Over the last three decades, inflation targeting (IT) has become the most popular monetary policy framework among larger economies. At the same time, its constituting features leave room for different interpretations, translating into various central banks’ institutional set-ups. Against this backdrop, this book investigates the importance of institutional arrangements for policy outcomes. In particular, the book answers the question of whether there are significant differences in IT central banks’ institutional set-ups, and—if yes—whether they influence the ability of monetary authorities to meet their policy goals. The book examines around 70 aspects related to independence, accountability and transparency of 42 IT central banks over the last 30 years. Based on the analysis, it can be concluded that the quality of the institutional set-ups materially affects monetary policy effectiveness. In fact, a visible improvement of institutional arrangements resulting from pursuing an inflation targeting strategy can be treated as its lasting contribution to central banking. Thus, despite the recent critique of the framework, its prospects continue to be rather favourable. Overall, for the advocates of inflation targeting, the findings of the book can be seen as identifying the sources of IT strengths, while for IT opponents, they may be viewed as indicating which elements of IT institutional set-ups should be kept even if the need to replace this strategy with another regime will, indeed, result in a change. Given the role monetary policy plays within the economy, such knowledge may have significant implications. Therefore, the book will be relevant for different audiences, including scholars and researchers of monetary economics and monetary policy, and will be essential reading for central banks already pursuing an IT strategy or those preparing to adopt one. Importantly, the book includes supplementary indices of proposed institutional arrangements that assess a range of aspects related to IT central bank’s independence, accountability, and transparency. Readers thus have access to the author’s full database, which covers individual indices for all monetary authorities investigated across the given period of analysis.

Field of Schemes is a play-by-play account of how the drive for new sports stadiums and arenas drains $2 billion a year from public treasuries for the sake of private profit. While the millionaires who own sports franchises have seen the value of their assets soar under this scheme, taxpayers, urban residents, and sports fans have all come out losers, forced to pay both higher taxes and higher ticket prices for seats that, thanks to the layers of luxury seating that typify new stadiums, usually offer a worse view of the action. The stories in Field of Schemes, from Baltimore to Cleveland and Minneapolis to Seattle and dozens of places in between, tell of the sports-team owners who use their money and their political muscle to get their way, and of the stories of spirited local groups?like Detroit's Tiger Stadium Fan Club and Boston's Save Fenway Park!?that have fought to save the games we love and the public dollars our cities need. This revised and expanded edition features the first comprehensive reporting on the recent stadium battles in Washington DC, New York City, and Boston as well as updates on how cities have fared with the first wave of new stadiums built in recent years.
This book is a monument, not to Joanna Bradshaw who is the subject of Jody, but to America. Jody's is truly an American story. With the gift of extraordinary talent, the will to make the most of herself, and the willingness to pay her dues, she rose to the very top of her profession against staggering odds. She fulfilled Abraham Lincoln's broad vision of America as a land where anyone could rise as far as talent and hard work would take them. Jody came a long way from a kid with a summer job on Long Beach Island, New Jersey, serving hamburgers at Burke's Bar-B-Q to break through the glass ceiling and become an icon in American retailing. As Macy's first female corporate VP, followed by a progression of more senior level executive positions that included the presidency of two leading home furnishings chains, Jody broke down the traditional barriers to her gender. She proved that a woman's rightful place in retailing includes the very highest executive levels. Of course, there was a price. Experience the lean years, the heartbreak of two divorces, and the scramble to be there when loved ones were passing. But also revel in the rich stories of her nearly endless travels across the globe in search of the most exciting, fashion-forward, trend-setting goods. And meet some of America's greatest retailing legends, giants with whom she rubbed shoulders on a daily basis. So come share her story the quiet joys, the vaulting triumphs, the naked failures and the wonderful memories visited upon this unique personality. It is all here, unvarnished. You will never forget Jody. Like the Little Engine that Could, that promised, I think I can I think I can I think I can she did! Read this book. It will enrich your life.
