The Life and Times of I. Garland Penn is the first biography of a man who was a major contributor to the study of Afro-American journalism, progress in education and social uplift of the Black community in the era 1880-1930. Penn was instrumental in the founding and financial support of many colleges and universities in America, among which are the following: Bethune/Cookman, Meharry Medical College and Clark University. He brought together Black Americans for many historic meetings and conventions. One of the most unique meetings was The Negro Young People's Congress, a yearly gathering of Black youth and their adult supporters from all across America in the early years of the 20th century. As a journalist, I. Garland Penn authored The Afro-American Press and Its Editors which to this day is a source authority in research in this area. Penn was editor of The Laboring Man in his early adult years in Lynchburg, Virginia. The Afro-American Press and Its Editors surveys the work of his predecessors and contemporaries in journalism. Because Dr. Penn tended to assume supportive background roles, he is not as well known today as many of his contemporaries who have become household names in Black history. He worked with such well-known people as Frederick Douglass, Ida B. Wells and Booker T. Washington. It is the goal of this biography to finally give this great man his just recognition.

This present chapter describes the anatomical and neurophysiological components of healthy adult swallowing and presbyphagia and the major consequences that swallowing disorders (dysphagia) may have if left untreated. The main neurogenic conditions and diseases leading to dysphagia are also introduced, as well as the major diagnostic and interventional approaches used by swallowing specialists to help patients with dysphagia. The role of the multidisciplinary team is emphasized and screening questions and guidelines are provided to help the neurologist and other professionals provide dysphagic patients with the best swallowing care.

In the current model of health dispensation in South Africa there are two major paradigms, the spirit-inspired tradition of izangoma sinyanga and biomedicine. These operate at best in parallel, but more often than not are at odds with one another. This book, based on the author's personal experience as a practitioner of traditional African medicine, considers the effects of the absence of spirit in biomedicine on collaborative relationships. Given the unprecedented challenge of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the country, the author suggests that more cooperation is vital. Taking a critical look at the role of anthropology in this endeavor, she proposes the development of a "language of spirit" by means of which the spirit-inspired aetiology of izangoma sinyanga may be made comprehensible to academic scientists and applicable to medical interventions. The author discusses white izangoma in the context of current debates on healing and hybridity and insists that there exists a powerful role for izangoma in the realm of societal healing. Above all, the book constitutes a start in what the author hopes will develop into an ongoing intellectual conversation between traditional African healing, academe, and biomedicine in South Africa.

The book also shows that ideas about adultery and domestic violence evolved in the eighteenth century, influenced by new models of masculinity and femininity.
