For those who want to build a fighting labor movement, there are many questions to answer. How to relate to the union establishment which often does not want to fight? Whether to work in the rank and file of unions or staff jobs? How much to prioritize broader class demands versus shop floor struggle? How to relate to foundation-funded worker centers and alternative union efforts? And most critically, how can we revive militancy and union power in the face of corporate power and a legal system set up against us? Class struggle unionism is the belief that our union struggle exists within a larger struggle between an exploiting billionaire class and the working class which actually produces the goods and services in society. Class struggle unionism looks at the employment transaction as inherently exploitative. While workers create all wealth in society, the outcome of the wage employment transaction is to separate workers from that wealth and create the billionaire class. From that simple proposition flows a powerful and radical form of unionism. Historically, class struggle unionists placed their workplace fights squarely within this larger fight between workers and the owning class. Viewing unionism in this way produces a particular type of unionism which both fights for broader class issues but is also rooted in workplace-based militancy. Drawing on years of labor activism and study of labor tradition Joe Burns outlines the key set of ideas common to class struggle unionism and shows how these ideas can create a more militant, democtractic and fighting labor movement.

A history of 9 Group, Royal Air Force Fighter Command, formed specifically to protect Liverpool and Manchester during the darkest hours of WWII. In the early years of World War II, two of Britain’s most important industrial cities, Liverpool and Manchester, were woefully unprotected from enemy bombing raids. Once the capitulation of France had occurred after Dunkirk, the Luftwaffe was able to base its vast bomber fleet at forward airfields that brought these strategic targets within their range. The effect was catastrophic and the two cities and surrounding industrial centers bore the brunt of the Nazi airborne blitz. It was clear that more anti-aircraft guns and fighter aircraft were desperately required to stop the slaughter of the population and vital industries. Thus was conceived 9 Group of the Royal Air Force, charged with the air defense of the entire region. This book relates how the Group was formed and the immense difficulties involved—due to shortages of suitable aircraft, guns and operational infrastructure. Fought mostly at night during a period when night-fighter tactics were in their infancy and inexperienced aircrew were having to fly over difficult mountainous terrain and in appalling weather conditions resulting in a high casualty rate. Eventually things improved and the Squadrons within 9 Group started to bring down significant numbers of raiding bombers whether they approached from the East or took advantage of neutral Ireland’s street lights to guide them via the Irish Sea to their intended targets.

Joe's Story, Bodine The story about this novel started in Dallas when Sandee Mac did a past life regression on me. It seems that I rode with the Quantrell Raiders. My name was Harve Bodine. Some time after that reading when my wife (Marta) and I were driving through New Mexico we stopped at the St. James Hotel in Cimarron. to get a cup of coffee and a sweet roll. We had heard they were as big as a cow pie. When I walked into the hotel I had the strong feeling of deja vu. I felt like I had been there before. It turns out that 26 men had died in that hotel in the 1800's. It was full of entities. Something started me writing these stories and they seemed to have a life of their own. I sit down and start a chapter after working all day and at 11:00 I'm still writing, it is kinda habit forming. You know where, are they going today, what are they up to. Things happen in the story that I had no idea that was the way it was going. It writes itself. A lot of the area in the stories I knew about. The 4th episode takes place about 20 years later. Robert (Bob) McKusick liked my stories so well he told me of his past life. Seems he was a train robber around 1880. He actually found a Robert McKusick in history that was a train robber in that time and place as he remembered it. He sent me all the history on it and I wrote the "Arizona is Hot" story about that history. A lot of it is fact-it was taken from the known history of train robberies. I just made it fit my story. And Bob (or Robert) was in it. Most of the characters in the stories are taken from people I have known, their character is imbedded in the story. I try to show real emotion that people have in a certain situation. Some times while writing, I get tears in my eyes. I put a lot of feeling in the stories. I hope you all enjoy reading them as much as I enjoyed writing them.-Joe Smith

Ground squirrels, roadrunners, toads, were once numerous in the wild, but are rarely seen now. All of these people and things make the study of history a real adventure and fun reading.
