Joseph W. Young, Jr., was acknowledged as one of the five or six major city builders in boomtime Florida. From practically nothing in 1920 he created Hollywood By-the-Sea with an elegant Beaux Arts plan of circles and lakes, calling it a "City Beautiful," an ideal first propounded by Daniel Burnham of Chicago. Young had a rare talent for publicity and a knack for making and spending millions--supported by an immense personal charm that is still remembered decades after his death. This first full biography of Young covers his start as city builder in turn-of-the-century California where new cities blossomed and were ballyhooed, his move to Indianapolis, home of Carl Fisher who developed Miami Beach, his creation of Hollywood and Port Everglades, and his move to his Adirondack resort, ending with his dreams to expand Hollywood, fulfilled after his early death.

Marshall is a soldier in the army, and Joan is a seaman apprentice in the navy. Both are in uniform when they meet on a Greyhound Bus. They exchanged addresses and the two of them write one another for a year; it is their only form of communication. They never speak nor meet again during their year of writing. Their letters, as far as Joan realizes, are simply ways of trading positive inputs regarding military life. However, the soldier has other thoughts regarding their correspondences. To Marshall, the contents of the seaman apprentice’s written word shows that she has a caring and kind quality. Somehow, he has fallen for her. But how can he let the lady know that he is hopelessly in love with her? Afterall, he had only met her in person for one hour on a Greyhound Bus ride. But the soldier does confess to the navy apprentice in his next letter; and she admits her love for him as well. After his tour in Vietnam they married. This story tells of their initial meeting and all of the challenges they go through to secure their place in the world. With their love for children, relatives, friends and even strangers, they never fail to show a dedication for helping those in need. It is a heart-warming chronicle that will display how the couple’s love help navigate them through their marriage and many unforeseen obstacles. This book is dedicated to the author’s husband, Marshall Lewis, and all of his descendants as well.

It makes specific suggestions regarding how to build classroom activities, integrate technological tools, and assess students’ learning. This is a unique book. After the birth of my second son some 11 years ago, I was painfully torn by the timing of my reentry to work-my wish to return to a prestigious and stimulating position as chief psychologist of a large agency, or my equally powerful wish to enjoy fully my beautiful new son's infancy, undivided and untorn. At the time I had a dream that my body was cut in half at the waist-my head leaned to the books neatly contained on the library shelves; my belly went to the crib, all sweet-smelling and soft. Not having had the opportunity to be "un divided" with my first son (now 17 years old), I chose to resign my agency position and stay home as long as I wished and then develop my private practice. It was a decision that at the time entailed much loss-cerebral, collegial, social, pres tigious-and generated some self-doubt, but in retrospect it is not regretted and was perhaps wise. This son's infancy will always be remembered as a time in which I experienced mothering with ease and grace.
