A study of the nineteenth-century magazine from the American South, its editor, and influence on the region. In the decades preceding the Civil War, the South struggled against widespread negative characterizations of its economy and society as it worked to match the North’s infrastructure and level of development. Recognizing the need for regional reform, James Dunwoody Brownson (J. D. B.) De Bow began to publish a monthly journal?De Bow’s Review?to guide Southerners toward a stronger, more diversified future. His periodical soon became a primary reference for planters and entrepreneurs in the Old South, promoting urban development and industrialization and advocating investment in schools, libraries, and other cultural resources. Later, however, De Bow began to use his journal to manipulate his readers’ political views. Through inflammatory articles, he defended proslavery ideology, encouraged Southern nationalism, and promoted anti-Union sentiment, eventually becoming one of the South’s most notorious fire-eaters. In De Bow’s Review: The Antebellum Vision of a New South, author John Kvach explores how the editor’s antebellum economic and social policies influenced Southern readers and created the framework for a postwar New South movement. By recreating subscription lists and examining the lives and livelihoods of 1,500 Review readers, Kvach demonstrates how De Bow’s Review influenced a generation and a half of Southerners. This approach allows modern readers to understand the historical context of De Bow’s editorial legacy. Ultimately, De Bow and his antebellum subscribers altered the future of their region by creating the vision of a New South long before the Civil War. “Kvach fills a surprising gap in the history of the nineteenth-century South with this elegantly written biography of the enigmatic J. D. B. De Bow. The work represents an important contribution to a growing historiography exploring the presence of a middle-class commercial culture in the pre–Civil War South and challenging long-held views of a static socioeconomic world of planters and plain folk.” —Bruce W. Eelman, author of Entrepreneurs in the Southern Upcountry: Commercial Culture in Spartanburg, South Carolina, 1845-1880 “An insightful, original, deeply researched work of scholarship. Examining not only the career of journalist J. D. B. De Bow but also the readers who responded enthusiastically to his call for economic diversification, John F. Kvach helps us see the nineteenth-century South in a new way, undistorted by the stark, artificial line so many historians have drawn to separate the so-called Old South from the New.” —Stephen V. Ash, author of A Massacre in Memphis: The Race Riot That Shook the Nation One Year after the Civil War “DeBow was the antebellum South’s most prominent advocate of economic modernization and industrialization, and one of its most vitriolic secessionists. John Kvach explores this seeming paradox, and gives us as well a careful description of DeBow’s subscribers and followers.” —J. Mills Thornton, University of Michigan

Brief Lives (1669-1697) is a collection of short biographical sketches on famous British figures by author, antiquarian, and archaeologist John Aubrey. The work is significant for its unique style, a blend of facts—names, dates, family, important works—and personal anecdotes for which Aubrey combined his skills for research and conversation to compile. Unpublished during his lifetime, the text was pieced together from extensive handwritten manuscripts by numerous editors and scholars, and over the centuries has become a beloved cultural artifact of early-modern Britain. A fascinating figure and gifted researcher in his own right, John Aubrey sought to capture the significance of his era and the people whose contributions to art, politics, science, and philosophy were not only changing Britain, but the world, forever. As a historical record, his Brief Lives provides valuable information on such figures as poet John Milton, playwright William Shakespeare, philosopher Thomas Hobbes, and chemist Robert Boyle. But as a work of art, the text humanizes them, reminding its readers that these were people whose desires, imperfections, and day-to-day lives were not unlike our own. We turn to his works to discover that Sir Walter Raleigh was a “poor” scholar “immerst...in fabrication of his owne fortunes,” or to read that Shakespeare, the son of a butcher who worked for his father as a youth, was known to “make a speech” while slaughtering a calf. At times straightforwardly factual, at others filled with gossip, Brief Lives is a document of its time that attempts to record a living history of knowledge and influence. Whether it succeeds is beside the point—that it speaks to us centuries on is the heart of the matter, the reason it must be read. A well-known man in his lifetime, Aubrey moved between cultural and political circles with ease, compiling the sources that would later become Brief Lives. Although a tireless writer and scholar, he published little during his life. His work, including Brief Lives, is thus the product of centuries of diligent research and editing from numerous scholars who understood, as the reader of this volume surely will, that Aubrey’s work deserved to reach the public. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of John Aubrey’s Brief Lives is a classic of British literature and biography reimagined for modern readers.
Most Americans are aware that the Wright brothers had been the first to fly a powered Flying Machine in 1903. But John J. Montgomery was the first to fly a glider of his own design in 1883, a full twenty years before the Wright brothers. Achieving Flight, by John G. Burdick and Bernard J. Burdick, provides an historic and scientific assessment of the role of John J. Montgomery (1858-1911), one of Californias own, in the early years of flight in America. It tells the story of Montgomery, an eminent scientist whose achievements in aeronautics and electricity have largely been forgotten. This biography narrates how, during his days as a student at St. Ignatius College, he was fortunate to be instructed by some of the most renowned Jesuit scientists ousted from Europe, earning a masters of science degree in 1880. The Burdicks also provide a critical analysis of Montgomerys prescient understanding of aeronautics relative to other practitioners and researchers prior to, during, and after his time. Noting Montgomerys importance in aeronautical history, Achieving Flight reviews his significant accomplishments in having his pilots fly successfully in high air (up to 4,000 feet, being lofted there by a hot-air balloon), but also evaluates the scientific correctness of his ideas, which were decades ahead of the times.

