Not all of the men come home. The Immigrante is a story of undying love, sacrifice and courage aEUR" from trying to find a way to escape the sometimes aEUR" horrible lives of our four people to the honor and sacrifice of everyone in the story as they seek to become Americans, despite the sometimes aEUR" difficult wandering to reach that goal. Anyone reading The Immigrante, with relatives that have come to America, will find the characters just like those in their own family.
Serial Drawing offers a timely and rigorous exploration of a relatively little-researched art form. Serial drawings – artworks that are presented as singular works but are made up of distributed parts – are studied in fresh, contemporary terms with a novel philosophical approach, emphasizing both the way in which this unique form of visual art exists in the world, and how it is encountered by the beholder. Inspired by the quadruple framework of Graham Harman's object-oriented ontology, Joe Graham explores a variety of serial drawings according to the idea that, in being serially arrayed, such artworks constitute a rather particular form of art object: one which is both unified yet pluralised, visible yet withdrawn. Examining works by artists such as Alexei Jawlensky, Ellsworth Kelly, Hanne Darboven, Jill Baroff and Stefana McClure, Graham interrogates the manner in which serial drawings are able to be appreciated by the viewer who beholds them in object-oriented terms. This task is carried out by paying attention to the manner in which three tensions – space, time and seriality –emerge for consideration within the beholders performative encounter with the work: an encounter which is 'seen serially', and which the medium of drawing specifically directs their attention towards.
This title was first published in 2000: An ethnographic inquiry into the socio-cultural dynamics of the Vietnamese asylum seeker detention centres in Hong Kong during the period of 1988-1995. It deals essentially with the British asylum policy towards Vietnamese refugees and its outcome in Hong Kong. Based on the author's first hand experience of working in refugee camps, this book argues that the administrators managed to solve the crisis by perpetuating horrendous human rights violations and subsequent ethnocide of the asylum seekers trapped in the detention centres.
At the heart of some of the most beloved children’s novels is a passionate discussion about discipline, love, and the changing role of girls in the twentieth century. Joe Sutliff Sanders traces this debate as it began in the sentimental tales of the mid-nineteenth century and continued in the classic orphan girl novels of Louisa May Alcott, Frances Hodgson Burnett, L. M. Montgomery, and other writers still popular today. Domestic novels published between 1850 and 1880 argued that a discipline that emphasized love was the most effective and moral form. These were the first best sellers in American fiction, and by reimagining discipline as a technique of the heart—rather than of the whip—they ensured their protagonists a secure, if limited, claim on power. This same ideal was adapted by women authors in the early twentieth century, who transformed the sentimental motifs of domestic novels into the orphan girl story made popular in such novels as Anne of Green Gables and Pollyanna. Through close readings of nine of the most influential orphan girl novels, Sanders provides a seamless historical narrative of American children’s literature and gender from 1850 until 1923. He follows his insightful literary analysis with chapters on sympathy and motherhood, two themes central to both American and children’s literature, and concludes with a discussion of contemporary ideas about discipline, abuse, and gender. Disciplining Girls writes an important chapter in the history of American, women’s, and children’s literature, enriching previous work about the history of discipline in America.
Part culinary adventure, part serious cookbook, Sea and Smoke chronicles the plucky ambition of a young chef to establish a world-class dining destination in an unlikely place. A native of the Pacific Northwest, two-time James Beard winning chef Blaine Wetzel saw Lummi Island, a rugged place with fewer than 1,000 residents off the coast of Seattle, as the ideal venue for his unique brand of hyperlocalism. Sea and Smoke is a culinary celebration of what is good, flavorful, and nearby, with recipes like Herring Roe on Kelp with Charred Dandelions and Smoked Mussels creating an intimate relationship between the food and landscape of the Pacific Northwest. The smokehouse, the fisherman, and the farmer yield the ingredients for unforgettable meals at The Willows Inn, a reflection of Wetzel's commitment both to locally-sourced ingredients and the sights, smells, and tastes of the foggy, coastal environment of Lummi Island. Award-winning journalist Joe Ray tells the tale of the Inn's rise to stardom, documenting how all the pieces came together to make a reservation at Wetzel's remote restaurant one of the most sought-after in the world.
