This book invites readers to join Joe Gartman, culture columnist for Italia! Magazine, on a journey to 80 of Rome's celebrated fountains, to find a more intimate way of experiencing the Eternal City. On foot with book in hand, or simply in imagination, each chapter takes readers on a vivid walk, enhanced with colorful, revealing photographs of Roman life. Every fountain in Rome tells a story; every story is about Rome: her history, her legends, and her extraordinary people, from poets to popes, artists to models, architects to emperors. Every street, piazza, wall and garden that contains a fountain has a past worth knowing. The reader is invited to follow the paths in this book, with 15 different turn-by-turn walking tours, 17 maps, and 181 photos. There are plenty of things to see along the way, especially the artistic treasures that await behind unexpected doors. In your armchair or on your feet, journey from Trevi's torrents to the Naiad's naughty nymphs; from the quiet basins in Piazza San Simeone to Bernini's mighty Four Rivers in Piazza Navona; from the Dark Fountains in Villa Borghese to the charming lionesses in Piazza del Popolo; and listen to the voices of the water.
This book discusses the “special call” to ministry and describes how our calling is interconnected with the other key areas of life. God’s callings for our lives include a broad spectrum of areas. Our Creator, who “knits us together in our mother’s womb,” places within our hearts and minds our purpose for our being on earth, and out of that context calls us to serve the needs of His Kingdom—sometimes in specific ways. While not everyone is called to dedicate their careers to ministry, everyone is called to engage in the Lord’s work on some level and many times to multiple tasks in life. This book examines the wide range of those callings and focuses on the “special call” to ministry. This book answers many of the questions students have about the “special call” to ministry and is written to guide young people as they choose their career fields—especially in ministry. In working in higher education for over four decades, the author has observed many students struggle to determine which major they should take in college and decide whether they are called to the ministry. The second part of the book is dedicated to finding God’s will for our lives. Upon graduation, many ministry students seek to know which ministry opportunity they should take. However, there are other times when our calling comes directly from our Creator. God calls us and we know with conviction that He has called us. There are other times when our calling flows out of the situation we find ourselves in—and sometimes this is not of our own choosing. At other times our callings are connected to the choices that we make. For example, when we choose to get married, we take on the calling of serving our spouse. In all of life, God masterfully uses our circumstances to call us to His work.

For many years I have had an interest in the equality of women and men, particularly in the church, where it has been woefully lacking for the most part. More recently Fundamentalist theologians have become increasingly blatant in asserting that the Bible teaches subordination of women to men both inside and outside the church. I have argued that this idea results from an irresponsible proof-texting from the Bible. I am convinced that, when taken as a whole, looking at all passages referring to women, the Bible supports the complete equality of women with men. I have undertaken to demonstrate this fact by looking carefully at the stories of women in the Bible, both named and unnamed, who were not submissive to men and who refused to settle for the role which their society attempted to assign them. I have taken these passages from the Bible and interpreted them within the context into which they are placed, to the degree that this can be determined. My goal was to find every story in the Bible in which a woman stepped out of her societal role and did something only men were supposed to do. I leave to the reader to decide whether or not I have succeeded.
Chewing On Tinfoil is storytelling at its best: highly visual, understated yet wrapped in imagination, and filled with the truth and humour of the human condition.

Shocked by the Bible sets the record straight with well-researched, controversial, myth-breaking assertions about what the Bible really does—and doesn’t—say. And guess on which day the Bible says Jesus died. Believe it or not, the Good Book doesn't mention Friday, and even more surprisingly, while the Bible says Jesus rose from the grave, it does not say it occurred Sunday morning. Remember, Jesus' followers found an empty tomb then. But don't feel bad if you've always assumed otherwise. Like countless millions of people, you've just been misinformed, misled or even (dare we say) lied to about what the Bible actually says. In a stunning investigation, news veteran Joe Kovacs goes on a mission to help both Christians and non-Christians alike find out what the Bible really contains, and what it doesn't. "Shocked by the Bible: The Most Astonishing Facts You've Never Been Told" is an educational juggernaut that relies solely on the Holy Bible to reveal hundreds of Scriptural facts that many people of all persuasions simply don't know. The book instantly skyrocketed to the No. 1 position in three Bible-related categories on Amazon.com. "I'm among the biggest fans of the Bible of all time," says Kovacs. "My goal is to educate people about the solid truth of Scripture and to stop the spread of erroneous information. I want people to crack open their Bibles and see with their own eyes what's actually printed on the pages, and what's not. It's shocking!" According to Scripture, you won't find "Three Wise Men" mentioned anywhere in the story of Jesus' birth. For that matter, none are said to have shown up at the manger in Bethlehem. The truth straight from your own Bible is that an unspecified number of wise men first met Jesus as a "young child" in a "house," not a babe in a manger, and it might have been more than a year after He was born. Go ahead, look it up for yourself. Also, according to Scripture, you won't find a single mention of Easter eggs, but you will find God warning His people not to have anything to do with a pagan fertility goddess, whose name is synonymous with "Easter." "Yes, I'm a Bible-believing Christian," says Kovacs. "But I'm not here to convert anyone. People are free to believe whatever they wish and can come to their own conclusions. I just want to show them the biblical record is often very different from what many assume. Not only will Christians love this book, but I think Jews, Muslims and even agnostics and atheists will get a kick out of it as well.
