Medieval scholar Emery Truitt takes his first position in the arid highlands of the American west. Distant peaks of the Sawtooth Range on the eastern horizon stand as a barrier to his hopes for a post in the ivied halls of New England. Discouraged, he nonetheless forges ahead through this academic wasteland where officious cowboys manage the college, the faculty is lackluster, and the students unimaginative. College student Kristina Day, daughter of board chair Christian Day and sole heir to the Hawke agricultural empire, admires the monkish professor who has opened her eyes to a vast world beyond the confines of her rural homeland. Engaged to a distant relative in the Hawke clan, Kristi represents all the hope her family holds for future generations. Increasingly at odds with her fathers vision, she tests an untrodden path by applying for the position of Professor Truitts assistant. As soon as Truitt denies Kristi the post, his own goals are interrupted by a personal tragedy rising from his past. Hidden secrets unleash a vortex of ills around him that rob him of name and standing. To regain his honor, he must seek the answers to a lost past and only then is he able to recognize the gifts that Kristi has to offer.
How has theatre represented the rural? And how does a re-viewing of theatre of and in the rural help to build and complicate our sense of place? Theatre & the Rural explores the different ways in which theatre has performed the rural from the medieval to the contemporary, and examines the changing relationships between place, performance and audience when theatre is staged in rural communities. The book argues that theatre has a key role to play in both producing and potentially changing understandings of the rural, challenging dominant views of the relationships between city and country which can affect the political, social and cultural lives of the nation.
Emily Talcott has a sister to fire off into the season and a father whose gambling debts are threatening to bring the whole family to bankruptcy, and is secretly the author of the immensely popular books of poetry supposedly written by the French Marquis de la Cour. Damon, Lord Wentworth’s arrival in her life creates another complication—a very dangerous one, for she quickly realizes why the devilishly handsome viscount has gained the name of “Demon Wentworth.” He has a reputation for liking games of cards with high stakes and women with low morals. Now her father owes him for gambling losses. If only her newest book could earn enough to pay them off . . . Everything gets complicated when an imposter claims to be the French poet. How can Emily denounce him? What if he takes her profits? What if his plan to marry her sister under false pretenses succeeds? Her only ally, though she cannot tell him the truth of her deception, is Damon. Like her, he is interested in halting the false marquis. He will not explain why, halting her questions with heated kisses. Suddenly Emily begins to realize how silly her poetry is, because it cannot compare with truly falling in love. Can she trust Damon to help her save her sister and not break her own heart?
They always win the halftime. Members of the Fightin' Texas Aggie Band, embodying the spirit, camaraderie, and excellence of the school they represent, have marched and played proudly for one hundred years. Here is the story of the music, the precision, the tradition of that exceptional band. Illustrated with 121 black and white photographs and eight pages of color pictures of bands and band members past and present, this lively history pays tribute to the bandmasters and musicians who have made the organization the pulse of the spirit of Aggieland. Organized around the tenure of its founder, Joseph Holick, and its directors--Richard J. Dunn, E. V. Adams, Joe T. Haney, and Ray E. Toler, the men who became "The Colonel" to generations of Aggie Band members--the book marches through a century of tradition and excellence. From the birth of the band, through the development of its marching style and its stirring, distinctive music, to its most recent triumphs of precision maneuvers and military music, the story is as bold and bright as the band itself. An appendix lists all of the band's seven thousand-plus present and former members. This is a story of the determination, discipline, and enduring pride that rests deep in the heart of those young men and women who have been tough enough, proud enough, and good enough to be "The Noble Men of Kyle.
Details the properties of 3D acquisition geometries and shows how they naturally lead to the 3D symmetric sampling approach to 3D survey design. In The Jackson Heights Project, author Jo Anne Meadows pours out her heart about her struggles, trauma, and unforgettable experiences of her life and the life of her late dad. Throughout this memoir, Jo Anne shares what happened to her and her family as a result of living with an alcoholic and abusive dad. Her family was torn apart due to her dads illness and by certain people who were envious of him and a negative influence in his life. Jo Anne decided to write, and she titled her book The Jackson Heights Project because this is where she lived and grew up with her mom, dad, and seven siblings during the good and bad times of their lives. She regrets the life her family had after her dad started drinking and physically abusing her mom who did not deserve this type of treatment. Jo Annes dad was a hard worker, however, and was well known as a great gospel singer in the group the Valley Spiritual Singers. Jo Anne believes her dad would have had a great future with his gospel career if he had not started drinking. One day while performing at a gig, one of the greatest gospel groups of all-time the Mighty Clouds of Joy heard him sing and asked him to come join their group. He declined and gave up on everything he worked so hard for as his life fell into a downward spiral. In The Jackson Heights Project, readers will discover how this family managed to deal with the negative effects of alcoholism and what their lives were like after their various experiences of the devastation as an innocent family. Jo Anne currently resides in Los Angeles, California, with a family of her own and is still healing from her past. Sharing her story in the pages of this book has been very therapeutic. She dedicates this book to her late dad, Mr. Joseph Joe Meadows Sr. (April 1, 1936November 4, 1983).

In 1967, when Jo Ivester was ten years old, her father transplanted his young family from a suburb of Boston to a small town in the heart of the Mississippi cotton fields, where he became the medical director of a clinic that served the poor population for miles around. But ultimately it was not Ivester’s father but her mother—a stay-at-home mother of four who became a high school English teacher when the family moved to the South—who made the most enduring mark on the town. In The Outskirts of Hope, Ivester uses journals left by her mother, as well as writings of her own, to paint a vivid, moving, and inspiring portrait of her family’s experiences living and working in an all-black town during the height of the civil rights movement.

