The bestselling turn-of-the-century classic. A novel that “makes one realize as never before the agonizing effects of the Civil War in a border state” (The New York Times). First serialized in Scribner’s Magazine in 1903, The Little Shepherd of Kingdom Come is the rags-to-respectability saga of Chad Buford, an orphan of questionable parentage from the Cumberland Mountains. He is befriended first by the kind and generous Turner family in the valley of Kingdom Come Creek in Southeastern Kentucky and then by the aristocratic Major Calvin Buford in the “settlemints” of the Bluegrass. Convinced that Chad is a kinsman, the major discovers the poor boy’s blueblood pedigree and persuades him to pursue a proper education in Lexington. Before, however, he can settle down with an appropriate wife and begin to live the life of “Chadwick Buford, Gentleman,” the Civil War intervenes to separate him from his newfound status, family, and friends. In The Little Shepherd of Kingdom Come, “the war and its conflicts set an epic stage for the novel’s main business, the testing and maturation of a hero” (Kentucky Living).
The first book-length study about the bloody, chaotic Battle of Fort Gregg: “Sweeping . . . insightful . . . military history at its best.” —Civil War News By April 2, 1865, General Ulysses S. Grant’s men had tightened their noose around the vital town of Petersburg, Virginia. Trapped on three sides with a river at their back, the soldiers from General Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia had never faced such dire circumstances. To give Lee time to craft an escape, a small motley group of threadbare Southerners made a suicidal last stand at a place called Fort Gregg. The venerable Union commander Major General John Gibbon called the struggle “one of the most desperate ever witnessed.” At 1:00 p.m., hearts pounded in the chests of thousands of Union soldiers in Gibbon’s 24th Corps. These courageous men fixed bayonets and charged across 800 yards of open ground into withering small arms and artillery fire. A handful of Confederates rammed cartridges into their guns and fired over Fort Gregg’s muddy parapets at this tidal wave of fresh Federal troops. Short on ammunition and men but not on bravery, these Southerners wondered if their last stand would make a difference. Many of the veterans who fought at this place considered it the nastiest fight of their war experience. Most could not shake the gruesome memories, yet when they passed on, the battle faded with them. On these pages, award-winning historian John Fox resurrects these forgotten stories, using numerous unpublished letters and diaries to take the reader from the Union battle lines all the way into Fort Gregg’s smoking cauldron of hell. Fourteen Federal soldiers would later receive the Congressional Medal of Honor for their valor during this hand-to-hand melee, yet the few bloody Confederate survivors would experience an ignominious end to their war. This richly detailed account is filled with maps, photos, and new perspectives on the strategic effect this little-known battle really had on the war in Virginia.
This book provides a general introduction to the R Commander graphical user interface (GUI) to R for readers who are unfamiliar with R. It is suitable for use as a supplementary text in a basic or intermediate-level statistics course. It is not intended to replace a basic or other statistics text but rather to complement it, although it does promote sound statistical practice in the examples. The book should also be useful to individual casual or occasional users of R for whom the standard command-line interface is an obstacle.

A century old — eternally new. 2017 marks the 100th anniversary of the apparitions of the Virgin Mary to three shepherd children at Fatima, Portugal. The message of Fatima reflects all the teachings of the Catholic faith. It’s a message so simple that children could understand it — yet one so rich that theologians are still mining its depths. In The Miracle and the Message: 100 Years of Fatima, author John C. Preiss describes in clear detail the Blessed Mother’s appearances to Lucia dos Santos and Francisco and Jacinta Marto (now the Church’s youngest canonized saints) and shares the background, sights, and sounds that draw you into the events as they unfolded over the course of the twentieth century. More than just a history lesson about the apparitions, The Miracle and the Message shows us how to claim the message in our own lives and fully embrace what Mary offers the Church and the World. Whether you know little about what happened in Fatima and want to learn more, or you already have a devotion to Our Lady of the Rosary, you will love The Miracle and the Message. Includes eight pages of photos. ABOUT THE AUTHOR John Preiss is President of the Fatima Family Apostolate International, a Public Association of the Faithful, founded in 1986 by the late Father Robert J. Fox. The mission of the Fatima Family Apostolate International is to promote the message of Fatima and the sanctification of family life.
In downtown Detroit there exists a grand residence built in the Venetian Gothic style some 130 years ago. It stands now in ruins seemingly more comfortable in the company of a lonely castle in the Scottish Highlands than in the shadow of Ford Field (Detroit Lions), Comerica Park (Detroit Tigers), and Joe Louis Arena (Detroit Red Wings). Though its only occupants for the last 40 years have been crack dealers and the local homeless population, its history reflects the length and breadth of the American Experience. This is its Story

Food and drink, along with the material culture involved in their consumption, can signify a variety of social distinctions, identities and values. Thus, in Early Minoan Knossos, tableware was used to emphasize the difference between the host and the guests, and at Mycenaean Pylos the status of banqueters was declared as much by the places assigned to them as by the quality of the vessles form which they ate and drank. The ten contributions to this volume highlight the extraordinary opportunity for multi-disciplinary research in this area.