The South Carolina 23rd Infantry Regiment [also called Coast Rangers] was assembled at Charleston, South Carolina, in November, 1861. Most of the men were from Horry, Georgetown, Charleston, and Colleton counties. After being stationed in South Carolina, the regiment moved to Virginia and during the war served in General Evans', Elliot's, and Wallace's Brigade.
The Canadian Brothers or the Prophecy Fulfilled is a fictionalized narrative of events, people and places from the author's childhood and adolescence in Amherstburg, Upper Canada, that reflects foundation myths about Ontario and Canada and reveals their differences from those of the United States.
Based on nearly five decades of research, this magisterial work is a biographical register and analysis of the people who most directly influenced the course of the Civil War, its high commanders. Numbering 3,396, they include the presidents and their cabinet members, state governors, general officers of the Union and Confederate armies (regular, provisional, volunteers, and militia), and admirals and commodores of the two navies. Civil War High Commands will become a cornerstone reference work on these personalities and the meaning of their commands, and on the Civil War itself. Errors of fact and interpretation concerning the high commanders are legion in the Civil War literature, in reference works as well as in narrative accounts. The present work brings together for the first time in one volume the most reliable facts available, drawn from more than 1,000 sources and including the most recent research. The biographical entries include complete names, birthplaces, important relatives, education, vocations, publications, military grades, wartime assignments, wounds, captures, exchanges, paroles, honors, and place of death and interment. In addition to its main component, the biographies, the volume also includes a number of essays, tables, and synopses designed to clarify previously obscure matters such as the definition of grades and ranks; the difference between commissions in regular, provisional, volunteer, and militia services; the chronology of military laws and executive decisions before, during, and after the war; and the geographical breakdown of command structures. The book is illustrated with 84 new diagrams of all the insignias used throughout the war and with 129 portraits of the most important high commanders.

This is the first history of the Rockefeller Foundation's International Health Division (1913-1951), which was one of the most important public health agencies of the 20th century, a precursor of the World Health Organization. Based on extensive primary research, the book is enlivened with character sketches and descriptions of the conflicts among the "medical barons" who ran the division as they attempted to eradicate many serious diseases and to set up schools of public health and nursing around the world.
The founder of the technology incubator Startworks provides “a useful all-in-one blueprint to cover all aspects of putting together a successful company” (Young Upstarts). Are you wondering how to turn your great new business idea into a successful company? Here’s the roadmap. In Great from the Start, John Montgomery combines three decades of experience as one of America’s preeminent corporate lawyers with the wisdom of a wide range of startup industry veterans to offer the business secrets of Silicon Valley as an essential blueprint for any entrepreneur wishing to start a successful company. From raising venture capital to building a balanced team, from designing your culture to managing a board of directors, this book will help you experience the joy of building a successful company. Finally, if you are a leader who aspires to operate from the heart, believes in abundance and plays power with instead of power over, Great from the Start suggests how you can leverage neuroscience and the science of consciousness to inspire and lead your corporation so that it is optimized for the people that work there. “I have always struggled to communicate the multiple other relevant priorities, and the other intangibles required for a great execution. I found many of these in a new book, Great from the Start, by John B. Montgomery, which does a great job of laying out specifics, but also starts with a good summary of the intangibles, summarized as the five rules of relevancy.” —Martin Zwilling, Forbes “A high impact book.” —Raj Sisodia, coauthor, Firms of Endearment and Conscious Capitalism, and founder Conscious Capitalism Institute
Following the passage of the Confederate Ordinance of Secession in April 1861, pro-Union Virginians met in Wheeling and began the process that would lead to the formation of West Virginia as a separate state. Despite the new state's allegiance to the North, the population of West Virginia remained divided in its loyalties, as author John W. Shaffer has described in his other book, "Barbour County, A Clash of Loyalties: A Border County in the Civil War." In his latest effort, "Union and Confederate Soldiers and Sympathizers," Mr. Shaffer enumerates over 1,000 individuals who comprised the fractious community of Barbour County. Using official military records, the 1860 U.S. federal census, and a variety of other primary and secondary sources, the author lists 718 Union and 528 Confederate soldiers and sympathizers from Barbour County. These individuals are arranged by army and thereunder alphabetically. For each we learn the military unit (except for sympathizers), dates of service, duties, date of birth, names of parents, postwar occupation and other activities, and date of death. Mr. Shaffer's Introduction describes the background of the Civil War in Barbour County, while the Appendices specify the Union and Confederate units and military engagements in which Barbour citizens fought.
