Prophecy said that when the lords came down from the mountains, there would be strife and unrest in the world. Lord Darak, after sixteen years, was about to meet his grown son whom he had left as a baby with the mountain dwarves to raise. All the while, he has been sitting atop the mountain, guarding his son from the evil mage Zandrax and Queen Adrianna. King Halvard, knowing there was unrest in the world, sent out spies to find out what was going on. As Lord Darak and Daiuis travel from place to place, they seemed to have a knack gathering up allies: Dariuss dwarven companion, Flagg; the moody Prince Kalan of the elves and his brothers, Thon and Holin; the nimble spy called Silk; and a questionable lad named Fel. And they all go to see the king. What tales do they have to tell King Halvard?
Zandrax had found himself a cave to hide in, safe from dragon detection where he can practice his new magicmagic that dragons cannot detect. What does he plan on doing with it? Only the Gods know. Charidan is the High King; his father is dead. His entire mission in life is to place castles in the new lands that are opening up and seeing that kings are placed in them. Since he is busy in the Holy of Holies atop the Pelingre castle roof, he brings in his son, Bragan, to rule the kingdom. Bragan finds a unique way to control the noisy crowds that must see him to settle disputes and anything else that comes up. No matter where problems creep up, his three unclesDarton, Waldon, and Jovianalong with Adric and Leander, always turn up for him to settle it. Dragonriders are still being killed by hired assassins, hired by Zandrax. Drastic measures must be used to get rid of those assassins. However, it is important to get the twenty-two carefully selected overkings and queens in place in the new kingdoms. And they need colonists, and it has to be done without assassins. This is the new heritage of all the people in the Lands of Remgeldon. Zandrax has to be defeated. How? Can Lord Dariuss twins do it? And what will be the drastic results?
The Lands of Remgeldon For three years, Zandrax had been cooped up at Dakes. He had to see and hear what was going on. In that time, he heard Halvards army was about to fall upon Dakes. He would be discovered. When returning to Dakes, he set about preparing to take the ship out, planning to leave Adrianna at Dakes and leaving those twin brats behind. But she was an adept spy and learned of his preparation and wasnt about to be left behind. Zandrax also heard about the many dragons, nearly a thousand. They had only been breeding for eight years. He needed to go somewhere where there were no dragons. He had also heard that people were speculating about other lands all around them. There was the Isle of the Dragons. Why not other islands? When Dakes was taken by the army, they learned that Zandrax had taken a ship out of Dakes and was headed east. Now they had to find out where he went. The search was begun anew. This time Dragonriders led the way across the oceans to new lands. Not only was there a massive search for Zandrax underway but a massive exploration started. Search and exploration became one. Major leaders Thon and Holin Silver were in lands named Keloria and Eberlee; Bragan Pelingre and Sladan Silver went to the land they named Heartland; Waldon Graystone opened an island off his coast of Drude then went on to see if there was more land. Others took over exploration led by Kalan Silver, the First Dragon Lord. The hunt for Zandrax was begun.
The High King decided to call their world Remgeldon. North Remgeldon would be called the Kingdom of Thanos. South Remgeldon would henceforth be known as the Kingdom of Sarlon. Fourteen other kingdoms would be named over the next few years. Exploration became a big event. A council was chosen to decide who would be the Dragon Lord Overkings of those fourteen kingdoms. Named as council members were five Dragon Lords led by Lord Kalan, Leander, Adric, Darton, Waldon, Jovian, and Bragan, who was expected to one day become a Dragon Lord. No one wanted to think about Zandrax. He had departed Eberlee on the heels of his demon Karmac being caught and devoured by dragons. No one knew where he had gone or where to search. It was thought he might head to Newland. The search was on again, and Zandrax seemed always ahead of them and gone. Dragon riders wonder what disastrous mischief the evil mage would dream up next. Zandrax still had two demons he had dredged up from the DeepGrogan, the shape-changer and the siren, Whoron. They discovered the mischief when dragon riders were killed. Killing a rider killed a dragon. How could dragon riders stop Zandrax from hiring disgruntled southern soldiers to kill riders?