The rich, poignant tales of major league baseball’s most hard-luck fraternity—the pitchers of its Almost-Perfect Games From 1908 to 2015, there have been thirteen pitchers who have begun Major League Baseball games by retiring the first twenty-six opposing batters, but then, one out from completing a perfect game, somehow faltering (or having perfection stolen from them). Three other pitchers did successfully retire twenty-seven batters in a row, but are still not credited with perfect games. While stories of pitching the perfect game have been told and retold, Almost Perfect looks at how baseball, at its core, is about heartbreak, and these sixteen men are closer to what baseball really is, and why we remain invested in the sport. Author Joe Cox visits this notion through a century of baseball and through these sixteen pitchers—recounting their games in thrilling fashion, telling the personal stories of the fascinating (and very human) baseball figures involved, and exploring the historical American and baseball backdrops of each flawed gem. From George “Hooks” Wiltse's nearly perfect game in 1908 to “Hard Luck” Harvey Haddix’s 12-inning, 36-consecutive-outs performance on May 26, 1959 (the most astounding single-game pitching performance in baseball history) to Max Scherzer’s near miss in 2015, Joe Cox’s book captures the action, the humanity, and the history of the national pastime’s greatest “almosts.”

The Man Who Came and Went, a novel of the new west, is a magically realistic story for the modern era that will tease your understanding and beliefs, and draw you into the mysteries of the universe, from the brilliant mind of Joe Stillman, acclaimed Academy Award nominated co-writer of “Shrek.” Fifteen-year-old Belutha Mariah, our storyteller, is the oldest of three kids from three different fathers. Her life’s goal is to keep her dysfunctional mom, Maybell, from procreating yet again and then to leave the coffin-sized town of Hadley, Arizona the second she graduates high school. Along comes the new grill cook at Maybell’s Diner, Bill Bill, a mysterious drifter with the ability to mind-read orders. As word spreads in Hadley and beyond, the curious and desperate pour into this small desert town to eat at Maybell's. Some believe Bill knows the secrets of the universe. Belutha figures he’s probably nuts. But his cooking starts to transform the lives of locals and visitors, and Belutha finds her angry heart opening, as Bill begins to show her the porous boundary between this life and what comes after. In a normal American town, something new and strange, and yet achingly familiar, begins to unfold.
A sportswriter and lifelong student of the game, Posnanski that tells the story of baseball through the lives of its greatest players. The result is a rich pageant of baseball history, and stories that have long gone unheard. -- adapted from jacket
It's been one year since a virus triggered junk DNA and people all over the world started changing. Becoming something else. Craving blood. It's been ten months since the word 'vampire' stopped being something from old monster stories and Hollywood movies. It's been six months since our world and theirs erupted into war. It's been two months since an uneasy peace was signed. It's been one hour since that peace was shattered. The war is here again. The vampire war. Our world will burn. Our world will bleed! When anyone can turn, when every street is a battlefield, there is nowhere to run! V-Wars: Blood and Fire is edited and co-written by New York Times bestselling author Jonathan Maberry and features all new stories of the Vampire Wars by Kevin J. With a style reminiscent of early David Morell and Stephen Hunter, in Bringing Back the Dead, Joe Domenici presents a classic tale of military honor pushed to its outer extreme, and the clash that inevitably occurs when those who use violence to corrupt, meet those who use it to protect. Newly retired from the U.S. Army Special Forces, and settling into a quiet retirement in the American Southwest, Ted Hickman thought he'd seen his last battle. Then he picked up the phone... After the horrors of Vietnam, for Larry Yoder, the study of theology made the world make sense again. Until his work as a Pastor took him to Belle Glade, Florida. A town built on dark secrets, and run by an old boy network bent on keeping them buried. Two qualities that made Yoder's devotion to faith and honesty dangerous. And although you won't hear it from the local cops, maybe had something to do with his sudden disappearence. Except, Yoder knows a few people whose loyalty lies outside Belle Glade's channels of power. Like Ted Hickman. Long ago, as a special forces commander in Vietnam, Hickman made a pledge to defend Yoder's life at any cost. So when Hickman gets the call that Yoder is missing, it doesn't take much convincing to get him and some of the old Vietnam "A" team on the first plane to Belle Glade. A place, located dead in the center of the Florida Everglades, where men with skills honed in the jungles of Southeast Asia might prove useful in getting some answers...
