This book addresses an intriguing question: are our decisions rational? It explains seemingly irrational human decision-making behavior by taking into account our limited ability to process information. It also shows with several examples that optimization under granularity restriction leads to observed human decision-making. Drawing on the Nobel-prize-winning studies by Kahneman and Tversky, researchers have found many examples of seemingly irrational decisions: e.g., we overestimate the probability of rare events. Our explanation is that since human abilities to process information are limited, we operate not with the exact values of relevant quantities, but with “granules” that contain these values. We show that optimization under such granularity indeed leads to observed human behavior. In particular, for the first time, we explain the mysterious empirical dependence of betting odds on actual probabilities. This book can be recommended to all students interested in human decision-making, to researchers whose work involves human decisions, and to practitioners who design and employ systems involving human decision-making —so that they can better utilize our ability to make decisions under uncertainty.

This is the story of one boy’s journey from an ordinary childhood in a European middle-class family into an alien world of terror and persecution where fear and violence reigned. Millions had to perish before Germany was defeated and the Continent could return to sanity. The Nazis' rise to power had transformed occupied Europe into a hostile environment where life for Jews had become a living hell. Suddenly, old relationships had been swept aside as neighbours and friends had suddenly become enemies and would-be persecutors. Survival now depended on learning new skills and sharpening newly acquired instincts. The margin between freedom and incarceration was often minute. Under such a brutally repressive regime life became dependent on quick thinking and adjustment to every new situation. Living on the razor’s edge those instincts soon become second nature, and with it new, hitherto unsuspected abilities to cope. With familiarity and increasing self-confidence it was inevitable that some bravado could also creep in. How else could such escapades as earning money in the epicenter of the Nazi war machine – a German Army HQ in occupied Budapest be explained? . Also described are the realities of life under continuous bombardment, from the air and by artillery, in a city laid waste and under siege where one was continually in danger, hungry and cold. To alleviate that hunger it became necessary to find food from unusual sources such as cutting flesh from army horses killed in the shelling and drinking melted snow. Everything had its uses and was recycled: even shoe polish could be used as a substitute for candles for lighting up a dark cellar in a ruined city where electricity, gas and water supplies as well as all the amenities of modern life were but a distant memory. The siege of Budapest ended with liberation by the Red Army and the realization of the terrible cost in human terms – especially that of Jews – of the Nazi regime. Starting a new life in England and a return to normalcy, concentrating on integration and education; preparing for a worthwhile career in a free and happy environment bring the story full circle. It shows that trauma need not necessarily be injurious but can also have a positive effect that leads to a greater appreciation of life and acts as a stimulant for achievement. Service in the British army, immigration to Israel and serving in the Israeli army as well as creating a family and a career conclude the narrative. Originally this memoir was intended for my children, but as it took shape I felt it could be of interest to the general reader who may wish to look at this cataclysmic era as seen through the eyes of a child.

Grothendieck’s beautiful theory of schemes permeates modern algebraic geometry and underlies its applications to number theory, physics, and applied mathematics. This simple account of that theory emphasizes and explains the universal geometric concepts behind the definitions. In the book, concepts are illustrated with fundamental examples, and explicit calculations show how the constructions of scheme theory are carried out in practice.
From the earliest days of measure theory, invariant measures have held the interests of geometers and analysts alike, with the Haar measure playing an especially delightful role. The aim of this book is to present invariant measures on topological groups, progressing from special cases to the more general. Presenting existence proofs in special cases, such as compact metrizable groups, highlights how the added assumptions give insight into just what the Haar measure is like; tools from different aspects of analysis and/or combinatorics demonstrate the diverse views afforded the subject. After presenting the compact case, applications indicate how these tools can find use. The generalisation to locally compact groups is then presented and applied to show relations between metric and measure theoretic invariance. Steinlage's approach to the general problem of homogeneous action in the locally compact setting shows how Banach's approach and that of Cartan and Weil can be unified with good effect. Finally, the situation of a nonlocally compact Polish group is discussed briefly with the surprisingly unsettling consequences indicated. The book is accessible to graduate and advanced undergraduate students who have been exposed to a basic course in real variables, although the authors do review the development of the Lebesgue measure. It will be a stimulating reference for students and professors who use the Haar measure in their studies and research.
MALAYA 16th. June 1948. Early in the morning, 3 murders of Rubber Planters took place. All within the area of Taiping Perak North Malaya. The names of the Planters were: - Mr. Arthur Walker. Chin Peng had been trained and fought alongside the British Special Operations Executive Force 136. During the Japanese Occupation of Malaya from 1942 until 1945. Chin Peng’s objective was, to create a Communist Dictatorship in Malaya, after the cessation of hostilities. Then take over from the British Government in Malaya, The Malaya Communist Party, began to cause unrest creating strikes and acts of murder amongst the law-abiding Malayan people, whose population was mainly of Chinese origin. In February 1947. Under a Treaty arranged by the British Government. The Federated and Unfederated States of Malaya became one. Much against the Malayan Communist Party’s wishes. Retaliating, they creating more havoc and unrest amongst the civilians, until finally decided to. ‘Take up Arms’ against the British Government. The murders of the three Planters, had the British High Commissioner Sir. Edward Gent forced to take action. Initiated a State of Emergency in Perak, quickly followed throughout other States. Chin Peng ‘Declared War’ against the British. Subsequently, the atrocities spread throughout Malaya. The Civil Police were unable to control the speeding violence and mayhem. Necessitating, the existing British and Gurkha Troops to take control. Nevertheless, the Communist had taken their fight into the jungles of Malaya. Where for the next 12 years, a Bloody War took place. It was called ‘THE EMERGENCY’ by the British Government, due to the possible Insurance claims from both the Rubber Plantation and Tin Mines Owners. It cost the lives of 1,818. Commonwealth Forces. & 1,026 Federation of Malaya Police. Over the following 12 years, it is estimated that in excess of 22,000, lost their lives consisting of, Commonwealth Forces of the three Service’s, Federation of Malaya Police. Civilians, including the Chinese Communist Terrorist. Chin Peng survived, escaped with the remains of his beaten Army, numbering less than 400 across the Malay border into Thailand to remain an exile.

