Political realism in post-World War II America has not been about power alone, but about reconciling power with moral and ethical considerations. The caricature of realism as an expression of amoral realpolitik has been inadequate and false, for realism in the nuclear age has pivoted as much on moral principles as on power politics. Joel H. Rosenthal’s survey of five noteworthy self-proclaimed political realists explores the realists’ overarching commitment to transforming traditional power politics into a form of “responsible power” commensurate with American values. Hans Morgenthau, George Kennan, Reinhold Niebuhr, Walter Lippman, and Dean Acheson—the most important and prolific of the American realists—all fought the excesses of crusading moralism while simultaneously promoting a concept of power politics that retained a moral component at its core. This is the story of how architects of containment, present at the creation of the new bipolar world shaped by the threat of “mutual assured destruction,” became ardent critics of that world. It describes realism as a product of a particular time and place—a set of values, assumptions, processes of moral reasoning, and views about America’s role in the world. Rosenthal maintains that the postwar American realists may be best understood as products of the historical and cultural context from which they emerged. Their attempts to articulate a “public philosophy” and integrate values into decision making in international affairs reflected their views on both the way the world “is” and the way the world “ought to be.” This study explains realism as an effort to articulate a prescriptive framework for working toward the ideal while living in the real. In doing so, it reveals the realists’ insistence on evaluating competing claims and on accepting paradox as an inevitable component of moral choice.

One-on-One Tutoring by Humans and Computers articulates the CIRCSIM-Tutor project, an attempt to develop a computer tutor that generates a natural language dialogue with a student. Editors Martha Evens and Joel Michael present the educational context within which the project was launched, as well as research into tutoring, the process of implementation of CIRCSIM-Tutor, and the results of using CIRCSIM-Tutor in the classroom. The domain of this project is cardiovascular physiology, specifically targeting first-year medical students, though the idea is applicable to the development of intelligent tutoring systems across populations, disciplines, and domains. This 5 year-long project was motivated by the belief that students need assistance in building appropriate mental models of complex physiological phenomena, as well as practice in expressing these ideas in their own words to fully develop those models, and experience in problem-solving to use those models effectively. Compliant Offshore Structures deals with some aspects of the mechanics of compliant offshore structures. Analysis methods for determining the hydrostatic and hydrodynamic behavior, at wave frequencies only, of conventional and novel compliant structure types are described. The contribution of hull configuration for tandem hull vessels and of pneumatic compliances for ship shape and semi-submersible vessels is also emphasized. Comprised of 11 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the various conventional and emerging methods of hydrostatic and hydrodynamic analysis that are available for characterizing compliant marine structures. The response of compliant structures to ocean waves is given emphasis, along with the hydrostatic stability of a compliant vessel. The discussion then turns to the use of analysis methods for a variety of conventional and novel compliant structures such as semi-submersibles, ship forms, tensioned buoyant platforms, crane vessels, and vertical marine risers. However, those compliant structures that are believed to have a future application or, alternatively, are useful in illustrating an interesting performance feature are also considered. Among such structures are those with articulated joints, pneumatic compliances, and tandem hull marine vehicles. This monograph is intended for practicing engineers as well as undergraduate and postgraduate students.
