Aside from these four Hall of Famers, the Academy football program also produced numerous collegiate head coaches at schools such as Illinois, Baylor, and Cincinnati, a Broadway playwright, an NFL official, and even a man who ascended to one of the highest political offices in the country. Along the way, Ziemba offers a glimpse at the history of the school itself (around since 1873) including student food strikes, financial challenges, one of the greatest unsolved crimes in Chicago gangland history, and the fact that over 800 graduates served in WWII, an astounding number for a prep school of this size. More than just a history of one school, Cadets, Cannons, and Legends is must reading for any lover of football. It traces the very history of the game, detailing significant rules changes that saved the sport after years of catastrophic deaths on the field (including one at the Academy). Political use of communication technology is rapidly changing the nature of politics; one need look no further than President Trump’s use of Twitter to realize the impact that communication technology is having on political processes. Communication technology has long been recognized as part of the policy feedback process, but until now, has received relatively little focus, often relegated to a line or two in a policy process theory system diagram labeled “feedback." This book takes a fresh look at the role that communication technology plays in the policy process by applying natural science control and electrical engineering concepts such as bandwidth, latency, phase crossover, and positive and negative feedback to develop the critical frequency theory of policy system stability. This theory suggests that every policymaking institution has some critical frequency of communications from the policy environment that once exceeded, causes the policymaking institution to go unstable, and it is this instability that causes the policymaking process to speed up. With the theory developed, data collected on approximately 2,000 state legislators from every state in the U.S. is analyzed using linear and nonlinear regression models to understand the statistically significant relationships between communication technology frequency of use and importance, and the demographic, political, and institutional variables that contribute to policy process stability and instability. Additionally, interviews with legislators uncover many novel and interesting examples of the use of communication technology in the policy process. For example, legislators note that lobbyists sitting in legislative chambers listening to floor debates are actually texting questions and answers to legislators as they debate; legislators participating in this process are acting as policymaking puppets for the lobbyists sitting in the gallery. This single use of a communication technology has the capability of changing the very nature of what it means to be a legislator; with lobbyists acting as surrogate legislators.

One of the toughest challenges is burying the house physician when he succumbs during the fight. Loyalty to one’s faith or to progress or to honor itself are grand phrases. The actual work at a shelter is hard and tedious, like growing a garden out of concrete.

This book tells the story of the shared history of the three federally recognized Choctaw tribes from before the first European contact in the 1530s and then provides the history and contemporary status of each of the three tribes separately. Rather than focusing on a single Choctaw group, this book offers for the first time a combined story of "the Choctaw" as the tribe comprises the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians, and the Jean Band of Choctaw Indians. The first portion of the book provides the archaeological history of the native groups that ultimately became the Choctaw, chronicling the development of the people in the southeastern portions of what is now the United States into the people who encountered the first Europeans to set foot on the continent. Though the tribe's contact with European colonists varied depending on the country from where the colonists originated, that contact was forever changed after the Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek of 1830 led to the fractionalization of the tribe: some Choctaws moved to what is now Oklahoma, some chose to remain in Mississippi, and others chose to stay in Louisiana. The remainder of the book studies the continued histories of each of the tribes in parallel, offering students and general readers a practicable resource for understanding the Choctaw within the broad context of American history.

In the late 1800’s Vauxhall located on the banks of the River Thames was an area of depravity. Its population mainly unemployed, were either sick or poverty stricken, desperately in need of both spiritual and medical care. In 1892. A certain Catholic priest. Father. William Francis Brown arrived in Vauxhall. His purpose to start a Catholic Mission to the poor and needy of Vauxhall. Against all odds he built, a school, then his Church, in doing so he created his Parish. His next aim was to establish his Settlement, he purchased a Hall and four houses, during which time Father. Brown was introduced to a Nurse, who had been trained in Midwifery, and Child Welfare, with a character similar to his own and spirit of determination to succeed in administering medical help to the sick and needy. Her name was Miss Grace Gordon Smith. Between them they formed a partnership to provide the spiritual and medical treatment for the poor and needy of his Parish. In 1924, Father Brown was Consecrated a Bishop. Bishop of Pella. His alliance with Grace continued and between them they established an order of Nuns and created the Dames of St. Joan, to forge the way for a service, years ahead of the future National Health Service. In 1935 saw the opening of his Settlement, which included a Youth Club for the boys and girls of his school and those outside his Parish. During the Second World War although bombed twice. The Settlement carried on administering medical care, and the Youth Club never closed. In 1944 Bishop Brown purchased a house in Ashstead Surrey, as a Hostel for the Youth of London to spend a week-end or week, away from the bombings of London. Affectionately known to all members of the Youth Club as: ‘The Bish’ and as ‘Old Pella’ to all the people of South London. His good work was recognised by the Municipal Authorities of Lambeth who named a block of flats in the Lambeth walk. ‘Pella House’. This story is the history of one man’s dream that came to fruition in the establishment of St. Anne’s Roman Catholic Settlement-Youth and Pella Club, from its founding in 1892 to the present day.
