Among the laws agreed upon in England for the governing of the Province of Pennsylvania was one providing for a registry of marriages, births, and deaths. Marriage licenses were issued from the Office of the Provincial Secretary, those listed in this work dating from 1742. Some earlier registers of licenses and some kept at a later date are missing, yet this work still features a base list of 6,500 marriages, to which we have added a further 3,500 marriages from articles in the Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography and The Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine. All 10,000 marriages are based on public records as opposed to church records.
This book is an adventure into the computer analysis of three dimensional composite structures using the finite element method (FEM). It is designed for Universities, for advanced undergraduates, for graduates, for researchers, and for practising engineers in industry. The text advances gradually from the analysis of simple beams to arbitrary anisotropic and composite plates and shells; it treats both linear and nonlinear behavior. Once the basic philosophy of the method is understood, the reader may expand its application and modify the computer programs to suit particular needs. The book arose from four years research at the University of Stuttgart, Germany. We present the theory and computer programs concisely and systematically so that they can be used both for teaching and applications. We have tried to make the book simple and clear, and to show the underlying physical and mathematical ideas. The FEM has been in existence for more than 50 years. One of the authors, John Argyris, invented this technique in World War II in the course of the check on the analysis of the swept back wing of the twin engined Meteor Jet Fighter. In this work, he also consistently applied matrix calculus and introduced triangular membrane elements in conjunction with two new definitions of triangular stresses and strains which are now known as the component and total measures. In fact, he was responsible for the original formulation of the matrix force and displacement methods, the forerunners of the FEM.

When record men first traveled from Chicago or invited musicians to studios in New York, these entrepreneurs had no conception how their technology would change the dynamics of what constituted a musical performance. 78 Blues: Folksongs and Phonographs in the American South covers a revolution in artist performance and audience perception through close examination of hundreds of key “hillbilly” and “race” records released between the 1920s and World War II. In the postwar period, regional strains recorded on pioneering 78 r.p.m. discs exploded into urban blues and R&B, honky-tonk and western swing, gospel, soul, and rock 'n' roll. These old-time records preserve the work of some of America's greatest musical geniuses such as Jimmie Rodgers, Robert Johnson, Charlie Poole, and Blind Lemon Jefferson. They are also crucial mile markers in the course of American popular music and the growth of the modern recording industry. When these records first circulated, the very notion of recorded music was still a novelty. All music had been created live and tied to particular, intimate occasions. How were listeners to understand an impersonal technology like the phonograph record as a musical event? How could they reconcile firsthand interactions and traditional customs with technological innovations and mass media? The records themselves, several hundred of which are explored fully in this book, offer answers in scores of spoken commentaries and skits, in song lyrics and monologues, or other more subtle means.
Though we have other distinguishing characteristics (walking on two legs, for instance, and relative hairlessness), the brain and the behavior it produces are what truly set us apart from the other apes and primates. And how this three-pound organ composed of water, fat, and protein turned a mammal species into the dominant animal on earth today is the story John S. Allen seeks to tell. Adopting what he calls a “bottom-up” approach to the evolution of human behavior, Allen considers the brain as a biological organ; a collection of genes, cells, and tissues that grows, eats, and ages, and is subject to the direct effects of natural selection and the phylogenetic constraints of its ancestry.