Florida has long been viewed as a land of hope and endless possibilities. Visionaries seeking to establish new communities where they could escape the influences of society at large have turned to Florida to construct their utopias--from the vast plantations of British philanthropists and entrepreneurs in the eighteenth century to the more exotic Koreshan Unity and its theory that humans live in the center of a Hollow Earth. Some came to the Sunshine State seeking religious freedom, such as the settlers in Moses Levy's Jewish colony, while others settled in Florida to establish alternative lifestyles, like the spiritualists of Cassadaga. Still others created their communities to practice new agricultural techniques or political philosophies. Historians Joe Knetsch and Nick Wynne examine a number of these distinctive utopian communities and how they have contributed to Florida's unique social fabric.
New York City, 1968. The RAND Corporation had presented an alluring proposal to a city on the brink of economic collapse: Using RAND's computer models, which had been successfully implemented in high-level military operations, the city could save millions of dollars by establishing more efficient public services. The RAND boys were the best and brightest, and bore all the sheen of modern American success. New York City, on the other hand, seemed old-fashioned, insular, and corrupt-and the new mayor was eager for outside help, especially something as innovative and infallible as "computer modeling." A deal was struck: RAND would begin its first major civilian effort with the FDNY. Over the next decade-a time New York City firefighters would refer to as "The War Years"-a series of fires swept through the South Bronx, the Lower East Side, Harlem, and Brooklyn, gutting whole neighborhoods, killing more than two thousand people and displacing hundreds of thousands. Conventional wisdom would blame arson, but these fires were the result of something altogether different: the intentional withdrawal of fire protection from the city's poorest neighborhoods-all based on RAND's computer modeling systems. Despite the disastrous consequences, New York City in the 1970s set the template for how a modern city functions-both literally, as RAND sold its computer models to cities across the country, and systematically, as a new wave of technocratic decision-making took hold, which persists to this day. In The Fires, Joe Flood provides an X-ray of these inner workings, using the dramatic story of a pair of mayors, an ambitious fire commissioner, and an even more ambitious think tank to illuminate the patterns and formulas that are now inextricably woven into the very fabric of contemporary urban life. The Fires is a must read for anyone curious about how a modern city works.
God's divine providence (his working "behind the scenes" for the betterment of mankind) has been truly amazing through the years, even more so than his performing of supernatural-by-definition miracles in days past. In this book, evangelist Joe Gladwell showcases God's divine providence by showing very strong evidence in favor of the Bible being delivered to mankind precisely the way he wanted us to have it. This is up to and including the placement of the divider page between Old and New Testaments in its natural place-right between the books of Malachi and Matthew.

For centuries, the Bible's dramatic accounts have inspired artists to express the beauty, emphasize the power, and elaborate on the meaning of God's Word. Each elective study in the Through Artists' Eyes series is designed to help people connect classic art to the Bible and then apply the truths discovered to their own lives. In God's Word in Stone you'll experience the artistry of six masterpieces of sculpture while discovering and discussing the scriptural inspiration behind each one. You'll explore the lives of Moses, Habakkuk, Haggai, Mary Magdalene, Paul the apostle, and the apostles. Each of the six sessions includes: • Selecting the Stone—an introductory, group-building activity that gives members an opportunity to share opinions about the main theme of study • Roughing out the Image—an examination of the work, life, and thoughts of the artist • Polishing the Art—a Bible study that places the work of the artist within biblical context • Displaying the Masterpiece—discussion questions that encourage group members to apply the principles of the study to daily life Additionally, each study features margin notes, tips for projecting the art, definitions of art terms, and suggested supplemental resources for further exploration.
