How are the decisions made which produce the phenomenal arsenals of nuclear weapons in the world today? Who makes them? To whom are they answerable? What role does Parliament play? These questions have until now been shrouded in mystery. But until the answers to them are widely and openly known, those who are concerned about the build-up of nuclear arsenals cannot know how the process works, and to whom they should address themselves. That is why this book is a breakthrough. It explains, for the first time, how nuclear weapons decisions are made in each of the nuclear nations. The Oxford Research Group has brought together, entirely from non-classified sources, a mass of information to throw light on a hitherto invisible and unaccountable process.

A killer without remorse, burning with pride, and having the time of his life, Zachary Marshall is unstoppable-until Detective Jonas Peters unexpectedly arrives in the midst of one of Marshall's heinous crimes. After a bank robbery goes from bad to worse and leaves three dead-including a little girl-Marshall finds himself the target of the most intensive manhunt Riverside, California, has ever witnessed. Detective Peters becomes frustrated and half-crazed as the case falters due to lack of clues and evidence. Ordered to take a vacation from the department before he drives all the other detectives crazy with his constant tirades, he reluctantly agrees. But an innocent remark to the media changes the entire scenario-now the pursued has become the pursuer. Detective Peters takes this homicide case especially hard, having seen his own young daughter murdered during a bungled convenience-store robbery years earlier. The pain of the darkness is too deep, and the spirits are waiting to remind him; they will not forgive him, and he cannot forgive himself. There will be no rest until Marshall is caught.
Following the opening of The Met Breuer, this fascinating Bulletin contextualizes the architectural masterpiece now dedicated to displaying The Met’s collection of modern and contemporary art. Designed by one of the twentieth century’s most visionary architects, the Breuer building is a Brutalist icon and a work of art in its own right, known for its monumentality and stark purity of materials. Providing not just a history of the building commission, but also charting the artistic journey of Marcel Breuer from Bauhaus-educated furniture designer to world-renowned architect, this informative publication both records and contributes to the rich history surrounding Breuer and his landmark museum.
Successful privatization must be accompanied by the complete removal of privileges and any public policy mission. Bank behavior changes rapidly as profit maximation replaces the bureaucratic objective function. Once privileges are granted, they are difficult to remove. Therefore, privatization is a one-time (nonreversible) operation. The German mortgage bank, DePfa, went through a carefully planned and lengthy privatization process that was successful. Fannie Mae, the U.S. mortgage firm, became a privately owned institution endowed with special privileges, which led to a quasi-monopoly position. This resulted in suboptimal financial sector performance. Fannie Mae’s special privileges have proven resistant to reform efforts.

Quantum mechanics was still in its infancy in 1932 when the young John von Neumann, who would go on to become one of the greatest mathematicians of the twentieth century, published Mathematical Foundations of Quantum Mechanics--a revolutionary book that for the first time provided a rigorous mathematical framework for the new science. Robert Beyer's 1955 English translation, which von Neumann reviewed and approved, is cited more frequently today than ever before. But its many treasures and insights were too often obscured by the limitations of the way the text and equations were set on the page. In this new edition of this classic work, mathematical physicist Nicholas Wheeler has completely reset the book in TeX, making the text and equations far easier to read. He has also corrected a handful of typographic errors, revised some sentences for clarity and readability, provided an index for the first time, and added prefatory remarks drawn from the writings of Léon Van Hove and Freeman Dyson. The result brings new life to an essential work in theoretical physics and mathematics.
Increasingly, electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is recognized as a proven, effective, and even life-saving intervention in certain mood and thought disorders when other treatments have had little or no effect. Despite the proven efficacy and safety of this standard treatment in psychiatry, its availability is variable. Part of this disparity in access is related to misunderstanding by laypersons regarding the treatment and its potential adverse effects. Adequate education and training of psychiatrists and their support staff are essential to ensuring patients' access to this vital treatment tool. The authors of Clinical Manual of Electroconvulsive Therapy offer this expansive yet reader-friendly volume to help psychiatrists successfully incorporate ECT into their clinical practices. It is also a valuable resource for medical students and psychiatric residents, as well as experienced clinicians and researchers. The book updates the 1985 original and 1998 second edition of Electroconvulsive Therapy: A Programmed Text, and provides readers with a scheduled approach to understanding the fundamental concepts of ECT while offering practical guidance for establishing and maintaining an ECT program. Topics include the history of ECT, indications for use, patient referral and evaluation, the basics of ECT, clinical applications, anesthetics and other medications, seizure monitoring and management, ictal motor and cardiovascular response, adverse effects, and maintenance ECT. Included are detailed descriptions of recent advances including ultra-brief pulse ECT, oxygenation, muscle relaxation, and other modifications that have made this very effective treatment much safer and more acceptable to patients. Currently, it is estimated that more than 100,000 people receive ECT treatments each year in the U.S. Indications for use of ECT are for mood disorders such as major depressive disorder and mania, and thought disorders including schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder. Indications for use in other psychiatric disorders and general medical disorders such as Parkinson's disease, which appears to respond especially well to ECT, are reviewed as well. This highly-readable manual is a must-have for the library of any clinician interested in or currently practicing ECT: Provides background information on the origins of psychiatric treatments preceding ECT, including efforts using hydrotherapy and insulin comas Includes an algorithm for the management of ECT seizure adequacy Discusses contraindications as well as the potential adverse effects of ECT, including cognitive changes and cardiovascular complications Provides specific information about ECT device manufacturers, reprintable patient information sheets, and a written informed consent form This clinical manual comprehensively explores and explains the available knowledge regarding ECT -- based on extensive research over the past 70 years -- in order to help potential ECT clinicians make informed choices about the development and management of their ECT program.

Russia had learned the hard way the extremes these fanatics would go to. Ten years ago, Captain Yuri Shakirov stood in horror as young children were butchered by a group of Islamic extremists. Now America would encounter these same crazed murderers...
