At the University of Michigan, Jack met his wife, Nonnie, and the two of them became beloved Wolverine fans through good times and bad. This time was special as their relationship grew and the realities of World War II played a role in the decisions made. The book next takes the reader on a journey to Philadelphia where the author studied medicine at the Hahnemann Medical College and Hospital. This memoire provides an interesting look at the way things were in medical school in the mid 1940's. Augustana Hospital in Chicago was the site for his residency in family medicine and surgery. The stories abound of medicine, faith and family as he settled in Maquoketa, Iowa with his wife and eight children. Reflections of his life as an officer in the army, medical examiner and small town doc reveal a passion for medicine, the human story and a deep faith.

The emergence of biology as a distinct science in the eighteenth century has long been a subject of scholarly controversy. Michel Foucault, on the one hand, argued that its appearance only after 1800 represented a fundamental rupture with the natural history that preceded it, marking the beginnings of modernity. Ernst Mayr, on the other hand, insisted that even the word "biology" was unclear in its meaning as late as 1800, and that the field itself was essentially prospective well into the 1800s. In The Gestation of German Biology, historian of ideas John Zammito presents a different version of the emergence of the field, one that takes on both Foucault and Mayr and emphasizes the scientific progress throughout the eighteenth century that led to the recognition of the need for a special science. The embrace of the term biology around 1800, Zammito shows, was the culmination of a convergence between natural history and human physiology that led to the development of comparative physiology and morphology—the foundations of biology. Magisterial in scope, Zammito’s book offers nothing less than a revisionist history of the field, with which anyone interested in the origins of biology will have to contend.

How do we make sense of these contradictions? In White Race Discourse: Preserving Racial Privilege in a Post-Racial Society, John D. Foster examines the numerous contradictions sixty-one white college students exhibit as they discuss a variety of race matters. Foster demonstrates that the whites interviewed possess a sophisticated method of communication to come across as ambivalent, tolerant, and innocent, while simultaneously expressing their intolerance, fear, and suspicion of nonwhite Americans. Whether intended or not, this ambivalence assists in efforts to preserve social inequities while failing to address racial injustices. While many scholars have written about the “racetalk” of whites, few have succeeded in bridging both the theoretical and methodological gaps between whiteness scholars and discourse analysts. White Race Discourse presents evidence that these white Americans are “bureaucrats of whiteness” in that they defend the racial status quo through their discourse.
