Joe Dimaggio -- The Promise" is a sports book that highlights the New York Yankees of the 1950's an extrordinary time in baseball history. During this era, Casey Stengel began his legendary tenure as Yankee manager (1949), Joe DiMaggio ended and Mickey Mantle began their major league careers (1951). More than a sports book, it is an inspirational book that chronicles the Yankees exploits winning five Pennants and five World Championships in a row from 1949 to 1953. The reader is riveted to the book hoping to learn the secrets of success as illustrated by successful ball players in general but Joe DiMaggio in particular. Young Joe Carrieri, the author and former Yankee batboy, follows DiMaggio for three years and illustrates his class, style and grace. He was a man of few words who let his bat do his talking. He felt comfortable and at ease at the plate and in centerfield. He truly was born to play a boys game on sweet smelling green grass in a big city. He was born to play ball and play he did. The Yankee Clipper, Joe DiMaggio reveals to the author his secrets of success and also keeps a promise to his young batboy. Fifty years later, DiMaggio and Carrieri meet again and this time, it is Carrieri who keeps his promise to Joe DiMaggio. While we mourn his death, we sense that DiMaggio has not really left us. We sense that DiMaggio was more than a hero, he is a legend and legends never die. Whenever there are boys of summer playing baseball, DiMaggio will live in our minds and hearts forever. In a quiet moment, you may hear Public Address announcer, Bob Shepard, in his inimical voice exhort at a packed Yankee Stadium, "And now Ladies and Gentlemen, the greatest living ball player, JoeDiMaggio".
The autobiography of Jolting Joe Dimaggio, The Yankee Clipper, from the San Francisco sandlots to the big leagues. Includes personal stories of other baseball stars, Greenberg, Feller, Gehrig and others, and also includes DiMaggio's tips on playing baseball.

A sportswriter and lifelong student of the game, Posnanski that tells the story of baseball through the lives of its greatest players. His choices include iconic Hall of Famers, unfairly forgotten All-Stars, talents of today, and more. Rather than relying on records and statistics, he retraces players' origins, illuminates their characters, and places their accomplishments in the context of baseball's past and present. The result is a rich pageant of baseball history, and stories that have long gone unheard. -- adapted from jacket

You talk about destiny, well, you can't rule that out. We were hard-nosed and that showed up in 1957." -- Braves catcher Del Crandall to editor Gregory H. Wolf Few teams in baseball history have captured the hearts of their fans like the Milwaukee Braves of the 19505. During the Braves' 13-year tenure in Milwaukee (1953-1965), they had a winning record every season, won two consecutive NL pennants (1957 and 1958), lost two more in the final week of the season (1956 and 1959), and set big-league attendance records along the way. This book celebrates the Milwaukee Braves' historic 1957 World Series championship season. Led by the bats of National League Most Valuable Player Henry Aaron and slugging third baseman Eddie Mathews and the "Big Three" pitching trio (Cy Young Award winner Warren Spahn, Lew Burdette, and Bob Buhl) the Braves won 95 games. The team enjoyed standout seasons by shortstop Johnny Logan, outfielder Wes Covington, and catcher Del Crandall And GM John Quinn pulled off the biggest trade of the summer, acquiring All-Star second baseman Red Schoendienst from the New York Giants. The Braves cemented their place in history by defeating the New York Yankees in the World Series. In one of the greatest performances in the history of the fall classic, crafty Lew Burdette tossed his second consecutive shutout (and third complete game) to defeat the Bronx Bombers in Game Seven, in Yankee Stadium. A collaborative effort of 32 members of the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR), Thar's Joy in Braveland! The 1957 Milwaukee Braves portrays that memorable team with life stories of all of the roster players, the manager and coaching staff, the owner, the general manager, and sportswriters and radio announcers. Games between the Dodgers and Giants are never just another day at the ballpark. Dating back to the late nineteenth century—when the teams embodied the competitive spirit of rival metropolises of New York and Brooklyn—the Giants–Dodgers rivalry gained intensity throughout the early twentieth century. The cheering and jeering continued unabated until 1957, when the clubs backed the moving vans up to the Polo Grounds and Ebbets Field, and took their rivalry to new venues in Los Angeles and San Francisco. Indeed, Brooklyn–New York baseball was a tough act to follow, but the West Coast version didn’t take long to fire up the emotions. Only six games into the first West Coast season, the clubs had their first beanball dustup. The venue had changed but the venom remained, and the rivalry became author Joe Konte’s obsession. Fifty-five years ago, he attended one of the first Giants–Dodgers games ever played outside of New York. A longtime newspaper editor and baseball fiend, Konte understands what is so special about what is one of the most significant rivalries in American sports. And so—via statistical analysis, game summaries, roster scrutiny, manager matchups, season recaps, and more—he has put together a rivalry bible. Focusing primarily on the California years, but also providing background on the origins and the New York years, The Rivalry Heard ’Round the World captures the spirit and intensity of one of the greatest rivalries in American sports.
