Donald Bartlett, a quirky New York literature professor who has long been at odds with the academic life, cannot seem to forget his need to locate the muse who abandoned him years earlier. Belinda Cavanaugh, a maverick beautician from Key West, persists in believing that she may be that muse. Meanwhile Carole Bartlett, Donald’s new wife, is distracted by secrets concerning her children.

Ginny, Sharon, Terri, and Bev are all senior honor students in high school in a rural community in upstate New York. They hardly ever cut school, but on the day that they do—driving south to New Jersey—they find themselves in the wrong spot at the wrong time as an unemployed loner goes on a shooting spree. Those who return home face the nearly impossible task of making sense not only of the act, but of their own lives.
ACOSTA is a story about the entire Acosta family, but especially about Oscar Acosta, the feisty pitching coach who first turned around the Chicago Cubs and then the Texas Rangers followed by a minors Yankees team, before dying in an auto accident in the Dominican at age 49. The parents of Oscar and his sister Yolanda were immigrants who came to the U.S. from Mexico to work on other people's ranches in southeastern New Mexico. That Oscar, who everyone assumed would follow in his father's footsteps, should be discovered in high school and make his way up the ranks in professional baseball is a fascinating story in itself. But in addition to a central thread about Oscar, there is also the story of his father, who, after years of poverty, succumbed to a temptation that would have shattered a less loving family, and Yolanda, who chose to forgive the perpetrator of a heinous crime in order to avoid a lifetime of negativity and despair.
The Arroways appear to be a normal enough family. Liz and Pete’s marriage has held up through time and circumstance, and their children, although not always perfectly mannered, seem to be clever and robust. But upon closer inspection this is not the case at all. Liz, a housewife with a keen nose for environmental issues, happens to be flirting with madness. Jake, the eldest child, is flirting with a reckless reinterpretation of the past. And Pete, a ghost-writer who is striving to come to terms with his own masculinity, is flirting with a woman at work.

A career-spanning monograph of the multimedia pioneer Joan Jonas (1936- ) that covers more than 40 years of performances, films, videos, installations, texts and video sculptures
Joan Jonas: They Come to Us without a Word' documents Jonas's project for the United States Pavilion at the 56th Venice Biennale, an expansive installation that incrporates multiple components, included projected videos, drawings, and objects. Each section of the pavilion represents a particular creature (bees, fish), object (mirror), force (wind), or place (homeroom). Recited fragments of ghost stories sourced from the oral tradition of Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, form a continuous narrative linking one room to the next. As Jonas says, 'We are haunted, the rooms are haunted.' Designed with Jonas's close collaboration, this fully illustrated book features an extensive collection of images selected by the artist, including stills, drawings, and photographs, that not only document this ambitious and important new work but form an integral part of the presentation and experience of 'They Come to Us without a Word'. Also included are Jonas's poetic notes on her process and major new texts from ann Reynolds and Marina Warner as well as an interview with the artist by Ingrid Schaffner." -- Publisher.