After the destruction of the first temple in Jerusalem, the Jews were exiled to Babylon. Not only was there no longer a physical place to pray, even the sacred Scriptures were becoming scarce. Many of the biblical scrolls were lost or destroyed during the exile. In an attempt to preserve the Scriptures, the Rabbis divided up the biblical texts into weekly reading portions and distributed them among the families of Israel. Each was responsible for memorizing their assigned passage and then reading it in the synagogue every Sabbath. This system of reading is the basis for the story found in Luke 4:16-17: "He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. And he stood up to read. The scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him." This system is still in use today by Jews all over the world. In What Would Jesus Read?, Joe Amaral gives modern day Christians the opportunity to follow and practice the same devotional system that Jesus used!

In this inspirational yet practical book, the man Parade called “the most important coach in America,” subject of the national bestseller Season of Life, Joe Ehrmann, describes his coaching philosophy and explains how sports can transform lives at every level of play, from the earliest years to professional sports. Coaches have a tremendous platform, says Joe Ehrmann, a former Syracuse University All-American and NFL star. Perhaps second only to parents, coaches can impact young people as no one else can. But most coaches fail to do the teaching, mentoring, even life-saving intervention that their platform provides. Too many are transactional coaches; they focus solely on winning and meeting their personal needs. Some coaches, however, use their platform. They teach the Xs and Os, but also teach the Ys of life. They help young people grow into responsible adults; they leave a lasting legacy. These are the transformational coaches. These coaches change lives, and they also change society by helping to develop healthy men and women. InSideOut Coaching explains how to become a transformational coach. Coaches first have to “go inside” and articulate their reasons for coaching. Only those who have taken the InSideOut journey can become transformational. Joe Ehrmann provides examples of coaches in his life who took this journey and taught him how to find something bigger than himself in sports. He describes his own InSideOut experience, starting with the death of his beloved brother, which helped him understand how sports could transcend the playing field. He gives coaches the information and the tools they need to become transformational. Joe Ehrmann has taken his message about the extraordinary power of sports all over the country. It has been warmly endorsed by NFL head coaches, athletic directors at major universities, high school head coaches, even business groups and community organizations. Now any parent-coach or school or community coach can read Ehrmann’s message and learn how to make sports a life-changing experience.
A “meticulously researched and buoyantly written” (Esquire) look at what happens when we talk to strangers, and why it affects everything from our own health and well-being to the rise and fall of nations in the tradition of Susan Cain’s Quiet and Yuval Noah Harari’s Sapiens “This lively, searching work makes the case that welcoming ‘others’ isn’t just the bedrock of civilization, it’s the surest path to the best of what life has to offer.”—Ayad Akhtar, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of Homeland Elegies In our cities, we stand in silence at the pharmacy and in check-out lines at the grocery store, distracted by our phones, barely acknowledging one another, even as rates of loneliness skyrocket. Online, we retreat into ideological silos reinforced by algorithms designed to serve us only familiar ideas and like-minded users. In our politics, we are increasingly consumed by a fear of people we’ve never met. But what if strangers—so often blamed for our most pressing political, social, and personal problems—are actually the solution? In The Power of Strangers, Joe Keohane sets out on a journey to discover what happens when we bridge the distance between us and people we don’t know. He learns that while we’re wired to sometimes fear, distrust, and even hate strangers, people and societies that have learned to connect with strangers benefit immensely. Digging into a growing body of cutting-edge research on the surprising social and psychological benefits that come from talking to strangers, Keohane finds that even passing interactions can enhance empathy, happiness, and cognitive development, ease loneliness and isolation, and root us in the world, deepening our sense of belonging. And all the while, Keohane gathers practical tips from experts on how to talk to strangers, and tries them out himself in the wild, to awkward, entertaining, and frequently poignant effect. Warm, witty, erudite, and profound, equal parts sweeping history and self-help journey, this deeply researched book will inspire readers to see everything—from major geopolitical shifts to trips to the corner store—in an entirely new light, showing them that talking to strangers isn’t just a way to live; it’s a way to survive.