NEW YORK TIMES bestseller WALL STREET JOURNAL bestseller #1 New York Times bestselling author Joe Posnanski is back with a masterful ode to the game: a countdown of 50 of the most memorable moments in baseball’s history, to make you fall in love with the sport all over again. Posnanski writes of major moments that created legends, and of forgotten moments almost lost to time. It's Willie Mays’s catch, Babe Ruth’s called shot, and Kirk Gibson’s limping home run; the slickest steals; the biggest bombs; and the most triumphant no-hitters. But these are also moments raw with the humanity of the game, the unheralded heroes, the mesmerizing mistakes drenched in pine tar, and every story, from the immortal to the obscure, is told from a unique perspective. Whether of a real fan who witnessed it, or the pitcher who gave up the home run, the umpire, the coach, the opposing player—these are fresh takes on moments so powerful they almost feel like myth. Posnanski’s previous book, The Baseball 100, portrayed the heroes and pioneers of the sport, and now, with his trademark wit, encyclopedic knowledge, and acute observations, he gets at the real heart of the game. From nineteenth-century pitchers’ duels to breaking the sport’s color line in the ’40s, all the way to the greatest trick play of the last decade and the slide home that became a meme, Posnanski’s illuminating take allows us to rediscover the sport we love—and thought we knew. Why We Love Baseball is an epic that ends too soon, a one-of-a-kind love letter to the sport that has us thrilled, torn, inspired, and always wanting more.
The Immaculate Inning shines a light on the miracle of baseball’s endless possibility—the way that on any given day, someone (maybe a star, or maybe a scrub) could perform the rarest of single-game feats or cap off a seemingly unobtainable chase for a record. Covering a selection of the most unusual, significant, and rare feats in baseball history, both in the context of single-day (and sometimes even single-play) events and those that require a longer streak or a full season’s excellence to reach or complete, the book clearly defines how each task is amassed, provides historical background, and tells riveting stories of the ballplayers that did the unthinkable.
A veterinary degree is long and difficult but, above all, scientific. The world of a practicing vet is far from white coats, test tubes and theory, it is complex, full of human interactions and financial decisions. Understanding these concepts and how they can be managed is key to career longevity, a good work-life balance, and a sustainable profession. There is no wonder cure or magic pill, but this book will help to make things better.

Veteran broadcaster Joe Castiglione combines the story of his baseball adventures with the Cleveland Indians; the Milwaukee Brewers; and for twenty years, the Boston Red Sox, with a travelogue of major American cities.
