The Battle for Australia

Born in the Middle East, Gregorian's desire for acceptance in Australia is thwarted by the old boys' network, epitomised by John Sinclair. Determined to succeed, Gregorian is bribed into undertaking a political career backed by a terrorist organisation. Australia is seen as a soft target for take-over by this organisastion. Initial acts of destabilisation occur in Sydney and Melbourne, leaving the authorities jittery. Finally, Parliament House is stormed; all Parliamentarians are taken hostage and imprisoned; they will be killed if any rescue is mounted. Gregorian becomes Prime Minister. The new government is able to control the south-east corner of the continent and becomes accepted through its nationalisation of the banks and the abolition of income tax. A rescue attempt led by John Sinclair fails and Sinclair's wife, formerly Gregorian's lover, is taken hostage. A second rescue attempt led by Sinclair is mounted under the direction of a foreign power but all the hostages are slaughtered.

Ascetics and mystics have played a prominent role in the development of nearly all religious traditions. The particular importance of such figures within Hinduism is especially evident in the traditions recounted of the Seven Rsis - the seven archetypal sages or seers who are depicted as being more important and powerful than even the gods themselves indeed, through their asceticism the Rsis become the progenitors of the gods, as also of men, demons and all other orders of creation. Traditions of the Seven Rsis is the first systematic study of these traditions and consists of two separate but closely related parts. The first part is a text-historical examination of how and when different traditions were formulated, while the second part explores the various activities and ideas associated with the Seven Rsis. Basing his study on the Sanskrit sources, but making use also of Tamil, tribal and non-Indian sources, Dr Mitchiner sets out the main traditions associated with the Seven Rsis and traces the underlying themes in those traditions, particularly that of the creative role of these ascetic figures. The work encompasses a wealth of original literary material, much of it previously un-translated and is both a sourcebook of the Rsi traditions and a study of the historical development, symbolic meaning and interconnectedness of those traditions, illustrating above all the dynamically creative role of the ascetic and mystic within Hinduism.

Rossell Hope Robbins collaborated with Carleton Brown in the publishing of the Index of Middle English Verse in 1943. With John L. Cutler, associate professor of English in the University of Kentucky, he has now compiled a supplement to the Index incorporating those texts published since 1943. At the same time, the two have completely revised the Index by including in the Supplement texts previously neglected. The number of entries has been increased to 6,000, and more than half of the 4,500 original entries have been revised. In addition to this basic revision, the appendices of the Index have been corrected and enlarged, especially the listing and locating of privately held manuscripts. Cross references have been inserted abundantly to facilitate easy use of the combined works. Additionally, reference has been made to related specialized studies. The large number of new entries is attributable not only to prolonged manuscript research but also to a broadening of the original criteria for the inclusion of poems. Rather than cutting off entries at 1500, which the authors felt impaired the usefulness of the original Index, Robbins and Cutler included genres that had not concluded but continued into the sixteenth century, as well as poems with uncertain dates they felt would be important for scholars. The Supplement overcomes these barriers by including the so-called Scottish Chaucerians, the late fifteenth and early sixteenth century manuscripts such as the "Tudor songbooks," verse items of only two lines, and tombstone and church bras epitaphs.