Few experts picked the Reds to win the National League Central Division Championship. Loaded with great young talent, the team was expected to move up in the standings and maybe even to break its nine-year streak of losing seasons. But win the division? Hardly. No one realized the level of heart and tenacity this team possessed, the pluck and verve this team could summon in the face of adversity. The Reds came from behind to win 45 games, and whenever they took a tough loss, they bounced back the next game. They truly were "The Comeback Kids." As baseball fans throughout the country waited for them slide back to expectations, they just kept hustling--and winning. The Reds led the league in many offensive categories, with a lineup anchored by budding superstar Joey Votto and aging veteran Scott Rolen. Though the pitching staff lacked a true ace, many pitchers contributed quality games. The bullpen did the same, until September, when heralded phenom Aroldis Chapman came up from the minor leagues and threw 100 mph fastballs, taking the staff to a whole new level. The Comeback Kids tells the remarkable story of the 2010 Reds, a team that relied on every player to achieve a stunning division championship. Featuring nearly 100 photos, this full-color book is the ultimate keepsake for every Reds fan, helping them remember a season, and a team, they never want to forget.

What sort of thing is a theatre image? How is it produced and consumed? Who is responsible for the images? Why do the images stay with us when the performance is over? How do we learn to speak of what we see and imagine? And how do we relate what we experience in the theatre to what we share with each other of the world? The Illuminated Theatre is a book about theatricality and spectatorship in the early twenty-first century. In a wide-ranging analysis that draws upon theatrical, visual and philosophical approaches, it asks how spectators and audiences negotiate the complexities and challenges of contemporary experimental performance arts. It is also a book about how European practitioners working across a range of forms, from theatre and performance to dance, opera, film and visual arts, use images to address the complexities of the times in which their work takes place. Through detailed and impassioned accounts of works by artists such as Dickie Beau, Wendy Houstoun, Alvis Hermanis and Romeo Castellucci, along with close readings of experimental theoretical and art writing from Gillian Rose to T.J. Clark and Marie-José Mondzain, the book outlines the historical, aesthetic and political dimensions of a contemporary ‘suffering of images.’

