Harmonically modulated luminescence combines the advantages of highly sensitive luminescence metrology with an immediate dynamic access to carrier lifetime in semiconductors at a minimum of required a priori information. The present work covers theoretical, conceptual, and experimental advances of the harmonically modulated luminescence technique. Theoretical constraints of dynamic carrier lifetime techniques are rigorously elaborated, including the proof of their differential nature and their characteristics at nonuniform spatial distributions of recombination rate. The pathway toward a unified, reliable, and versatile harmonically modulated carrier lifetime metrology is delineated - covering the entire solar cell production chain from bare ingots to finished solar cells. Accurate access to miscellaneous relevant recombination and transport properties via harmonically modulated luminescence is demonstrated and experimentally validated, embracing injection-dependent carrier lifetimes at extremely low injection conditions, a spatially resolved carrier lifetime calibration of luminescence images, and accurate approaches to both net dopant concentration and minority carrier mobility.

Durch die Verknüpfung von Paneldaten mit Registerdaten auf der individuellen Ebene werden in dieser Arbeit Messfehler für den Bezug von Arbeitslosengeld II für fünf aufeinanderfolgende Panelwellen untersucht. Dabei zeigt sich, dass die Messfehler für den Bezug nicht zufällig verteilt sind, sondern mit der Zeit und persönlichen Charakteristiken korrelieren.

In today's industrialized world, almost everything we do consumes energy. While industrialized countries enjoy all the amenities of modern energy, more than a billion people in the developing world still lack energy access. Why is energy poverty persistent in some countries and not in others? Offering the first comprehensive political science account of energy poverty, Escaping the Energy Poverty Trap explores why governments have or have not been able to lead in providing modern energy to their least advantaged citizens. Focusing on access to modern cooking fuels and household electrification, the authors develop a new political-economic theory that introduces government interest, institutional capacity, and local accountability as key determinants of energy access. They draw on case studies from India, East Asia, Africa, and Latin America to offer the optimistic conclusion that governments can improve institutional capacity and local accountability through appropriate policy design. Energy poverty is a policy problem, the authors assert, and engaging with it as such offers new opportunities not only for ensuring equal energy access, but also for political, economic, and environmental development.

Conversational Agents (CAs) are changing the way people interact in their daily lives. Specifically, CAs such as chatbots or voice assistants are increasingly covering services traditionally provided by human employees. CA-based services are available at any time and in any capacity, providing convenience and comfort while overcoming the limitations of human employees. However, many CAs are imperfect and prone to errors, such as frequently misinterpreting users’ requests, which leads to a mismatch between the expectations of the service and the service provided. As a result, some CA-based services have been discontinued in the past. In this context, a human-like design of CAs potentially offers a valuable approach to enhancing the user’s perception of a service. Prior research shows that this leads to individuals interacting with a human-like CA as if they would interact with a real individual. Furthermore, human-like errors could be considered a social cue, since it is human nature to make errors. To address the overall research area of CAs imperfections, four studies were conducted and synthesized in this dissertation. The studies provide novel insights into the design of human-like text-based CAs interrelated with the occurrence of CA imperfections, including human-like errors. Through a set of experiments, four major contributions are provided. First, the human-like design of imperfect CAs can mitigate the negative individuals’ perceptions, if implemented carefully. Second, the human-like design of imperfect CAs can shift individuals into a positive emotional state which increases service satisfaction. Third, human-like errors are not perceived as human-like and should not be employed in CA-based service encounters at present. Fourth, not every CA-based service requires a high level of human-like design, as the expectations of a CA-based service may be as different as the expectations of traditional human-based services.