Few people are aware of the injustices working women in the USA suffer due to antiquated laws and attitudes. They are often cheated in regard to Social Security benefits and get unfair treatment in divorce or child support actions because they work. Childcare subsidies have arbitrary cutoffs. Other issues include the 'pink tax,' caregiver status and the price we pay in stress. An analysis of childcare subsidies and welfare law reveal startling contrasts between the low- or even higher-wage working woman and the woman who receives Welfare. The way health care is financed is especially baffling: working women overpay, by being overcharged by insurers or, often, by the IRS. This book gives a history of the rise of the working woman in this country, the problems she faces and what we can do to help. This book is the culmination of over forty years in the workplace, many of them while raising two children and working toward a degree. Recalling 'the way it was' before laws were put in place which now protect us (or try to) from sexual harassment and mistreatment on the job, the author offers personal experiences as well as meticulous documentation to make her points, and she also offers a consideration of various career paths that may be most manageable for women with children.
The book represents a paradigm shift from the traditional static model of investigation of oxidative biology to the dynamic model of vascular oxidative stress. The investigation of vascular biology and cardiovascular medicine is made possible by the use of tissue engineering, nanotechnology and stem cell research. This is the first textbook to target a wide readership from academia to industry and government agencies in the field of cardiovascular diseases.

The Trump administration violated the rights of migrant children who fled brutal violence in the Northern Triangle of Central America. Their rights are human rights. This book explores the administration's policies and practices of family separation at the U.S. southern border and its confinement of migrant children that, in some cases, experts describe as torture. Specific connections are made between harmful actions on the part of government officials and agencies, and provisions that protect against them in The Convention on the Rights of the Child and four other UN conventions. Awareness of the violations and the safeguards afforded to children may help preserve children's human rights. The book also examines efforts of humanitarian organizations, courts, and legislators to reclaim and defend migrant children's rights. The author's research includes information from international and national government documents, news reports, and interviews and stories that resulted from networking with advocates in both Arizona and Mexico. The young asylum seekers were called "criminals" and "not-innocent" by the President. However, his narrative is contradicted by vignettes that describe children's own experiences and beliefs and by photographs of them taken by advocates in Arizona and by the author in shelters in Mexico where families await asylum.
Engaged, passionate, and consistently entertaining, An Informal History of the Hugos is a book about the renowned science fiction award for the many who enjoyed Jo Walton's previous collection of writing from Tor.com, the Locus Award-winning What Makes This Book So Great. The Hugo Awards, named after pioneer science-fiction publisher Hugo Gernsback, and voted on by members of the World Science Fiction Society, have been presented since 1953. They are widely considered the most prestigious awards in science fiction. Between 2010 and 2013, Jo Walton wrote a series of posts for Tor.com, surveying the Hugo finalists and winners from the award's inception up to the year 2000. Her contention was that each year's full set of finalists generally tells a meaningful story about the state of science fiction at that time. Walton's cheerfully opinionated and vastly well-informed posts provoked valuable conversation among the field's historians. Now these posts, lightly revised, have been gathered into this book, along with a small selection of the comments posted by SF luminaries such as Rich Horton, Gardner Dozois, and David G. Hartwell. "A remarkable guided tour through the field—a kind of nonfiction companion to Among Others. It's very good. It's great."—New York Times bestselling author Cory Doctorow, Boing Boing on What Makes This Book So Great At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

The Meaning of Success: Insights from Women at Cambridge makes a compelling case for a more inclusive definition of success. It argues that in order to recognise, reward and realise the talents of both women and men, a more meaningful definition of success is needed. Practical ways of achieving this are explored through interviews with female role models at the University of Cambridge. First-person stories bring alive the achievements and challenges women experience in their working lives, and the effect gender has on careers. The book stimulates a debate about how to bring about a more inclusive working environment.
Improvisational comedy has exploded over the last several decades. But the short, game-based version of improv—as seen on shows like Whose Line Is It Anyway?—is of little help when it comes to successfully pulling off long-form improvisation. Long-form provides exciting new challenges and opportunities for improvisational performers that go beyond comedy. It demands an expanded skill set, careful preparation, and genuine courage. Drawing on author Jo McGinley’s more than thirty years of experience onstage and in the classroom, Going Long provides a clear and practical framework for both beginning and experienced improvisers. It includes mental exercises specifically developed for long-form work, best practices for rehearsals and collaboration, techniques for connecting with the audience, tips on crafting stories within specific genres, and principles for making in-the-moment decisions that support an overarching narrative.
This study explores more recent adaptations published in the last decade whereby women—either authors or their characters—talk back to Shakespeare in a variety of new ways. "Talking back to Shakespeare", a term common in intertextual discourse, is not a new phenomenon, particularly in literature. For centuries, women writers—novelists, playwrights, and poets—have responded to Shakespeare with inventive and often transgressive retellings of his work. Thus far, feminist scholarship has examined creative responses to Shakespeare by women writers through the late twentieth century. This book brings together the "then" of Shakespeare with the "now" of contemporary literature by examining how many of his plays have cultural currency in the present day. Adoption and surrogate childrearing; gender fluidity; global pandemics; imprisonment and criminal justice; the intersection of misogyny and racism—these are all pressing social and political concerns, but they are also issues that are central to Shakespeare’s plays and the early modern period. By approaching material with a fresh interdisciplinary perspective, Women Talk Back to Shakespeare is an excellent tool for both scholars and students concerned with adaptation, women and gender, and intertextuality of Shakespeare’s plays.