At the last moment, God's intervention saves the author and brings him to a realization that there is hope in continuing to live. Anger, self-hatred, self-pity and regret are ever-present, but with God's help and interaction with other people, he begins the journey back to life. “How can the NCAA blithely wreck careers without regard to due process or common fairness? How can it act so ruthlessly to enforce rules that are so petty? Why won’t anybody stand up to these outrageous violations of American values and American justice?” In the four years since Joe Nocera asked those questions in a controversial New York Times column, the National Collegiate Athletic Association has come under fire. Fans have begun to realize that the athletes involved in the two biggest college sports, men’s basketball and football, are little more than indentured servants. Millions of teenagers accept scholarships to chase their dreams of fame and fortune—at the price of absolute submission to the whims of an organization that puts their interests dead last. For about 5 percent of top-division players, college ends with a golden ticket to the NFL or the NBA. But what about the overwhelming majority who never turn pro? They don’t earn a dime from the estimated $13 billion generated annually by college sports—an ocean of cash that enriches schools, conferences, coaches, TV networks, and apparel companies . . . everyone except those who give their blood and sweat to entertain the fans. Indentured tells the dramatic story of a loose-knit group of rebels who decided to fight the hypocrisy of the NCAA, which blathers endlessly about the purity of its “student-athletes” while exploiting many of them: The ones who get injured and drop out because their scholarships have been revoked. The ones who will neither graduate nor go pro. The ones who live in terror of accidentally violating some obscure rule in the four-hundred-page NCAA rulebook. Joe Nocera and Ben Strauss take us into the inner circle of the NCAA’s fiercest enemies. You’ll meet, among others . . . ·Sonny Vaccaro, the charismatic sports marketer who convinced Nike to sign Michael Jordan. Disgusted by how the NCAA treated athletes, Vaccaro used his intimate knowledge of its secrets to blow the whistle in a major legal case. ·Ed O’Bannon, the former UCLA basketball star who realized, years after leaving college, that the NCAA was profiting from a video game using his image. His lawsuit led to an unprecedented antitrust ruling. ·Ramogi Huma, the founder of the National College Players Association, who dared to think that college players should have the same collective bargaining rights as other Americans. ·Andy Schwarz, the controversial economist who looked behind the façade of the NCAA and saw it for what it is: a cartel that violates our core values of free enterprise. Indentured reveals how these and other renegades, working sometimes in concert and sometimes alone, are fighting for justice in the bare-knuckles world of college sports.

The Cajun is an action-romance that is a little Crocodile Dundee and a little Rambo. Logline: With a million dollar reward on her head, Kelli Parsons hides in the treacherous Atchafalaya Swamp where living or dying depends on one man--the Cajun!Synopsis:Kelli Parsons, a beautiful tough writer, has written a series of articles about the religious practices of the Muslims. Now a fatwa or contract for her death, along with it a million dollar reward has forced her to run from the terrorists. While in protective custody of the FBIs lead agent Richard Staley, who is willing to give her up for part of the reward, they are ambushed on the 20-mile bridge crossing Louisiana’s, Atchafalaya Swamp. In a desperate escape attempt, Kelli jumps into the swamps where the swamp wise and mysterious Cajun, Ballew Dragun, rescues her.The terrorists led by the cold-blooded killer, Kaja Aboujawadeh, pursue her into the swamps with seven of his men. The Cajun catches them all and later releases them with the promise of death if they return. But Kaja is not to be denied and returns with 24 men, including two of the best in the world, Mustafa and Kidane. None of the men have ever tasted defeat. Their force captures Kelli along with two of Ballew's friends, Happy Jak the rotund and jolly bar owner and Belle Rose the old, tobacco chewing, voodoo chanting, woman of the swamps they call "Swamp Witch."While trying to rescue his friends Ballew is tortured and almost killed but manages to escape with Kelli. After he rescues his friends, he returns to the terrorist to exact his Cajun revenge. Using the swamp and all of her secrets, Ballew follows and kills the terrorists one by one, but not without the help of Kelli who saves his life. The Franchise:The Cajun would be a little Indiana Jones with a mix of Lethal Weapon. A buddy movie where one of the characters is a strong female lead. The stories will deal with current news stories and events that will hold the viewer attention and interest. I have a completed script (and novel) for "The Cajun. I have started the sequel and have outlines for four more that are listed below. The main character is Ballew Dragon, who is swamp wise and mysterious. Some think his mother is the Swamp Witch. His buddy in the