In March of 1948, Jackie Robinson and the Brooklyn Dodgers came to Mobile, Alabama, on a whistle stop tour to play an unremarkable exhibition game that had remarkable consequences for the city, the black community, and for baseball itself. Thrilled to see the man who broke major league baseball's color barrier, Robinson's brief appearance fueled a passion for the game among the city's black population. One man, however, saw more than just excitement for a sport. Thirty-year-old Jesse Norwood saw a way to help the kids who would congregate beyond his stoop, lost and hopeless in the segregated South of the 1950s. Though having no baseball experience at any level, he realized he could take the model of the game and build it into a sense of dignity and pride. Here's to You, Jackie Robinson: the Legend of the Prichard Mohawks is the story of a man who transformed a gang of scrawny youngsters into both a team and a genuine force in the community. Norwood emerges as a figure worthy of legend, and his legacy can still be felt today. With a novelist's gift for storytelling, Formichella breathes life into a South long gone and creates a hero's story, sometimes heartwarming and sometimes heartbreaking, that begins in a sandlot and ends in the Baseball Hall of Fame.
After 20 major league seasons—all with the New York Yankees—Derek Jeter is hanging up his spikes at the conclusion of the 2014 campaign. The Yankees' captain since 2003, the shortstop is considered the greatest Yankee of his generation. Jeter's Yankees teams won five World Series, including three in a row in 1998, 1999, and 2000. The all-time postseason leader in hits, doubles, and triples, Jeter earned the nickname “Captain Clutch” for his game-changing performances during the Yankees' championship era. Through stories and powerful images from the pages of the New York Times, Derek Jeter: Excellence and Elegance celebrates the career of this New York icon from Jeter's debut in 1995 through his final game in 2014. This full-color pictorial keepsake also features an introduction by Tyler Kepner, the Times' award-winning baseball reporter.
Pay it no mind." From the very beginning, the odds were against Ray Rivera ever surviving the streets, let alone building a successful recording career that has spanned 50-plus years. Hit with staggering illness, astonishing neglect and crushing homelessness before ever leaving his teens, Ray managed to not only survive, but prosper through his steadfast devotion to music and single-minded adherence to those four simple words: Pay it no mind. This is jazzman Ray Rivera's story of triumph in the face of poverty, racism and the forces of greed. Go back with him to where it all started on the streets of Spanish Harlem where the gutters were lined with yesterday's trash and tomorrow's dreams. Join him in some of the hottest nightclubs in New York City like the world-famous Tropicana where equatorial heat mixed with cool jazz nightly. Meet some of the craziest cats in the last half-century of jazz music like Charlie Parker and Babs Gonzales, and learn how one man with the love of song successfully sidestepped their often self-destructive trajectory. In Ray's Tune Ray Rivera candidly tells a local journalist how he did it all back then, and how he's still doing it today.

In this humerous and intellegent memoir, Falls reflects on over sixty years of writing with stories about all the greats from Jack Nicklaus and Michael Jordan, to Joe DiMaggio and more. Filmmakers' fascination with opera dates back to the silent era but it was not until the late 1980s that critical enquiries into the intersection of opera and cinema began to emerge. Jeongwon Joe focusses primarily on the role of opera as soundtrack by exploring the distinct effects opera produces in film, effects which differ from other types of soundtrack music, such as jazz or symphony. These effects are examined from three perspectives: peculiar qualities of the operatic voice; various properties commonly associated with opera, such as excess, otherness or death; and multifaceted tensions between opera and cinema - for instance, opera as live, embodied, high art and cinema as technologically mediated, popular entertainment. Joe argues that when opera excerpts are employed on soundtracks they tend to appear at critical moments of the film, usually associated with the protagonists, and the author explores why it is opera, not symphony or jazz, that accompanies poignant scenes like these. Joe's film analysis focuses on the time period of the post-1970s, which is distinguished by an increase of opera excerpts on soundtracks to blockbuster titles, the commercial recognition of which promoted the production of numerous opera soundtrack CDs in the following years. Joe incorporates an empirical methodology by examining primary sources such as production files, cue-sheets and unpublished interviews with film directors and composers to enhance the traditional hermeneutic approach. The films analysed in her book include Woody Allen’s Match Point, David Cronenberg’s M. Butterfly, and Wong Kar-wai’s 2046.
