This book is intended to amuse and interest you. You’ll meet many characters from history and see how they might have behaved in situations you’re sure to know about. There are also murderers and victims – some real and some fictitious; there’s ‘Who Dunnits’ and barbaric actions by ordinary people; there are unreal situations faced by very real characters. There are 20 different stories for you to choose and all as fascinating as each other. Was Benedict Arnold a traitor or a hero? Did William Shakespeare really desert his wife for a better life in London? How did Abraham Lincoln earn the name ‘Honest Abe? Was Rabbie Burns as enamoured of the lassies as he was said to be? (I think you’ll find he was.) The above are just a few examples to grip your interest – but there’s much, much more to keep you glued until the end of each story. This study analyses the biblical personage Hannah as a literary entity, to illustrate her uniquely significant place in the traditions of Israel as the mother of Samuel and thus of the reform of the priesthood, the creation of the monarchy, and the teacher of all Israel. There are three interweaving themes: first, the literary issue of the barren mother type scene; second, the theological theme of divine guidance and human initiative; and third, the perspectives of early biblical interpretation. The study develops around four works: the Hannah narrative in 1 Samuel 1-2, Pseudo-Philo's Biblical Antiquities, the Targum of the Prophets, and the Infancy Narrative in Luke 1-2.

The exhibition "Assyria to Iberia at the Dawn of the Classical Age" (The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 2014) offered a comprehensive overview of art and cultural exchange in an era of vast imperial and mercantile expansion. The twenty-seven essays in this volume are based on the symposium and lectures that took place in conjunction with the exhibition.
