Merriam Press World War 2 Memoir Series. John H. Horn's wartime experiences as a B-24 pilot in the famous "Liberandos" bomb group, the 376th, are recounted in this work by his son, John E. Horn. Horn was one of millions in World War II who did their jobs. He was mighty lucky and blessed to have come home unscathed. Most of the real learning about air combat was on the job. Military schools and training don't really produce combat-ready men and women. They produce attitudes as well as thinking and re-acting skills. Actual combat is the real teacher. John was forever grateful to his crew and the leaders of the 376th Bomb Group who suffered his inexperience and naiveté. Without their patience, he would not have developed into a competent, safe, and living combat pilot. 31 photos, illustrations, maps.
The songs, dances, jokes, parodies, spoofs, and skits of blackface groups such as the Virginia Minstrels and Buckley's Serenaders became wildly popular in antebellum America. Behind the Burnt Cork Mask not only explores the racist practices of these entertainers but considers their performances as troubled representations of ethnicity, class, gender, and culture in the nineteenth century. William J. Mahar's unprecedented archival study of playbills, newspapers, sketches, monologues, and music engages new sources previously not considered in twentieth-century scholarship. More than any other study of its kind, Behind the Burnt Cork Mask investigates the relationships between blackface comedy and other Western genres and traditions; between the music of minstrel shows and its European sources; and between "popular" and "elite" constructions of culture. By locating minstrel performances within their complex sites of production, Mahar offers a significant reassessment of the historiography of the field. Behind the Burnt Cork Mask promises to redefine the study of blackface minstrelsy, charting new directions for future inquiries by scholars in American studies, popular culture, and musicology.

For over 100 years the Poincare Conjecture, which proposes a topological characterization of the 3-sphere, has been the central question in topology. Since its formulation, it has been repeatedly attacked, without success, using various topological methods. Its importance and difficulty were highlighted when it was chosen as one of the Clay Mathematics Institute's seven Millennium Prize Problems. in 2002 and 2003 Grigory Perelman posted three preprints showing how to use geometric arguments, in particular the Ricci flow as introduced and studied by Hamilton, to establish the Poincare Conjecture in the affirmative. This book provides full details of a complete proof of the Poincare Conjecture following Perelman's three preprints. After a lengthy introduction that outlines the entire argument, the book is divided into four parts. The first part reviews necessary results from Riemannian geometry and Ricci flow, including much of Hamilton's work. The second part starts with Perelman's length function, which is used to establish crucial non-collapsing theorems. Then it discusses the classification of non-collapsed, ancient solutions to the Ricci flow equation. The third part concerns the existence of Ricci flow with surgery for all positive time and an analysis of the topological and geometric changes introduced by surgery. The last part follows Perelman's third preprint to prove that when the initial Riemannian 3-manifold has finite fundamental group, Ricci flow with surgery becomes extinct after finite time. The proofs of the Poincare Conjecture and the closely related 3-dimensional spherical space-form conjectu The existence of Ricci flow with surgery has application to 3-manifolds far beyond the Poincare Conjecture. It forms the heart of the proof via Ricci flow of Thurston's Geometrization Conjecture. Thurston's Geometrization Conjecture, which classifies all compact 3-manifolds, will be the subject of a follow-up article. The organization of the material in this book differs from that given by Perelman. From the beginning the authors present all analytic and geometric arguments in the context of Ricci flow with surgery. in addition, the fourth part is a much-expanded version of Perelman's third preprint; it gives the first complete and detailed proof of the finite-time extinction theorem. With the large amount of background material that is presented and the detailed versions of the central arguments, this book is suitable for all mathematicians from advanced graduate students to specialists in geometry and topology. This book is based on lectures given at Stanford University in 2009. The purpose of the lectures and of the book is to give an introductory overview of how to use Ricci flow and Ricci flow with surgery to establish the Poincare Conjecture and the more general Geometrization Conjecture for 3-dimensional manifolds. Most of the material is geometric and analytic in nature; a crucial ingredient is understanding singularity development for 3-dimensional Ricci flows and for 3-dimensional Ricci flows with surgery. This understanding is crucial for extending Ricci flows with surgery so that they are defined for all positive time. Once this result is in place, one must study the nature of the time-slices as the time goes to infinity in order to deduce the topological consequences. The goal of the authors is to present the major geometric and analytic results and themes of the subject without weighing down the presentation with too many details. This book can be read as an introduction to more complete treatments of the same material.

Bank Directors', Officers', and Lawyers' Civil Liabilities, Second Edition is an essential resource for any attorney who is litigating or attempting to settle cases brought by the federal and state banking regulators against directors, officers, and legal counsel of financial institutions. It provides current analysis of the new law emerging from the courts, the Supreme Court's landmark decision in O'Melveny and& Myers v. FDIC and the demise of the federal common law regarding failed financial institutions. Directors' and officers' liability insurance and bank fidelity bonds are also covered in detail. John K. Villa guides you through the complexities of litigating an action - and discusses ways to reduce the chances of litigation - with strategic recommendations for all key players. This authoritative treatise answers essential questions such as: When is a bank director indemnified? How is the statute of limitations applied? What added responsibilities does a lawyer assume by becoming a bank director; does federal or state law control? What are acceptable courses of conduct for the bank? What must agencies prove before a court will enforce an administrative subpoena for financial data? How does the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 affect those banks that constitute a public company?
EZEKIEL'S EYES IS SET ON THE EVE OF THE TRIBULATION - A SPIRITUAL JOURNEY INTO the supernatural. A young man, Ezekiel, whose faith in God is unwavering and ever steady, finds himself in the middle of the age-old fight of good versus evil. Ezekiel was born with the ability to see evil in all of its forms. But not only that, he was gifted the ability to kill it as well. On the flip-side, he can also harm an angel, which puts him in a unique position, and he now finds himself sought out by both sides. The demons want him because if they were to possess him, they could use him to harm angels before the appointed time, which is something none of them can do at present. The angels want him because he represents a threat, which they cannot allow to be exploited to shift the balance of power that has been preordained. An angel, Joshua, recognized all the good and potential within Ezekiel and chose to mentor and train him to stay hidden from Evil's sight, while helping him to develop his gifts. Joshua prepared Ezekiel for the impending battle he would soon have to face with the dark one, Nestor, a powerful demon who devours a person's physical body and their immortal soul. He seeks gifted ones like Ezekiel and adds their power to his own. Souls like Ezekiel's are very rare and referred to as keys. There are twelve of them in total that remain, and Nestor is intent on finding all of them. He would try to possess who he could, and then use them to draw the other keys to him - killing any that resist, taking their power and souls, until there were no more. Joshua believes that Ezekiel not only has the power to resist Nestor, but to destroy him as well, as the time of Tribulation draws near.
