In The Click Moment, Frans Johansson, author of The Medici Effect, shows how to stay ahead when you can't predict the future Success is random. But we can capture this randomness and turn it in our favour. According to bestselling author Frans Johansson, planning and careful analysis no longer guarantee success. But dig deep into the actions of successful people and organizations and you find one common theme. A turning point occurs and they take advantage of that 'click moment' to change their fate. Diane von Furstenberg saw a matching skirt and top on TV and the wrap-dress was born. Microsoft Windows was on the brink of being shut down until two people met at a party. Starbucks sold brewing equipment until Howard Schultz experienced his first latte. These people capitalized on their luck and altered the course of their lives. The Click Moment shows how we can follow them by opening ourselves up to chance encounters and harnessing the forces of success that follow.

Sverker Johansson has written an unusual book on language origins, with its emphasis on empirical evidence rather than theory-building. This is a book for the student or researcher who prefers solid data and well-supported conclusions, over speculative scenarios. Much that has been written on the origins of language is characterized by hypothesizing largely unconstrained by evidence. But empirical data do exist, and the purpose of this book is to integrate and review the available evidence from all relevant disciplines, not only linguistics but also, e.g., neurology, primatology, paleoanthropology, and evolutionary biology. The evidence is then used to constrain the multitude of scenarios for language origins, demonstrating that many popular hypotheses are untenable. Among the issues covered: (1) Human evolutionary history, (2) Anatomical prerequisites for language, (3) Animal communication and ape "language", (4) Mind and language, (5) The role of gesture, (6) Innateness, (7) Selective advantage of language, (8) Proto-language.

An innovative investigation of the inner workings of Spotify that traces the transformation of audio files into streamed experience. Spotify provides a streaming service that has been welcomed as disrupting the world of music. Yet such disruption always comes at a price. Spotify Teardown contests the tired claim that digital culture thrives on disruption. Borrowing the notion of “teardown” from reverse-engineering processes, in this book a team of five researchers have playfully disassembled Spotify's product and the way it is commonly understood. Spotify has been hailed as the solution to illicit downloading, but it began as a partly illicit enterprise that grew out of the Swedish file-sharing community. Spotify was originally praised as an innovative digital platform but increasingly resembles a media company in need of regulation, raising questions about the ways in which such cultural content as songs, books, and films are now typically made available online. Spotify Teardown combines interviews, participant observations, and other analyses of Spotify's “front end” with experimental, covert investigations of its “back end.” The authors engaged in a series of interventions, which include establishing a record label for research purposes, intercepting network traffic with packet sniffers, and web-scraping corporate materials. The authors' innovative digital methods earned them a stern letter from Spotify accusing them of violating its terms of use; the company later threatened their research funding. Thus, the book itself became an intervention into the ethics and legal frameworks of corporate behavior.
A paradigm-shifting, integrative approach to understanding body movement. The ability to move with efficiency and agility has been an essential component to our evolution and survival as a species. It has enabled us to find food, fight threats, flee danger, and flourish both individually and collectively. Our body's intricate network of bones, muscles, tissues, and organs moves with great complexity. While traditional anatomy has relied on a reductionist frame for understanding these mechanisms in isolation, the contributors to Movement Integration take a more systemic, integrative approach. Ensomatosy is a new paradigm for comprehending movement from the perspective of the body's entirety. The body's many systems are understood as synchronized both internally and externally. Drawing on expertise in physiotherapy, somatics, sports science, Rolfing, myofascial therapy, craniosacral therapy, Pilates, and yoga, the authors assert that a more comprehensive understanding of movement is key to restoring the body's natural ability to move fluidly and painlessly. With over 150 images, the Color Illustration Model of Relative Movement provides a visual tool for understanding how joints interact with surrounding structures (rather than in isolation). This is an ideal book for physiotherapists, massage therapists, structural integrators, coaches, as well as yoga and Pilates instructors.
Erik Johansson’s images are created with a camera and refined into absurdity in the computer. With mathematical preciseness Erik Johansson’s photographs depict attractive, compelling landscapes where perspectives are always misleading. His artistry is evident in the sheer realism, no matter how absurd. He captures ideas by combining images in new ways to create what looks like a real photograph, yet with logical inconsistencies to impart an effect of surrealism. Some finished images are the combination of ‘hundreds of original photographs’ as well as raw materials, and Johansson spends dozens of hours using image manipulation software such as Photoshop to alter the image digitally and to illustrate his idea.

