The Tennessee 12th Cavalry Regiment [also called 1st Partisan Rangers] was organized behind Federal lines in February, 1863. The men were from the counties of Fayette, Tipton, Shelby, Haywood, and Gibson. It served R.V. Richardson's and Rucker's Brigade, confronted the Federals in Tennessee and Mississippi, and in October totaled about 300 effectives. Later it was active in Georgia, fought at Memphis, then was part of Hood's operations in Tennessee. During February, 1865, the regiment was broken up. In 1862, in one of the South's most amazing secret operations, a Confederate team, using newly invented explosive mines, blew up the USS Cairo, one of the Union's most feared ironclad gunboats. It sank within minutes. The USS Cairo is the only remaining vessel from the Union navy's river fleet. For 102 years, the ironclad rested deep in the mud of the Yazoo River. The systematic study of the Africana/Black experience emerged in universities in the USA in the late 1960s. As an outgrowth of the Civil Rights and Black Conscious movements, demonstrations occurred on campuses nationwide, giving birth to the new academic discipline. The characteristic voice quality of a speaker conveys to listeners a wealth of information about his physical, psychological and social attributes. For this reason, voice quality is of interest to a wide range of disciplines, including linguistics, phonetics and speech science, speech pathology, sociology, psychology, medicine, and communication engineering. Literature on voice quality is, consequently, scattered through a correspondingly wide range of publications. While this bibliography is unlikely to be exhaustive, it aims to be comprehensive. Exceptions to this are purely medical literature and literature on speech pathology; also, although a number of different languages are represented, works in English received the principal coverage.
The North Carolina 10th Artillery Battalion [also called 2nd Battalion Heavy Artillery] was organized during the spring of 1862 at Wilmington, North Carolina, with three companies, later increased to four. The unit served at Fort Caswell and Wilmington, then in December, 1864, was active in the defense of Savannah. Later it saw action in the North Carolina Campaign as infantry and surrendered with the Army of Tennessee. Major Wilton L. Young was in command.