During the thirty-four year period from 1898 to 1932, more than fifty thousand Italian immigrants arrived at the port of Providence. The majority of them settled on Federal Hill, the three-hundred-acre land mass that stands high above Rhode Island's capital city. This remarkable photographic history of Federal Hill features images of the community from the late 1800s to the mid-1960s, chronicling the arrival of immigrants from many countries over the years. Federal Hill is a rich community in many ways. Its hardworking and tenacious settlers started out with a deep and abiding faith in God. Their numerous accomplishments are evidenced today in the many thriving family-owned businesses and stunning architectural achievements so prevalent in the downtown area. Many people from around the state enter Federal Hill through the welcoming pine-cone arch for seasonal festivals or a night on the town. The vitality and hospitality of this historic area are truly cherished by many in the modern era.
“One of the best baseball books in years”—a journey with Negro League legend Buck O’Neil by the New York Times–bestselling author of The Baseball 100 (Cleveland Plain Dealer). Winner of the Casey Award for Best Baseball Book of the Year When legendary Negro League player Buck O’Neil asked award-winning sports columnist Joe Posnanski how he fell in love with baseball, that simple question eventually led the pair on a cross-country quest to recapture the love that first drew them to the game. This book recounts their emotional quest to find the heart of America’s beloved sport that still beats despite the scandal-ridden, steroid-shooting, money-hungry athletes who currently seem to define the sport. At its heart is the story of 94-year-old Buck O’Neil—a man who truly played for the love of the game. After an impressive career in the Negro Baseball Leagues in which he earned two hitting titles and one championship, O’Neil made baseball history by becoming the first African-American coach in major league baseball. Posnanski writes about that love and the one thing that O’Neil cherishes almost as much as baseball: jazz. This heartwarming and insightful tour of the country is an endearing step back in time to the days when the crack of a bat and the smoky notes of a midnight jam session were the sounds that brought the most joy to a man’s heart. “Engaging and spirit-lifting . . . much like Mitch Albom’s Morrie.” —Sports Illustrated “You won’t read a better baseball book this year.” —Newsday “A moving elegy for both the Negro Leagues and one of the game’s biggest personalities.” —Entertainment Weekly “How good is [this] book? It’s right there with Robert Creamer’s Babe.” —Toronto Sun “Poignant, very funny, and ultimately inspiring.” —Dave Barry “Document[s] in loving detail the story of a man who figured out early how to live every day with joy.” —Boston Sunday Globe
ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION (1948) - Here is Joe DiMaggio’s inside story of baseball, an instructive and entertaining survey of the game written expressly for fan and player alike — the bleacher fan, the sand-lot player, the high school athlete, and anyone who has ever swung a bat or whooped it up for the home team. Never before in one volume has baseball been covered so thoroughly. Joe DiMaggio, idol of today’s baseball world, probes the arts of batting, base running, coaching, strategy, and play at each of the nine positions. Through his own experiences and those of a hundred other major leaguers, he tells of life in the Big Leagues, World Series play, anecdotes about old-time players such as Shanty Hogan and Casey Stengel and contemporary figures like Bill Dickey and Bob Feller. With the aid of sketches and photographs, DiMaggio explains in detail how Lou Gehrig learned to go far to his right for a ground ball; how a shortstop often relays the catcher’s signals to the outfield; how a batter protects a base runner; how a pitcher grips the ball for a sinker, a curve, and a knuckler. Read what old-time catcher Shanty Hogan remembers about life in the Eastern League. (“We called it the ‘Up and At ’em League’—up all night and at ’em all day.”). Or what colorful Casey Stengel said about barnstorming from town to town in automobiles. (“Never let a pitcher who lost a close game that afternoon be your driver that night.”) DiMaggio consulted many authorities in this study of the game. His advisory board of baseball experts included Frankie Frisch, former second baseman and manager of the St. Louis Cardinals; Bill Dickey, former catcher for the New York Yankees; Carl Hubbell, former New York Giant pitcher; Art Fletcher, New York Yankee coach, and Red Barber, Sports Director for C.B.S. Baseball for Everyone is a warm and revealing story of our favorite national pastime, written by the game’s most outstanding exponent, Joe DiMaggio. For sixteen years DiMaggio patrolled center field for the New York Yankees. Three times he was designated the American League’s most valuable player, and in 1947 he won the Sportsman-of-the-Year trophy awarded by Sports Magazine. Illustrated with 9 Halftones and 17 Line Drawings by Lenny Hollreiser

