Across Europe, there is an intense search for new and sustainable approaches to providing welfare. Demographic change, new social risks and other factors call for new ideas to maintain and enhance the performance and quality of social services and to enable the participation of all citizens in an inclusive society. Against this background, and based on the findings of the EU research platform INNOSERV and empirically obtained research results from text and video material, this book provides insights into current approaches and practices to improve and transform social services.
Young Refugees and Forced Displacement is about young Syrian and Iraqi refugees navigating the complex realities of forced displacement in Beirut. It is based on a British Academy funded two-year project with 51 displaced youths aged 8 to 17 and under the care of three local humanitarian organisations. Focus groups, interviews and innovative arts-based methods were used to learn about their everyday lives. At the end of the project, we coproduced with them a public mural, allowing unexpected epistemological and methodological reflections on researching refugees and the "right to opacity." Families and friendships, humanitarian caregiving, racism, discrimination and everyday decencies and civilities make up the stuff of their ordinary, everyday encounters within refugeedom, defining both its sharper edges and its more inadvertent and quietly political ones. Thus, refugeedom, as we conceive it, includes "the humanitarian condition" but goes a little beyond it, to become also a human condition of political alterity. In navigating refugeedom, the young Syrians and Iraqis become sophisticated political and moral actors, using emotional reflexivity as they engage layered subjectivities to define the terms of their own forced displacement. This book will be of interest to policymakers, humanitarian organisations, social science scholars and students working on refugees, displacement, humanitarianism, intimacies and emotions, racism and discrimination. It may also be of interest to displaced youth.
The question of the sustainability of different European welfare states is currently in discussion. There is a strong need for new innovative ideas that can preserve or even increase the capability of social services. Considering this, one of the core goals is an inclusive society, which gives every person the same chance to participate. So how do social innovations look like in practice? What are the most important drivers for innovations and to what extent do framework conditions matter? This book presents empirical research results from all over Europe based on text and video material and answers the question of innovations in social services.
SNYNOPSIS Many people may not understand the reasoning of this documentary, and why I am rehashing the expulsions, the after-war tragedies that confronted a defeated nation, the hundreds of internment camps occupied by Germans and German-Americans, the treatment of German Prisoners-of-war upon the conclusion of hostilities, the enforcement of the Morgenthau Plan, and the BenÉs decrees regarding the mass murders of over two million Sudetenlanders, Prussians and other Eastern European Germans. I thought about this and decided that when certain people, whether they be American, British, Russian, French and others, stop their crucifying those of German extraction, then and only then, would it not be necessary to publish this book. The word "Nazi" is archaic, and does not apply to more than ninety percent of all Germans. Most Germans knew nothing about the Holocaust, except what was recently explained to them. They knew nothing about the internment camps where Germans and German-Americans were interned during the war; were unaware of the expulsions of millions of ethnic Germans from their historical homelands; the torture, rape and murder of millions of innocent non-combatant women and children after hostilities had ended; and the deliberate starvation to death of more than one million eight hundred thousand German P.O.W.'s after the war, in complete disregard to the Hague, Geneva and other conventions. This documentary is not singling out others that may or may not be guilty of these atrocities. It is only the truth that we seek to be put into the history books and other texts; not the made-up revisions of Arrogant Revisionists. Much of the information published herewith is not even known by most Germans or people of other ethnic entities. This documentary therefore is one of clarity, reality and truth. It needs to be known! Everyone, Germans and non-Germans alike should read this book, so at least they will know the other side of the story.
Comet nuclei are the most primitive bodies in the solar system. They have been created far away from the early Sun and their material properties have been altered the least since their formation. Thus, the composition and structure of comet nuclei provide the best information about the chemical and thermodynamic conditions in the nebula from which our solar system formed. The long felt absence of a trustworthy critical edition of Philostratus’ Life of Apollonius of Tyana has been remedied by the publication of the new Teubner edition of this text, published in 2022. In the preface to the edition the publication of a companion volume was announced. This book fulfils this promise. After an introduction dealing with the transmission of the text and with Philostratus’ Greek there follows an extensive series of critical notes in which a large number of editorial choices are explained. In these notes much attention is paid both to the morphological and syntactic peculiarities of Greek of the Imperial period in general and to the idiosyncratic syntax employed by Philostratus in particular. The notes deal with every aspect of the text, ranging from the use of particles and word order to moods and tenses, and containing ample discussions of conjectures and interpretations of earlier scholars. This book deals with algorithms for the solution of linear systems of algebraic equations with large-scale sparse matrices, with a focus on problems that are obtained after discretization of partial differential equations using finite element methods. The authors provide a systematic presentation of the recent advances in robust algebraic multilevel methods and algorithms, e.g., the preconditioned conjugate gradient method, algebraic multilevel iteration (AMLI) preconditioners, the classical algebraic multigrid (AMG) method and its recent modifications, namely AMG using element interpolation (AMGe) and AMG based on smoothed aggregation.