The war at Thanos is over, but Princess Dariella has been captured. Can Lord Darius and two dragons find her in time? Because of the lightning strike at Thanos, set off by Zandrax, half of King Halvards army has been killed. Half the population left at Thanos has been killed. Where did Zandrax run to after that dastardly blast? King Raymon of Heun is having serious trouble with his half-brother Gerald, who is his advisor. Should Raymon send his wife-beating brother away, dissolve his marriage, or is there an alternative? Spies are sent out to determine how much of the southern army is still in the northern realm. Can Slade and Janatar quietly spy out the southern territory and stay out of trouble? And in these troubled times, can Jandal and Felyana find happiness? Can Kalan and Altina really be in love? And what of Lord Darius and Dariella? Will they or wont they fall in love? How can only eighteen dragons help the war effort? King Halvard has the Seven Gods on his side, plus Lord Darak and his son, Lord Darius. And now the dragons. Zandrax has called up three demons from the Deep: Grogan, the shape-shifter; Karmac, the shade or shadow; and Whoron, the siren enticer. Will he too want a dragon? And where would he get one?
Its war. Zandrax wants to rule the world from King Halvards throne within the Holy City of Thanos. Seventy thousand men are marching toward Thanos, with a supply train five miles long. They can only march as fast as the train can travel. However, King Halvard only has less than twenty thousand in his army. How can they win? But what is the prince of thieves and Lady Felayna doing? Is that love or war? And how about Prince Kalan and Princess Altina? Neither Lord Darak nor King Halvard seem able to put the pairs together no matter how hard they try. Then the three mages from Wylche manage to dump the broken and battered body of Prince Qarvon into the hall at the Holy Castle at Thanos, reminding everyone that there really is a war going on. But it will take a miracle to heal thepPrinces body and hope he will live to walk again. All the while, Zandraxs army is marching up the Kings Highway to Thanos, as snipers from Thanos ride down to snipe at the edges of that army, hoping to reduce it to a manageable number that more closely matches the number of the High Kings army. Its war! With surprising goings on around the city of Thanos. What is King Halvard thinking of? Destroying his own city? For what purpose?
Isle of the Dragons Where once there was only one golden dragon, now there are twelve golden queen dragons. Only half are old enough to mate, but over five years they created a covey of nearly two hundred dragons. That was enough to have a dozen squadron leaders. The war at Thanos is over, thank all the Gods, but the war at Wylche is heating up. Dragons, taller than a horse, with sharp teeth and breathing fire, are used to scare the southern army men into running. But skirmishes happen; men are killed, injured, and laid up for a time. There is a prophecy come down from the Seven Gods that Zandrax will do something drastic to cause the Wylche Royal Castle to crumble, raise a mountain, and the Gods will use it to create a new Royal Castle atop the mountain for the new Dragon Lord. Prince Leander fears his father will die and that new Dragon Lord will be him. How will Zandrax pull down a castle the Seven Gods installed eons ago? Close to the end of the war King Philipi disappeared. Where? Royal Castle? Will Zandrax appear there? Can Philipi shoot him full of his tiny poison darts from his mini crossbow? Will he have the strength? And what will Zandrax do next? And will his flying horse (Grogan, the shape-changing demon) carry him? Deliver him safely? Or dump him? Will Zandrax be able to carry out his evil diabolical plot?

Vivid, personal, upbeat &– makes you feel her happiness' - Maggie GeeA lithic love letter Joanne Bourne has been in awe of flint as long as she can remember. It was all around her where she grew up in Kent: used for garden walls, to edge drives and weight dustbin lids, as well as to build pubs, churches, Roman villas and castles. For centuries it was the only building stone available. It is also magical. Made from the remains of plankton and sea sponges, it is second only in hardness to a diamond and can be used to make fire. Part of human development for three million years, it was used as a weapon to hunt and in war, and hung as protection against thunderbolts and fairies. In a deeply personal love letter to this extraordinary 'biogenic' rock, Bourne traces its geological, architectural and social history and invites us to roam with her in search of it on her beloved North Downs. Fusing science, poetry, history and a profound love of landscape, this is her heartfelt, thoroughly persuasive tribute to the stone she calls 'an art project of the great divine'.
The law can be scary, the law can be lenient or cruel...and, at times, the law can just be downright, unbelievably wacky. Be assured: every statute in this entertaining and illustrated compendium is absolutely real. They come from down the block and around the world, and they prevent us from no-nos like eating pies baked by grandmothers in non-certified kitchens; accidentally getting a glimpse of a sweaty naked person through a window; and being subjected postmortem to the tacky taste of any loved one who would dare put plastic flowers on our graves instead of fresh ones. The jaw-dropping regulations cover animals (no licking hallucinogenic toads in Missouri); transportation (do not run out of gas on Germany's super-speedy autobahns); public decorum (kissing and hugging in public forbidden in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia--but in India, it will just get you fined); house rules (no flushing after 10PM in a certain Swiss apartment building), food (only certain pizzas in Italy can be called Margheritas); and much, much more. And the best place to get a job? Portugal--because you can't be fired. One thing that's absolutely allowed: laughing hard and long at these laws!
If you try to identify the basic qualities of a child "most likely to succeed" as an adult, what words might first come to mind? Independent? Likable? Creative? Disciplined? According to Dr. Joanne Joseph, the essence of a productive and healthy personality is a positive and secure self-image and a solid set of resilient attitudes and behaviors. The Resilient Child: Preparing Today's Youth for Tomorrow's World successfully integrates the latest information available about healthy cognitive development, self-esteem, and resilience to give parents and teachers practical suggestions for nurturing these qualities in children and adolescents. Dr. Joseph, an esteemed psychologist and child education consultant, skillfully shows how stories, television, nutrition, exercise, parental discipline style, and the child's individual characteristics each play a comprehensive role in the development of a child's self-esteem and resilience. With the author's clearly outlined strategies, parents and educators can guide children to be socially skillful, responsible, disciplined, good problem-solvers, and effective managers of the change and adversity inherent in today's world. Elaborating beyond what others have identified as the elements of a productive personality, Dr. Joseph uses a series of inspiring anecdotes and documented research to discuss the following: what experts do and do not know about the development of self-esteem; how parents and teachers can actively contribute to the natural development of a child's self-esteem; how to promote resilience in children through happy and difficult times; the kinds of characteristics that differentiate children from each other; how to liberate a child's inner strengths to build self-esteem and resilience; how literature and the media can teach resilient and productive values and behaviors; styles of parental discipline and their influence on the development of the child; and more.