God promises to take care of the needs that we have. We need to understand that when we worry, we are failing to trust in a dependable and a good God for our basic needs. What a bad witness to the world it is when Christian people worry. Sometimes we convince ourselves that we trust in the Lord with our whole heart, but when push comes to shove, we don't really trust Him. It is easy for us to say at times, 'I fully depend on God.' However, it becomes a little bit more difficult when times are slightly rough. It becomes a little more difficult when we do not know how we're going to pay our bills. So what do we do? We worry!" "Moses is a great example of how worry can gripe us even while we are standing in the very presence of God. It is so important for us as the children of God to keep our hearts and minds washed in the blood of the lamb and have the Word of God written on the tablets of our hearts so when God speaks we receive it with gladness and act on it with boldness!" "Truly seeing the world through God's eyes is another piece of the puzzle to turn our worry around. A big question that we all need to answer is do we really see the world around us through God's eyes or our own eyes?" "You see everything in life begins and ends with Jesus Christ. When we accept Jesus into our hearts, we then have the access to all the benefits that this relationship brings and one of those great gifts is his peace." Isaiah 53:5 says, "He was wounded for our transgressions and bruised for our iniquities and the Chastisement of our peace was on him and by his stripes we are healed.
The proliferation of work on the theological hermeneutics of Scripture in recent years has challenged and reimagined the divisions between systematic theology and biblical studies on the one hand and academy and church on the other. Also notable, however, has been the absence of a full-length treatment of theological interpretation from a Wesleyan perspective. This monograph develops a Wesleyan theological hermeneutic of Scripture, approached as a craft learned from a tradition-constituted appropriation of John Wesley’s hermeneutics. This hermeneutic requires a descriptive analysis of the context, grammar, and ruled reading of the literal sense in Wesley’s interpretive practices, as well as critical interaction with the analysis in light of contemporary issues. As a result of this interaction, continuity and discontinuity between Wesley’s and Wesleyan interpretation emerges and is accounted for. The Wesleyan theological hermeneutic developed here defines the church as Spirit-formed context within the larger divine economy of salvation, in contrast with Wesley’s emphasis on individual soteriology and underdeveloped ecclesiology. Within this community context, Wesleyan theological interpretation is a means of grace whereby the Holy Spirit reinterprets the identity of readers into children of God. Theological interpretation invites readers on a Wesleyan account to participate in the textually mediated identity of Jesus Christ through the gracious work of the Holy Spirit. Wesleyan identity is therefore a figurally created identity based on the literal sense of Scripture. Wesley’s analogy of faith, which rules his reading of Scripture, thus gives way to a more explicitly trinitarian rule of faith.
Work is the place where we spend the majority of our lives— yet it is the place where God is experienced the least. Experiencing God in Your Work gives inspirational perspectives and practical ideas on how to discover God in the normal flow of your everyday work life. Compelling personal stories, anecdotes, and quotations from both classic and modern Christian thinkers, makes this biblical based guide a great choice for either personal study or group discussion. “Joe Carroll skillfully addresses the key issues every worker faces – practically, biblically and with understanding of the dilemma of work and life. His writing has the aroma of reality and the empathy of one who has lived what he writes. This is a vital book for everyone who works… ” Jerry White, PhD • Major General, USAF, Ret, International President Emeritus – The Navigators “As a workplace follower of Christ, Joe brings a unique perspective to men and women who would like to experience the joy of seeing God at work in their work but all too often fall asleep spiritually. Using both workplace and biblical examples, this study will help you awaken to and enjoy Christ’s presence in your work.” Bill Peel, DMin • Executive Director, Center for Faith & Work at LeTourneau University “This book looks at how to work effectively and wisely from a myriad of angles. It is loaded with solid practical and biblical advice. It will change the way you work, not just by answering why you work but showing how meaningful work can be.” Darrell Bock, PhD • Senior Research Professor of New Testament Studies Executive Director for Cultural Engagement, Dallas Theological Seminary “I know from experience that Joe Carroll lives and writes with the same aim--to help us connect with God in our work. It is easy to see myself in the real world stories he shares. While the book provides God’s perspective on work from a Biblical perspective, almost everyone will benefit from the chapters on experiencing God’s presence in your work. For me, the chapters on living courageously and living with integrity were the most helpful in giving me perspective for my own work and for the students who ask my advice.” Michael K. Shaub, PhD • Clinical Professor of Accounting, Texas A & M University
There are many questions that almost every person ask at some point in life. Many puzzle over the implications of various potential answers before giving up and deciding to keep on living just for the moment—not concerned with any cosmic purpose or destiny.
Musician, artist, anti-smoker, ecological gadfly -- here is Mendelson Joe's story, in his own outrageous word. He believes that speaking out can make a difference, that women are the only hope for the future, and that there's truth in a good blues song. He doesn't believe in God, compromise, or schmaltz. Meet Mendelson Joe: musician, artist, activist, and avid writer of letters to Canadian politicians and editors. Alien brings together some of the best of Joe's artwork, along with extensive interviews with the man and the people who know him. Joe holds forth on the things that fascinate him: the female body, motorcycles, rabbits, nature, art, and music. He tells of touring the world with his blues-rock band Mendelson McKenna Mainline in the early '70s, sharing concert stages with burlesque strippers, and discovering a passion for art after rescuing a set of acrylic paints from a garbage can. He also talks about the things that make him angry: the stupidity of humans, who "piss where they drink," destroying the environment through greed and carelessness; the treatment of women by men; racism. And Joe's friends and colleagues talk about knowing this funny, talented, and deeply principled guy who's never afraid to speak his mind.
