Joe Tarantino describes the fifth and final leg of his 3,600-mile bicycle ride across the North American continent started thirty-one years earlier. Previous trips had left him with nearly 1,700 miles remainingfrom the Pacific coast to his prior stopping point in Winner, South Dakota, just east of the Badlands. After what began as a to-do on his bucket list, Joe eventually realized the final segment of his trip had become something God now wanted him to do. Riding by himself, Joe began his trip in Seaside, Oregon. He crossed the Columbia River over the Astoria-Megler Bridge into the state of Washington and was promptly greeted with record-high temperatures while crossing the Cascade Mountain range and eastern Washington deserts. Along the way, Joe encountered folks from all walks of life and demographics who provided support and encouragement at the times he needed it most. His wife, Barbara, eventually met him in Harrison, Idaho, driving a rented SUV, providing additional support and sharing in his daily adventures. In addition to the record heat, mountain ranges, and deserts, they also endured a 5.8-magnitude earthquake while staying in a one-hundred-year-old log cabin hotel in a remote area of Montana, the epicenter occurring only a few miles from where they had spent the night. Joe describes how God answered daily prayers for protection and provided new insights into Psalm 23 through the people and circumstances he encountered each day. Joes description of his trip will help you understand not only the physical challenges of such a journey but deep insight into his mind during the daily rides. Filmmakers' fascination with opera dates back to the silent era but it was not until the late 1980s that critical enquiries into the intersection of opera and cinema began to emerge. Jeongwon Joe focusses primarily on the role of opera as soundtrack by exploring the distinct effects opera produces in film, effects which differ from other types of soundtrack music, such as jazz or symphony. These effects are examined from three perspectives: peculiar qualities of the operatic voice; various properties commonly associated with opera, such as excess, otherness or death; and multifaceted tensions between opera and cinema - for instance, opera as live, embodied, high art and cinema as technologically mediated, popular entertainment. Joe argues that when opera excerpts are employed on soundtracks they tend to appear at critical moments of the film, usually associated with the protagonists, and the author explores why it is opera, not symphony or jazz, that accompanies poignant scenes like these. Joe's film analysis focuses on the time period of the post-1970s, which is distinguished by an increase of opera excerpts on soundtracks to blockbuster titles, the commercial recognition of which promoted the production of numerous opera soundtrack CDs in the following years. Joe incorporates an empirical methodology by examining primary sources such as production files, cue-sheets and unpublished interviews with film directors and composers to enhance the traditional hermeneutic approach. The films analysed in her book include Woody Allen’s Match Point, David Cronenberg’s M. Butterfly, and Wong Kar-wai’s 2046.

Distinguishing the artist's personal and professional personas, it traces Joseph's career trajectory and artistic output, emphasizing how the director's construction of a multifaceted filmmaking persona operates in tandem with his artworks to challenge fixed, unidimensional or stable notions of identity. Through biographical study and deep examinations of the director's respective transmedia artworks, this book draws from various discussions shaped by Paul Gilroy's ground-breaking text The Black Atlantic (1993). By applying The Black Atlantic's disruptive audiocentric ideas to contemporary digital media forms generated by Kahlil Joseph and his peers alike, this book challenges the latent Eurocentricity on which dominant theorizations of 'modernity' – as well as the overlapping fields of Film, Media and Screen Studies – are grounded.
