This book discusses the “special call” to ministry and describes how our calling is interconnected with the other key areas of life. God’s callings for our lives include a broad spectrum of areas. Our Creator, who “knits us together in our mother’s womb,” places within our hearts and minds our purpose for our being on earth, and out of that context calls us to serve the needs of His Kingdom—sometimes in specific ways. While not everyone is called to dedicate their careers to ministry, everyone is called to engage in the Lord’s work on some level and many times to multiple tasks in life. This book examines the wide range of those callings and focuses on the “special call” to ministry. This book answers many of the questions students have about the “special call” to ministry and is written to guide young people as they choose their career fields—especially in ministry. In working in higher education for over four decades, the author has observed many students struggle to determine which major they should take in college and decide whether they are called to the ministry. The second part of the book is dedicated to finding God’s will for our lives. Upon graduation, many ministry students seek to know which ministry opportunity they should take. However, there are other times when our calling comes directly from our Creator. God calls us and we know with conviction that He has called us. There are other times when our calling flows out of the situation we find ourselves in—and sometimes this is not of our own choosing. At other times our callings are connected to the choices that we make. For example, when we choose to get married, we take on the calling of serving our spouse. In all of life, God masterfully uses our circumstances to call us to His work.

It provided a passage to freedom along the underground railroad, and during the industrial age, it was a boundary between the Jim Crow South and the urban North. In the late 1800s, Southern evangelicals believed contemporary troubles—everything from poverty to political corruption to violence between African Americans and whites—sprang from the bottles of "demon rum" regularly consumed in the South. Though temperance quickly gained support in the antebellum North, Southerners cast a skeptical eye on the movement, because of its ties with antislavery efforts. Postwar evangelicals quickly realized they had to make temperance appealing to the South by transforming the Yankee moral reform movement into something compatible with southern values and culture. In Liquor in the Land of the Lost Cause: Southern White Evangelicals and the Prohibition Movement, Joe L. Coker examines the tactics and results of temperance reformers between 1880 and 1915. Though their denominations traditionally forbade the preaching of politics from the pulpit, an outgrowth of evangelical fervor led ministers and their congregations to sound the call for prohibition. Determined to save the South from the evils of alcohol, they played on southern cultural attitudes about politics, race, women, and honor to communicate their message. The evangelicals were successful in their approach, negotiating such political obstacles as public disapproval the church's role in politics and vehement opposition to prohibition voiced by Jefferson Davis. The evangelical community successfully convinced the public that cheap liquor in the hands of African American "beasts" and drunkard husbands posed a serious threat to white women. Eventually, the code of honor that depended upon alcohol-centered hospitality and camaraderie was redefined to favor those who lived as Christians and supported the prohibition movement. Liquor in the Land of the Lost Cause is the first comprehensive survey of temperance in the South. By tailoring the prohibition message to the unique context of the American South, southern evangelicals transformed the region into a hotbed of temperance activity, leading the national prohibition movement.

Some of the time Mama taught school across the county and only was home only on the weekends. So my older brother Winston and my younger brother Michael and I did the farm work. We raised food to eat and to trade at the local store for things we could not raise. We took care of the animals, built fences, cut wood to heat the house, milked the cows and all the other chores. Even though we were young boys, we were farmers. Mama and Daddy depended on us. It may be hard to understand today what our farm life was like in the 1940s, but we all worked very hard to provide for our family, it was our way of life. When I was eight, I had to have surgery on my leg for osteomylitis, a bone disease. After a long time in the hospital I went back to the farm, but I was on crutches and could not do the farm work with my brothers. But guess what Mama and Daddy had a plan. They asked me to be the family cook. So in 1945 I became the full time cook. I was so happy. I had always loved to watch Mama cook but now it was my job. I would get up early in the morning and help build fi res in the fireplace and in the little kitchen stove, then I would make home made biscuits and cook bacon and sausage and eggs for the family. I was the full-time cook. I enjoyed cooking so much and my brothers and Mama and Daddy acted like they really enjoyed the food. Maybe they were just hungry. the Little Boy Cook is a collection of good old county recipes and memories from the past and recipes from family and friends.

Life is a story, and we all have our own special one to live. Some of us are in the early chapters, struggling to figure out the plot, while others are mired in the middle with too many obstacles and unclear dialogue. Still others are contemplating their grand, final act. You, like me started out somewhere, with your own special location, culture and passions. Your supporting cast; family, friends, neighbors, teachers, mentors, colleagues, and employers, even someone you may have casually met in passing influenced your thoughts, values and decisions. The result of these influences lead you to where you are right now, holding this book, reading these words, at exactly this moment. While our stories are peppered with our own individuality, surprisingly, they are not that unique.