Corporate entrepreneurship involves new business creation within established companies, the strategic renewal of existing business, and, ultimately, the search for sustainable competitive advantage in an increasingly globalised economy. Yet it remains elusive for many firms. In a collaboration between a practitioner and academic, Joe J. Amberg and Sara L. McGaughey explore corporate entrepreneuring within a large conglomerate multinational enterprise: Siemens AG. In early 2009, following a prolonged period of business stagnation and a huge bribery scandal, Siemens’ top management identified a severe lack of entrepreneurship as a critical issue. The strengthening of ‘local entrepreneurship’ became a new priority in the strategic planning for 2010 to 2014. By examining three contrasting ventures in the Siemens business unit Fire Safety between 2008 and 2012, the authors identify key drivers and impediments that sustain inertia in corporate entrepreneuring within this global organisation. This study offers an insightful contribution to our growing – yet still fledgling – understanding of corporate entrepreneurship in global corporations, highlighting the importance of context, interdependencies between critical factors, and the false promise of universal best practice.
From America’s premier sportswriter, the definitive, #1 New York Times bestselling biography of Joe Paterno. Joe Posnanski’s biography of the late Penn State football coach Joe Paterno follows in the tradition of works by Richard Ben Cramer on Joe DiMaggio and David Maraniss on Vince Lombardi. Having gained unprecedented access to Paterno, as well as the coach’s personal notes and files, Posnanski spent the last two years of Paterno’s life covering the coach, on (and off) the field and through the scandal that ended Paterno’s legendary career. Joe Posnanski, who in 2012 was named the Best Sportswriter in America by the National Sportswriters and Sportscasters Hall of Fame, was with Paterno and his family as a horrific national scandal unfolded and Paterno was fired. Within three months, Paterno died of lung cancer, a tragic end to a life that was epic, influential, and operatic. Paterno is the fullest description we will ever have of the man’s character and career. In this honest and surprising portrait, Joe Posnanski brings new insight and understanding to one of the most controversial figures in America.

Why do fans live and die with their teams? For Yankee, Cowboy, and Laker fans the answer is fairly clear: the return on investment is relatively high. But why do people root so passionately for tragically inept teams like the Boston Red Sox, the Chicago Cubs, and the Philadelphia Phillies? Why do people organize their emotional lives around lackluster franchises such as the Cleveland Cavaliers, the San Diego Padres, and the Phoenix Suns, none of whom have ever won a single championship in their entire history? Is it pure tribalism? An attempt to maintain contact with one's vanished childhood? In True Believers, humorist and lifelong Philly fan Joe Queenan answers these and many other questions, shedding light on--and reveling in--the culture and psychology of his countless fellow fans.
Legendary New Yorker writer and editor Roger Angell is considered to be among the greatest baseball writers. He brings a fan's love, a fiction writer's eye, and an essayist's sensibility to the game. No other baseball writer has a through line quite like Angell's: born in 1920, he was an avid fan of the game by the Depression era, when he watched Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig hit home runs at Yankee Stadium. He began writing about baseball in 1962 and continued through the decades, lately blogging about baseball's postseasons. No Place I Would Rather Be tells the story of Angell's contribution to sportswriting, including his early short stories, pieces for the New Yorker, autobiographical essays, seven books, and the common threads that run through them. His work reflects rapidly changing mores as well as evolving forces on and off the field, reacting to a half century of cultural turmoil, shifts in trends and professional attitudes of ballplayers and executives, and a complex, discerning, and diverse audience. Baseball is both change and constancy, and Roger Angell is the preeminent essayist of that paradox. His writing encompasses fondness for the past, a sober reckoning of the present, and hope for the future of the game.

