Lignans, by convention, are a group of natural products that are formed by linking two phenylpropanoid units (C C units) by oxidative coupling. Most importantly, in 6 3 a lignan, two (C C units) are bound through the central carbon of their side chains, 6 3 0 i. e. the 8 and 8 positions (1, 2). The occurrence of C C -dimers, linked at sites other 6 3 0 than the 8–8 positions, is also known and these compounds have been termed neolignans (3, 4). As these two groups of compounds have close structural as well as biosynthetic relationships, they are often associated together and incorporated under the general term “lignan” (5). The diverse structural categorization of true lignans and of a few neolignans is presented in Fig. 1. Through the years, several review articles or books covering different facets of lignans, including their ch- istry (6, 7), biogenesis (8), synthesis (9), and biological activities (10) have been published. Enduring research for the investigation of secondary metabolites of plants has evidenced some compounds that are biogenetically related to true lignans or neolignans but bear some features not discerned in conventional lignans. These compounds or groups of compounds have been termed as “non-conventional lignans”, and include coumarinolignans, ?avonolignans, and stilbenolignans. The non-conventional lignans, like the conventional ones, have two C C units linked 6 3 together but have additional structural features to place them also under the category of coumarins, ?avonoids, or stilbenes.
Conversational Agents (CAs) are changing the way people interact in their daily lives. Specifically, CAs such as chatbots or voice assistants are increasingly covering services traditionally provided by human employees. CA-based services are available at any time and in any capacity, providing convenience and comfort while overcoming the limitations of human employees. However, many CAs are imperfect and prone to errors, such as frequently misinterpreting users’ requests, which leads to a mismatch between the expectations of the service and the service provided. As a result, some CA-based services have been discontinued in the past. In this context, a human-like design of CAs potentially offers a valuable approach to enhancing the user’s perception of a service. Prior research shows that this leads to individuals interacting with a human-like CA as if they would interact with a real individual. Furthermore, human-like errors could be considered a social cue, since it is human nature to make errors. To address the overall research area of CAs imperfections, four studies were conducted and synthesized in this dissertation. The studies provide novel insights into the design of human-like text-based CAs interrelated with the occurrence of CA imperfections, including human-like errors. Through a set of experiments, four major contributions are provided. First, the human-like design of imperfect CAs can mitigate the negative individuals’ perceptions, if implemented carefully. Second, the human-like design of imperfect CAs can shift individuals into a positive emotional state which increases service satisfaction. Third, human-like errors are not perceived as human-like and should not be employed in CA-based service encounters at present. Fourth, not every CA-based service requires a high level of human-like design, as the expectations of a CA-based service may be as different as the expectations of traditional human-based services.
Information Combining is an introduction to the principles of information combining. The concept is described, the bounds for repetition codes and for single parity-check codes are proved, and some applications are provided. As the focus is on the basic principles, it considers a binary symmetric source, binary linear channel codes, and binary-input symmetric memoryless channels. Information Combining first introduces the concept of mutual information profiles and revisits the well-known Jensen's inequality. Using these tools, the bounds on information combining are derived for single parity-check codes and for repetition codes. The application of the bounds is illustrated in four examples. Information Combining provides an excellent tutorial on this important subject for students, researchers and rpofessonals working in communications and information theory.
This first, systematic survey of the Tibetan non-canonical literature dealing with Sanskrit grammar, partly consists of translations of Indic works, such as revisions of canonical versions, and translations of works not contained in the canon, and partly of original Tibetan works. In the first chapter of the book a detailed description of these textual materials is presented - sixty-one titles in total - which were produced during all periods of Tibetan literary history, from the ninth to the twentieth centuries. The second chapter discusses one specific effect of the impetus of Indic traditional grammar within Tibetan scholastics, namely the influence of Indic models of linguistic description on Tibetan indigenous grammar. This particular assimilation of an Indic technical discipline into Tibetan scholarship is examined in detail, and it is shown that other segments of Indic Buddhism were sources of inspiration and derivation for the Tibetan grammarians as well.

Civil wars are among the most difficult problems in world politics. While mediation, intervention, and peacekeeping have produced some positive results in helping to end civil wars, they fall short in preventing them in the first place. In Incentivizing Peace, Jaroslav Tir and Johannes Karreth show that considering civil wars from a developmental perspective presents opportunities to prevent the escalation of nascent armed conflicts into full-scale civil wars. The authors demonstrate that highly-structured intergovernmental organizations (IGOs such as the World Bank, IMF, or regional development banks) are particularly well-positioned to engage in civil war prevention. When such IGOs have been actively engaged in nations on the edge, their potent economic tools have helped to steer rebel-government interactions away from escalation and toward peaceful settlement. Incentivizing Peace provides enlightening case evidence that IGO participation is a key to better predicting, and thus preventing, the outbreak of civil war.
Johannes Ph. Backhaus applies the Model of Education Reconstruction (MER) to the context of a social accountability intervention in Cambodia. This book is not an evaluation but adopts a qualitative perspective on the learning approach applied by the researched intervention. The research found that the learning intervention does not systematically include learners’ pre-existing social knowledge. It would potentially benefit from systematically harvesting and reinforcing pre-held convictions to sustainably motivate participation. It does not address potentially sensitive topics while interviewees show a sophisticated and holistic understanding of these. Finally, there are inconsistencies between the program’s aims and objectives. In sum, the piloted approach offers pathways on how to beneficially include qualitative perspectives on similar development interventions.

International courts and tribunals are increasingly asked to pass judgment on matters that are traditionally considered to fall within the domestic jurisdiction of States. Especially in the fields of human rights, investment, and trade law, international adjudicators commonly evaluate decisions of national authorities that have been made in the course of democratic procedures and public deliberation. A controversial question is whether international adjudicators should review such decisions de novo or show deference to domestic authorities. This book investigates how various international courts and tribunals have responded to this question. In addition to a comparative analysis, the book provides a normative argument, discussing whether different forms of deference are justified in international adjudication. It proposes a distinction between epistemic deference, which is based on the superior capacity of domestic authorities to make factual and technical assessments, and constitutional deference, which is based on the democratic legitimacy of domestic decision-making. The book concludes that epistemic deference is a prudent acknowledgement of the limited expertise of international adjudicators, whereas the case for constitutional deference depends on the relative power of the reviewing court vis-à-vis the domestic legal order.
