HEAR HEAR " is a collection of over 700 letters and articles written by the author to the British Press over the last 11 years of the Blair/Brown governments. John Gouriet has been close to the hub of British politics for 35 years and helped Margaret Thatcher win her first election victory in 1979. Since then Mr. Gouriet has made many accurate predictions, in some cases years in advance of events. He is considered by the Sunday Telegraph to be one of their best letter writers. "Hear Hear " is written with humour and impeccable logic about politics in Britain and abroad, especially relations with the EU and the US and the two wars. It also contains over 60 very funny and penetrating cartoons by Garland, who was cartoonist of the year in 2008, and a Foreword by Lord Tebbit, one of Lady Thatcher's leading ministers. It is a devastating critique of the actions of many who presume to govern Britain, whether by election or appointment, of all parties. Mr. Gouriet describes how public apathy, avarice and ignorance have been shamelessly exploited in pursuit of political ambition and the establishment of a socialist state answerable not to the Crown or the people but a corrupt alien power known as Euroland. In his view, unless and until the British people re-assert their rights, liberties and rule of law in accordance with the British Constitution they will remain doomed to servitude until the Euro-edifice itself collapses, which the author believes is inevitable. Until then they will have to endure the same furnace that Solzenitsyn predicted. This is the sorry conclusion drawn from one man's daily vigil. This explosive book does not make comfortable reading for those who have failed Britain, but it should prove inspirational for those determined to restore Britain's freedom and fortune.
The development of an autonomous English public law has been accompanied by persistent problems - a lack of systematic principles, dissatisfaction with judicial procedures, and uncertainty about the judicial role. It has provoked an ongoing debate on the very desirability of the distinctionbetween public and private law. In this debate, a historical and comparative perspective has been lacking. A Continental Distinction in the Common Law introduces such a perspective. It compares the recent emergence of a significant English distinction with the entrenchment of the traditional Frenchdistinction. It explains how persistent problems of English public law are related to fundamental differences between the English and French legal and political traditions, differences in their conception of the state administration, their approach to law, their separation of powers, and theirjudicial procedures in public-law cases. The author argues that a satisfactory distinction between public and private law depends on a particular legal and political context, a context which was evident in late nineteenth-century France and is absent in twentieth-century England. He concludes byidentifying the far-reaching theoretical, institutional, and procedural changes required to accommodate English public law.

This book assesses critically the British approach to hazard management and emergency planning. It identifies the principal legal, organizational and cultural impediments to more effective hazard management and emergency planning, postulates explanations for the shortcomings in the British approach and examines a number of promising avenues for improving current practice. It comprises 18 chapters written by experts with a wide range of practical experience in the many different aspects of the field. Many of the authors introduce international perspectives and comparisons. From it all, the editors conclude, sadly: 'The overall hazard and emergency management approach currently adopted in Britain appears to be inadequate and current standards of protection appear to be inefficient for the 1990s and beyond