(Book). In the tradition of Nick Tosches, Tom Wolfe and Lester Bangs comes an epic and riveting history of rock and roll that reads like a novel. Sonic Cool presents the saga of rock and roll as the closest thing we have to genuine "myth" in the modern world, and it is the first book about rock to be written in the spirit of rock. Immense, fierce, opinionated and hilarious, Joe Harrington masterfully presents rock as a movement of near-religious proportions, against a backdrop of social factors and important events such as the invention of the guitar, the jukebox, LSD, the 12-inch phonograph record, the '70s recession, the Reagan Revolution, and the Internet. This is the history of rock as it's never been told, as the legend of a massive cultural movement, one that had meaning, but ultimately failed because it sold its soul. Radically egalitarian in its assessments towering figures such as Lennon, Dylan and Cobain stand along side lesser-known but equally influential artists like the MC5, the Misfits and Joy Division Sonic Cool is gripping reading for anyone who ever believed in the music. Includes a 16-page black-and-white photo insert. Joe S. Harrington began writing at the age of 10, an act that provoked a rejection slip from Mad magazine. He has written about music for the Boston Globe , Boston Phoenix , New York Press , Seattle Stranger , Lowell Sun , Wired , Reflex , Raygun , High Times , Seconds , Rollerderby and numerous fanzines. He is currently employed as an on-line jazz critic at Amazon, and lives in Portland, Maine. Softcover.
The Role of the CEO in Corporate Transformation is a narrative research study on how four successive CEOs influenced the transformation of their company over a thirty-year period. The book is intended for students of business leadership as well as for business leaders seeking to understand better the dynamics of leadership and corporate transformation. The book argues that what leaders do to lead and how they lead is significantly influenced by the context of the operating environment as well as by the dynamics of their interaction with key stakeholders. The thesis is that to understand the role of leaders in strategic change consider their responses to constraints and challenges and what enactments they engage in.

Everyone imagines top CEOs as larger-than-life figures who do things no one else could. But deep down, a good business leader is an everyman who combines vision and high energy with the ability to connect with and learn from all types of people. In The Power of Being Yourself, renowned business leader Joe Plumeri offers simple yet profound guidance on how to stay positive, motivate yourself and others, and achieve success in your life and work. Plumeri's Game Plan for Success features eight key principles, from Everyone Has the Same Plumbing, in which his fish-out-of-water experience as CEO and chairman of a London-based company reveals how cultural differences can be overcome as people everywhere respond to authenticity, to You Gotta Have Purpose!, which explores the transformative ingredient that leads to tangible progress. And because this book is meant to be revisited and consulted whenever you need fresh inspiration or practical advice, The Power of Being Yourself also features a final section -- Applying the Principles -- imparting further guidance and checklists. By sharing his own experiences--and candidly exploring high-stakes business decisions along with many personal triumphs and tragedies--Plumeri explains that the secret to success is found not in boardroom strategy or corporate philosophy, but rather in allowing passion, purpose, and true emotions to inform your approach and guide your relationships. His book is a timely wake-up call in a world where heartless electronic communication too often takes precedence over genuine connection. Plumeri reveals that if we can live in the moment and be honest and true in our emotions, the effect carries over into how we live all facets of our lives.
Through extensive interviews and archival research, Joe Clark has uncovered the engaging details of Australian baseball’s unique, and often turbulent, 125-year history, and for the first time the dynamic story of Australian baseball is told. Initially accepted only grudgingly in the late nineteenth century as an off-season substitute for cricket, baseball in Australia steadily rose in prominence. Starting with neighborhood games played between improvised teams, the sport grew to include state and national leagues and a spirited international competition. Both the shortcomings and the triumphs of Australian baseball are revealed in A History of Australian Baseball: Time and Game, from an ill-fated late-nineteenth-century baseball tour of America and the political firestorm surrounding the formation of the Australian Baseball League in the 1990s, to the amazing defeat of the powerhouse Cuban team in the Intercontinental Cup of 1999.