The book's CD-ROM contains all the source code and examples from the book, plus a 90-day trial version of BEA WebLogic Platform, which includes WebLogic Workshop. Foreword Web services have attracted much attention recently as the next "big thing" in computing technology. Vendors of all shapes and sizes have announced their support for Web services technologies, and every month a new Web services conference is popping up somewhere on the globe. With all this hype and attention, sometimes itAs difficult to really discover what Web services are, where they fit in your company, what the business case is, and how you can actually get started taking advantage of this technology. BEA has been working with customers to answer many of these questions, and provide solutions that enable companies to easily construct Web services that meet their needs today. Contrary to the common conception of Web services as a consumer-focused technology, Web services may have the greatest potential as a technology inside enterprises as a new way of tying disparate applications together using standards-based technologies. To make Web services really work in the enterprise, however, itAs essential that they meet core enterprise requirements: Web services applications have to exist in a constantly changing IT environment where different applications are built and modified by different people on different schedules. They must accommodate everything from modern J2EE-based applications, to legacy systems, to applications at business partners. They must be able to handle rich and complex information and transmit it between internal and external applications. They must easily interact with other applications to leverage existing investments. They must be robust, reliable, and they must perform. Perhaps most important of all, they have to be easy to build. For Web services to flourish within an organization, all developers will need to be able to build Web services that meet these requirements. "BEA WebLogic Workshop Kick Start" introduces you to BEAAs new WebLogic Workshop product, a development tool and runtime framework that makes it easy to build powerful Web services that take advantage of the robust, enterprise features of the WebLogic J2EE application server. WebLogic Workshop provides a graphical tool that makes it easy to visualize, develop, and test Web service applications and visual controls that dramatically simplify access to existing resources like databases, packaged applications, Enterprise Java Beans, and other Web services. The Workshop framework provides out-of-the-box support for building Web services that are loosely coupled so that the internal implementation details of an application can be cleanly separated from the "public contract" that a Web service offers to other applications. This makes Workshop Web services flexible in the face of a constantly changing IT environment. Workshop also provides built-in support for asynchronous messaging so that Web service applications can carry on rich, two-way conversations with their clients and accommodate interaction with legacy systems and human users. Finally, Workshop supports easy manipulation of coarse-grained messages so that rich documents can be handled without resorting to tedious XML DOM programming. All of these capabilities can be accessed in a simple, declarative fashion that enables all developers not just J2EE experts to get started building Web services today. Even if you are new to the Java programming language, or have never built a J2EE application before, I think youAll be surprised how easy it is to get started with Workshop. Working inside the WebLogic Workshop environment, you can focus on the procedural business code that is important to getting your applications built and leave all of the details of Web service and J2EE plumbing to the application framework. BEA WebLogic Workshop Kick Start will give you an introduction to Web services in general, and teach you the few Java and J2EE concepts youAll need to know along the way. Rich with examples, this book illustrates the power of Web services, and will help you realize the value they can bring to your company. --Carl Sjogreen, Product Manager, WebLogic Workshop, BEA Systems, Inc

In 1912, R. A. S. Macalister published reports on his PEF excavations at Tell Gezer in central Israel, including notice of having traced more than 1,400 meters (almost a full mile) of defense walls around the site. Now, a century later, a detailed reassessment of these fortifications is provided in the publication of Gezer VII: The Middle Bronze and Later Fortifications in Fields II, IV, and VIII, edited by Joe D. Seger and James W. Hardin. This volume features work at Gezer sponsored by Hebrew Union College and Harvard University between 1968 and 1974, reporting on excavations at Macalister’s “Southern Gate” (Field IV) and along his “Inner” and “Outer” wall systems both on the southern (Field II) and northern (Field VIII) flanks of the site. These excavations produced much new data, enabling a confident dating of the Southern Gate complex and the Inner Wall system to the latter part of the Middle Bronze period (1700–1500 B.C.E.) and of the Outer Wall to the Late Bronze II and subsequent Hellenistic eras. Among a rich array of cultural remains, intramural occupation of the Middle Bronze Age yielded a gold jewelry hoard and early evidence of alphabetic writing.

Snipers, zombies, secret agents, and even distant relatives seem all bent on one purpose: to separate Hugo from her friends, her family, even her own people group; but most importantly, they seem bent on separating her from the Traditions that her people have given their lives for. But why? No "Plan B" has Hugo wondering "why" throughout the whole book. Why do snipers keep shooting at her and her best friend John? Why does John's dad seem bent on his own secret mission? Why does John's neighbor seem so mean to her? And, most importantly, why are the Traditions of her people so important?! Can anyone answer these questions? Or is Hugo destined for a life of confusion and abandonment-away from all that she knows and hold so dear?
