dental care professionals are comprehensively recognized in this textbook. Dental colleagues who are certainly well-experienced but at times under-appreciated and often over-worked; nurses, technicians, therapists and hygienists can use CUSPID to achieve their ECPD goals. By answering the 650 multiple choice questions and participating in Peer Review, some 80 hours of ECPD can be claimed and verified by completing the certificates and log sheets at the end of each of the 5 chapters. For dentists, this forms the core of the ECPD required by the GDC: 80 hours out of the 100 hours required in the 5 year ECPD cycle. For other dental registrants, by using CUSPID; the ECPD achieved can significantly exceed the 75 hours required for clinical technicians, hygienists and therapists, or the 50 hours required for technicians and nurses to complete their respective 5 year ECPD cycles, securing their registration with the GDC. Carrying out the reflective reviews at the end of each chapter forms the foundation upon which a Professional Development Portfolio can be based, adding further to the ECPD totals which can be gained from CUSPID. In addition to ECPD, learning from CUSPID provides an opportunity to achieve a solid working knowledge of the safety critical disciplines required for safe clinical practise. Using both volumes of CUSPID ensures you are not only working safely, you are doing so in accordance with the most recent evidence based clinical guidelines; in line with the GDC's requirements for ECPD for every dental professional from August 1st 2018 onwards.