Joe Posnanski enters the colorful world of Harry Houdini and his legions of devoted fans to explore the illusionist’s impact on global culture—and why his legacy endures to this day. Nearly a century after Harry Houdini died on Halloween in 1926, he feels as modern and alive as ever. The name Houdini still leaps to mind whenever we witness a daring escape. The baby who frees herself from her crib? Houdini. The dog who vanishes and reappears in the neighbor’s garden? Houdini. Every generation produces new disciples of the magician, from household names in magic like David Copperfield and David Blaine to countless other followers whose lives have been transformed by the power of Houdini. In rural Pennsylvania, a thirteen-year-old girl finds the courage to leave a violent home after learning that Houdini ran away to join the circus; she eventually becomes the first female magician to saw a man in half on television. In Australia, an eight-year-old boy with a learning impediment feels worthless until he sees an old poster of Houdini advertising “Nothing on earth can hold Houdini prisoner,” and begins his path to becoming that nation’s most popular magician. In California, an actor and Vietnam War veteran finds purpose in his life by uncovering the secrets of his hero. But the unique phenomenon of Houdini was always more than his death-defying stunts or his ability to escape handcuffs and straitjackets. It is also about the power of imagination and self-invention. His incredible transformation from Ehrich Weiss, humble Hungarian immigrant and rabbi’s son, into the self-named Harry Houdini has won him a slice of immortality. No one has withstood the test of time quite like Houdini. Fueled by Posnanski’s personal obsession with the magician—and magic itself—The Life and Afterlife of Harry Houdini is a poignant odyssey of discovery, blending biography, memoir, and first-person reporting to trace Houdini’s metamorphosis into an iconic figure who has inspired millions.
Much has been written about the legendary flight of Apollo 11 and mankind’s first tentative steps into deep space. It’s often said that the world stopped, watching in awe as the crew of Apollo 11 completed their mission. It is true that in that moment, almost everyone had virtually gone to the moon as people around the world gazed in wonderment at the grainy black-and-white images of Neil Armstrong taking that first step onto the surface of another world. But that was a fleeting moment and just as quickly, the moment was gone– wars raged on, protestors filled the streets, and average Americans went back to their daily lives. Everyone’s Gone to the Moon is a week-by-week journey through July 1969, one of the most pivotal months in human history – in space and here on Earth. This unique book follows the crew of Apollo 11 and NASA as they prepare for the historic first lunar landing alongside the major global events buried beneath headlines covering the historic space mission. Interwoven with the story of Apollo 11 are the events on our home planet that made an equally important impact on who we were then and who we are today: the Life of Prince Charles was threatened by a terrorist attack in Wales; the storm dubbed the Ohio Fireworks Derecho ripped through the Midwest, killing dozens; the assassination of Kenyan Economic Minister Tom Myoba (of which Barack Obama Sr. was a key witness) undercut a nation just learning to stand on its own; Senator Ted Kennedy was involved in a mysterious accident in Chappaquiddick, Massachusetts; ARPANET, the first real “Internet” was unveiled; Monty Python was born; John Lennon and Paul McCartney released “Give Peace a Chance” during escalated Vietnam War tensions; Midnight Cowboy stunned the Academy Awards; and much more. Meanwhile, NASA was still scrambling. Everyone’s Gone to the Moon features little known behind-the-scenes stories of the moon landing like how NASA had to grapple with media, the technical issues that still plagued the lunar module, and how the prior crew of Apollo 10 suffered incredible itching from their spacesuits that needed correcting before Apollo 11 could even be launched. This deep dive into the Apollo 11 mission’s most crucial weeks and the little-known and rarely remembered events occurring simultaneously back on Earth gives a vivid new perspective to the month that launched humanity into the future. ,