This novel explores the underbelly of the almost always politically incorrect world of politics and campaigning in Texas in the 1980s. Rose Marie "Red" Ryder made a name for herself by becoming the first female state comptroller of Texas and she is now running to become the first woman U.S. senator from the Lone Star State. Ryder's campaign team is a potluck of misfits and miscreants: a has-been evangelist's son who once ran a string of mobile massage parlors, veterans of the civil rights struggles, Austin lesbian activists, old-school political operatives with sterling motives and shady morals, and then there is Wily T. Foxx. Until he joined the campaign, almost entirely by accident, Wily's passion in life had been cock fighting. Now he is literally the candidate's "purse bearer," a combination bodyguard/campaign worker, privy to all of the political intrigue found on the campaign trail. In a state where the dead can rise and walk to the polls, ballot boxes can grow fat in counties with more cattle than people, and the votes of common folk can be disqualified on a whim, this lively and insightful novel captures the absurd and timeless qualities of running for political office.

An argument for inherent unity in all religious thought "Proving" the existence of God, In My Belief, Joe Isaac Gauthier draws parallels between the facts of science and the historical records and myths associated with the major religions of the world. Endeavoring to speak from a "neutral" platform, he points out the common ground within all monotheistic traditions, providing logical explanations to stories in the Bible, Qur'an, and other historical documents, and also interpreting the universal phenomena that human beings encounter in their search for meaning within theology or anthropology. My Belief is a message of unity in spite of the vast differences human beings all have in the understanding of our experiences. Gauthier's suggestion is that by applying scientific and logical reasoning to the history and content of all religions (even the religion of science), a harmonious evolution can be seen that can serve as a form of "proof" to the modern-day seeker who demands evidence of God. This marriage of science and religion is an attempt to provide some context for understanding the mysteries of the universe. Thinkers and seekers of all ages are challenged to consider the "proof" in My Belief and the appeal of the "Oneness" of a supreme energy that we are created by, exist within, and remain a part of. Book jacket.
This volume offers a synchronic, literary reading of the final form of the laws of Exodus 20.22-23.19 (commonly, though inaccurately labelled "The Book of the Covenant"), in contrast with primarily source- and form-critical approaches commonly utilized in the past. The work seeks to demonstrate that this literary unit is much more coherent, more integrated into its narrative context, less in need of the positing of corruptions, secondary insertions, rearrangements or the like than has usually been recognized. The approach instead seeks to find authorial purpose in each case where scholars have often posited scribal misadventure, "seams" between sources, disorder, contradiction, or corruption.
The Black people of Marks, Mississippi, and other rural southern towns were the backbone of the civil rights movement, yet their stories have too rarely been celebrated and are, for the most part, forgotten. Part memoir, part oral history, and part historical study, A Day I Ain’t Never Seen Before tells the story of the struggle for equality and dignity through the words of these largely unknown men and women and the civil rights workers who joined them. Deeply rooted in documentary and archival sources, this book also offers extensive suggestions for further readings on both Marks and the civil rights movement. Set carefully within its broader historical context, the narrative begins with the founding of the town and the oppressive conditions under which Black people lived and traces their persistent efforts to win the rights and justice they deserved. In their own words, Marks residents describe their lives before, during, and after the activist years of the civil rights movement, bolstered by the voices of those like Joe Bateman who arrived in the mid-1960s to help. Voter registration projects, white violence, sit-ins, arrests, school desegregation cases, community-organizing meetings, protest marches, Freedom Schools, door-to-door organizing—all of these played out in Marks. The broader civil rights movement intersects many of these local efforts, from Freedom Summer to the War on Poverty, from the death of a Marks man on the March against Fear (Martin Luther King Jr. preached at his funeral) to the Poor People’s Movement, whose Mule Train began in Marks. At each point Bateman and local activists detail how they understood what they were doing and how each protest action played out. The final chapters examine Marks in the aftermath of the movement, with residents reflecting on the changes (or lack thereof ) they have seen. Here are triumphs and beatings, courage and infighting, surveillance and—sometimes— lasting progress, in the words of those who lived it.
