The setting for my novel, The Spook, is Nebraska Territory in MarchMay 1861, centered on Fort Laramie. The central character, J. D. Davis, is a guard for an inspector from the general land office who is investigating a fraudulent eighteen-township survey in the vicinity of the Niobrara River. A romance with and marriage to a widow with three children is weaved in the story. The inspector determines the fraud and undertakes to perform the contract and pursue the guilty party. The guilty fight back, attempting murder to stop the report. Davis kills the assassin among the defrauders, known as the Spook, and takes his horse. Davis possesses both a Spencer repeating rifle and a Whitworth sharpshooting rifle through the effort of his wealthy father. A dead shot from an early age with muzzle loaders, Davis has the first repeating rifle seen by the Brule Sioux Indians who are a threat to the surveying. A survivor of the destroyed defrauders sets the Brule Sioux Indians on the surveyors by shooting into the Brule village from a horse that is identified as the Spook horse. The Brule are divided partly because the Spook horse is seen in different places at the same times. A battle takes place in which Davis destroys an entire Brule force and has the army bury all the bodies in a mysterious place and way. The Sioux elders eventually confront Davis with their demand for the bodies, and an interesting finish to the novel takes place.

Hasta el día de hoy, no estoy seguro si era para que se fueran y no nos picaran, o si era para que se quedaran y tener un acceso fácil a la miel, aunque yo creo que la razón del ruido era lo de la miel. Así de inadecuados éramos los citadinos en el rancho, en un mundo completamente diferente, en ocasiones hasta podríamos parecer un poco patéticos, pero lo que pasaba era simplemente que estamos en un elemento diferente, frio y más duro, pero aun así, maravilloso y encantador, para nosotros todo era novedad y diversión. Ahora el rancho está muy cambiado, ya hay luz eléctrica, agua potable y muchas comodidades que no existieron en ese tiempo, lo que lo hacia el lugar ideal para pasar las vacaciones. Yo en lo particular prefi ero recordarlo así como antes era, el rancho de mi tía Cecilia.

In France, Belgium, and other Francophone countries, comic strips—called bande dessinee or “BD” in French—have long been considered a major art form capable of addressing a host of contemporary issues. Among French-speaking intelligentsia, graphic narratives were deemed worthy of canonization and critical study decades before the academy and the press in the United States embraced comics. The place that BD holds today, however, belies the contentious political route the art form has traveled. In Drawing France: French Comics and the Republic, author Joel E. Vessels examines the trek of BD from it being considered a fomenter of rebellion, to a medium suitable only for semi-literates, to an impediment to education, and most recently to an art capable of addressing social concerns in mainstream culture. In the mid-1800s, alarmists feared political caricatures might incite the ire of an illiterate working class. To counter this notion, proponents yoked the art to a particular articulation of “Frenchness” based on literacy and reason. With the post-World War II economic upswing, French consumers saw BD as a way to navigate the changes brought by modernization. After bande dessinee came to be understood as a compass for the masses, the government, especially Francois Mitterand’s administration, brought comics increasingly into “official” culture. Vessels argues that BD are central to the formation of France’s self-image and a self-awareness of what it means to be French.

Anyway, thus saith a poet/punster/poopoo-er who keeps starting over, which is the nature of writing poetry. The only art you can't do fast if you have to is poetry. It's God making us compulsive rhymers. Because God loves everyone. (We have to love the very same bastards.) Humans, however, have all the easy chores: poverty, crime, disease. God has the hard one: how to bring all people to get along together. Poetry is not the same as lyrics. Poetry is simple self-love; lyrics, the poet wanting others to love, where words are made to sing without music. But submitting poetry is also the storm warning before rejection. Although just because one never finishes anything doesn't mean he shouldn't be starting things. After all, what's the verb for what you do?

Indonesia's policy since independence has been to foster the national language. In some regions, local languages are still political rallying points, but their significance has diminished, and the rapid spread of Indonesian as the national language of political and religious authority has been described as the 'miracle of the developing world'. Among the Weyewa, on the island of Sumba, this shift has displaced a once vibrant tradition of ritual poetic speech, which until recently was an important source of authority, tradition, and identity. But it has also given rise to new and hybrid forms of poetic expression. This first study to analyse language change in relation to political marginality argues that political coercion or cognitive process of 'style reduction' may partially explain what has happened, but equally important in language shift is the role of linguistic ideologies.

And perhaps a surprising number of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have excelled in college and even professional football before the 1960s. Finally, acknowledging the impressive influx of elite Pacific Islander gridders who surfaced in the late twentieth and early twenty-first century, it is vital to note as well the racialized nativism shadowing the lives of these athletes.