series is Kelli Parsons a beautiful, tough writer who is on the run from terrorists after her scorching articles on the Islamic faith.Returning characters are:Richard Staley - The FBI agent who is willing to give up Kelli for part of the reward, but changes and saves her in the end.Happy Jak Chamblee - He is Ballew's friend and runs a bar in the swamps called; "Happy Jak's." Belle Rose - the old, tobacco chewing, voodoo chanting, woman of the swamps they call "the Swamp Witch." The Cajun is a natural to lead into an adventure cartoon for kids dealing with all of the animals in the swamp. The Cajun could also make for a very interesting video game. The main character is part Crocodile Dundee and part Rambo (First Blood). This is perfect for a series of movies. I have three sequels ready to start. This would make a great graphic novel and even video game. I have also written a novel to the script. There are six sequels I’m working for The Cajun series.HijackedAtchafalayaParadise LostCajun JusticeKidnappedSwamp Rats
Award winning fine artist Joe Pearce brings wisdom, humor, and creative perspective to the trials, tribulations, and party that is life. After growing up in the drug culture of the 70’s, Joe Pearce turned to a fundamentalist church for personal redemption. He felt called to become a traveling evangelist and musical artist, which is how he met his wife. Joe eventually transitioned away from that belief system to become part of corporate America. Joe was working a job in financial services, 20 years into marriage, when his wife developed severe schizophrenia. The Art of My Life explores Joe’s struggles with care taking for, and coping with, his wife’s illness. Joe tells a raw, blatantly honest narrative of his unique life experiences while weaving in themes of his and other's art with the hopes of helping people find their passion along their own unique paths.
This book explores the policies and ideologies of a number of individuals and groups who attempted to relaunch fascist, antisemitic and racist politics in the wake of World War II and the Holocaust. Despite the leading architects of fascism being dead and the newsreel footage of Jewish bodies being pushed into mass graves seared into societal consciousness, fascism survived World War II and, though changed, survives to this day. Britain was the country that ‘stood alone’ against fascism, but it was no exception. This book treads new historical ground and shines a light onto the most understudied period of British fascism, whilst simultaneously adding to our understanding of the evolving ideology of fascism, the persistent nature of antisemitism and the blossoming of Britain’s anti-immigration movement. This book will primarily appeal to scholars and students with an interest in the history of fascism, antisemitism and the Holocaust, racism, immigration and postwar Britain.
I hope the poems in this book bring smile, a thought, or an understanding about life in more ways than one. My third book will be a novel and is already in the making and, hopefully, will be out sometime in 2018. The title is complete but will not be revealed until a later time. If you like reading trilogies, I truly hope you enjoy reading this book of poems. My wife, Orelia (Cookie), is, and will always be, my inspiration. And I know that she will be forever grateful for many of the poems included in this book. I also hope you will enjoy reading this book of poems.
Perhaps only someone who has worked for almost a decade as a medic in New York City's Hell's Kitchen--as Joe Connelly has--could write a novel as riveting and fiercely authentic as Bringing Out the Dead. Like a front-line reporter, Connelly writes from deep within the experience, and the result is a debut novel of extraordinary power and intensity. In Frank Pierce, a brash EMS medic working the streets of Hell's Kitchen, Connelly gives us a man who is being destroyed by the act of saving people. Addicted to the thrill ("the best drug in the world") and the mission of the job, Frank is nevertheless drowning in five years' worth of grief and guilt--his own and others': "my primary role was less about saving lives than about bearing witness." His wife has left him, he's drinking on the job, and just a month ago he "helped to kill" an eighteen-year-old asthmatic girl. Now she's become the waking nightmare of all his failures: hallucination and projection ("the ghosts that once visited my dreams had followed me out to the street and were now talking back"), and as real to him as his own skin. And in reaction to her death, Frank has desperately resurrected a patient back into a life now little better than death. In a narrative that moves with the furious energy of an ambulance run, we follow Frank through two days and nights: into the excitement and dread of the calls; the mad humor that keeps the medics afloat; the memories, distant and recent, through which Frank reminds himself why he became a medic and tries, in vain, to convince himself to give it up. And we are with him as he faces his newest ghost: the resurrected patient, whose demands to be released into death might be the most sensible thing Frank has heard in months, if only he would listen. Bringing Out the Dead is a stunning novel.