The Heirs of Remgeldon The southern half of northern Remgeldon, Thanos to Dakes, is to be searched for Lord Dariuss missing twins. At the same time, some of the provinces of southern Remgeldon, Pitzar, Drude, and Hogue are to be searched for the missing twins, and Dragon Lord Castles are founded and established by Darton, Waldon, and Adric these three years of 1559 through 1561. All old castles and all tall buildings that have deep basements are to be searched by the armies of General Mallan in the north and General Darvan and General Leland in the south. It naturally leads to some trouble, and it seems that Darton, Waldon, and Adric sure know how to find trouble. But will Zandrax and Adrianna be found? Will the twins be found? Can they be saved from whatever Zandrax, an evil mage, has planned for them? What of the black-haired elves? Darton comes upon a bunch of them. He thought they were all supposedly killed during the war to take over Thanos? Then there is Waldons old enemy, Casterson. What is he cooking up to make trouble for Waldon? And Waldon naturally has to call in his younger brother, Jovian, and his nephew, Bragan, to help but with what? Nothing but trouble awaits those four southern kings and Bragan and the dragon riders in that southern kingdom. Dragon riders are, after all, trained fighters.

A second-year doctoral student from a Midwestern family, Frye is twenty-three when she marries a German professor ten years her senior. Previously sheltered, Frye seeks new vistas but instead finds herself confined by the demands of her life: wife to a volatile and domineering husband, mother of two young daughters, and aspiring academic. With her dissertation completed, she finally realizes that the only way to wrest her identity and freedom from her husband’s grip is by leaving him; she boards a bus with her two young children to embark on a new life. In Biting the Moon, Frye powerfully recounts her struggle for independence and a successful career while remaining devoted to her daughters. Despite the many promises of the women’s movement—liberation from domestic work and the ability to influence social policy—she wrestles with the complex, often ambivalent, relationship between feminism and motherhood. Interwoven with literary references from Charlotte Brontë to Virginia Woolf to Tillie Olsen, Biting the Moon invites the reader along on Frye’s quest for self-expression and a life beyond the shadows of others. This deeply felt, courageous portrait of a woman’s life will be intimately familiar to an older generation of mothers and an inspiration to a younger generation.

An ill wind blows through the groves of academe as English professor Karen Pelletier becomes embroiled in her second homicide investigation--in this sequel to the Agatha Award-nominated "Quieter Than Sleep. As the case progresses, Professor Pelletier--intrepid researcher, defender of women's rights, and soldier on the front lines of the fight for academic progress--finds herself doing battle not only with an unknown killer but also with her own department chair; being threatened by the president of the board of trustees; and falling victim to the aristocratic charms of her college president. Any one of these peccadilloes, she realizes, might easily spell academic death to an untenured member of the faculty. And, in an ironic twist on the old professorial adage, it begins to look as if Karen's determination to publish (the biography of a woman whose writing her colleagues look upon as trash) might actually cause her to perish--professionally, and perhaps in the decidedly non-metaphoric sense as well. Joanne Dobson's first novel, "Quieter Than Sleep, introduced feisty young Professor Pelletier, the political battle at prestigious Enfield College, and a cast of memorable characters from outrageous academics to local police. With "The Northbury Papers, Dobson provides an even more intricate mystery, and a sputtering cauldron of academic warfare that will delight old fans and win her a host of new ones, too.
This is a book of fairies which celebrates these elusive creatures, with poetry and tales of their exploits, and their entrancing, fragile charm in evocative pictures.