This textbook introduces the reader to basic problems in thephilosophy of science and ethics, primarily using examples frommedicine. It is based on the conviction that philosophy, medicalscience, medical informatics, and medical ethics are overlappingdisciplines. It claims that the philosophical lessons of the twentiethcentury are not that nature is a social construction and thatanything goes with respect to methodological and moral rules.Instead, there is scientific knowledge, but it is never completelysecure; there are norms, but they are situation-bound; and therefore,it makes good sense to search for scientific truths and try toact in a morally decent way. Using philosophical catchwords, theauthors advocate fallibilism and particularism; a combinationthat might be called pragmatic realism.
Presenting a realistic interpretation of quantum mechanics and, in particular, a realistic view of quantum waves, this book defends, with one exception, Schrodinger's views on quantum mechanics. Johansson goes on to defend the view that the collapse of a wave function during a measurement is a real physical collapse of a wave and argues that the collapse is a consequence of quantisation of interaction. Lastly Johansson argues for a revised principle of individuation in the quantum domain and that this principle enables a sort of explanation of non-local phenomena.

This book discusses and analyses the ways in which fatherhood is in transition in contemporary and globalized society. The authors identify and examine fathering practices in relation to hegemonic and marginal patterns of masculinity, the concept of heteronormativity and sexuality, and patterns of segregation, class and national differences. Contextualised in relation to theories of fatherhood and relevant statistics, Fatherhood in Transition presents rich empirical material gathered in a number of western countries. It focuses on key themes including transnational fathering and families, gay fathers and the virtual global arena of fatherhood images found on the internet. Containing a number of new discussions about masculinity and fatherhood, whilst contributing to and developing existing debates and theories about men, masculinity, gender and society, this book will be of interest to students and scholars across a range of disciplines, including Men’s Studies, Gender Studies, Sociology, Psychology, Media Studies and Cultural Studies.

Why do so many world-changing insights come from people with little or no related experience? Charles Darwin was a geologist when he proposed the theory of evolution. And it was an astronomer who finally explained what happened to the dinosaurs. Frans Johansson's The Medici Effect shows how breakthrough ideas most often occur when we bring concepts from one field into a new, unfamiliar territory and offers examples of how we can turn the ideas we discover into path-breaking innovations. Clayton M. Christensen, bestselling author of The Innovator's Dilemma, has described The Medici Effect as "one of the most insightful books about managing innovation I have ever read. Its assertion that breakthrough principles of creativity occur at novel intersections is an enduring principle of creativity that should guide innovators in every field." Now with a new preface and a discussion guide, and a foreword by Harvard Business School professor Teresa Amabile, The Medici Effect is a timeless classic that will help you reach your innovative peak.

The completely redesigned Grammar of Spoken and Written English is a comprehensive corpus-based reference grammar. GSWE describes the structural characteristics of grammatical constructions in English, as do other reference grammars. But GSWE is unique in that it gives equal attention to describing the patterns of language use for each grammatical feature, based on empirical analyses of grammatical patterns in a 40-million-word corpus of spoken and written registers. Grammar-in-use is characterized by three inter-related kinds of information: frequency of grammatical features in spoken and written registers, frequencies of the most common lexico-grammatical patterns, and analysis of the discourse factors influencing choices among related grammatical features. GSWE includes over 350 tables and figures highlighting the results of corpus-based investigations. Throughout the book, authentic examples illustrate all research findings. The empirical descriptions document the lexico-grammatical features that are especially common in face-to-face-conversation compared to those that are especially common in academic writing. Analyses of fiction and newspaper articles are included as further benchmarks of language use. GSWE contains over 6,000 authentic examples from these four registers, illustrating the range of lexico-grammatical features in real-world speech and writing. In addition, comparisons between British and American English reveal specific regional differences. Now completely redesigned and available in an electronic edition, the Grammar of Spoken and Written English remains a unique and indispensable reference work for researchers, language teachers, and students alike.

Johansson’s Global Marketing, 4/e utilizes a three-pronged framework to organize the discussion of how to conduct global business: Foreign Entry, Local Marketing, and Global Management. Johansson seeks to develop the varied skills a marketing manager needs to be successful in each of these tasks. The discussion progresses from how to market an existing product outside of the domestic market to how to develop a new product for specific local markets and then broadens the scope to discuss marketing and management topics from a global managerial perspective. Legal, regulatory, political, and cultural, issues are discussed as appropriate throughout the text. Excellent examples and cases, many of which are drawn from the author’s rich international experience, help students move from concept to application. Most International Marketing books have 6-7 separate chapters up front that discuss the legal and regulatory, political, and cultural environments before they begin to discuss global market entry. Johansson presumes that the students have a basic appreciation of these environments and begins the market entry discussion after 3 introductory chapters. The orientation of this text is more managerial and less descriptive. This text is used both as the first course in the undergraduate level and in MBA level courses.
