Meritocracy today involves the idea that whatever your social position at birth, society ought to offer enough opportunity and mobility for ‘talent’ to combine with ‘effort’ in order to ‘rise to the top’. This idea is one of the most prevalent social and cultural tropes of our time, as palpable in the speeches of politicians as in popular culture. In this book Jo Littler argues that meritocracy is the key cultural means of legitimation for contemporary neoliberal culture – and that whilst it promises opportunity, it in fact creates new forms of social division. Against Meritocracy is split into two parts. Part I explores the genealogies of meritocracy within social theory, political discourse and working cultures. It traces the dramatic U-turn in meritocracy’s meaning, from socialist slur to a contemporary ideal of how a society should be organised. Part II uses a series of case studies to analyse the cultural pull of popular ‘parables of progress’, from reality TV to the super-rich and celebrity CEOs, from social media controversies to the rise of the ‘mumpreneur’. Paying special attention to the role of gender, ‘race’ and class, this book provides new conceptualisations of the meaning of meritocracy in contemporary culture and society.
This book offers an interdisciplinary approach to examining contemporary radical consumption, analyzing its possibilities and problems, moralities, methods of mediation and its connections to wider cultural formations of production and politics." "Jo Littler argues that we require a more expansive vocabulary and need to open up new approaches of enquiry in order to understand the area's many contradictions, strengths and weaknesses. Drawing on a number of contemporary theories, terms and debates in media and cultural studies, she uses a range of specific case studies to bring theory to life." "Radical Consumption is important reading for cultural, media and sociology students." --Book Jacket.

Over a decade has passed since the publication of the First Edition; we have yet to understand the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis and there is still no cure. A wide range of developments in techniques, materials, imaging and understanding of biological processes justify this rewrite. Above all, the experience of many colleagues worldwide with commitments to a particular anatomical or technical area has led to a more balanced and refined approach to the problems of rheumatoid surgery. It has also highlighted areas where we need radically new solutions. The two additional authors, apart from their relative youth, bring expertise in their respective fields: Steve Copeland, on the shoulder and Jo Edwards on the mechanisms of tissue damage and the rationale of medical measures. We are conscious of the importance of communication between orthopaedic colleagues worldwide and the need to use a language shared with rheumatologists and histopathologists. We consider it is for the surgeon to know more of this disease than the narrow confines of surgical technique. We are doctors with a special interest in rheumatoid arthritis and we aim to maintain the broader view rather than be confined by the limitations of over specialisation. Although joint replacement is at present a major weapon for the relief of suffering we appreciate that it is an unphysiological procedure and there are other directions for progress.
Focusing on practice placement programs in the United Kingdom, this useful guide provides the resources needed to support students who are struggling with or failing their placements. Drawing on her own experiences training practice educators, Jo Finch offers advice to social work practitioners, placement supervisors, practice educators, mentors, and university tutors alike. Chapters examine the signs and symptoms of a struggling student, the emotional impact and emotional processes of decision making, and strategies for working effectively with students and academic institutions. Reflection exercises also enable readers to bring these methods to their own work. Together, Finch's ideas and insights will further knowledge and engender confidence for any teachers, assessors, and supervisors working in programs with a practice learning component.

This book is about funny stories we do as children. Some kids do things that just don't make sense to parents. But we do it anyways! Stories dictate not who we are but they are always a part of us and to the people we know.
In Ellie's deepest, darkest moments, she wanted to know "What did I do wrong? Why didn't she want me? Why couldn't I have been born to you?" In my deepest, darkest moments, I had cried out to God, "What did I do wrong? Why won't you send us a baby? Why would you make me want to be a mother and then not give me a child?" Looking at Ellie was like looking at my own pain through a two-way mirror. The holes in her heart matched my own. She wanted a mom. I wanted a baby. And God had answered. Sallie and her husband, Seth, have been struggling to start their family for years. Doctors, inconclusive testing, and the pain of empty loving arms were taking a toll on their lives and their marriage. When Sallie has an encounter with God, she gives the reins of her life to Him. That's when the Lord sends them down a winding, complicated path toward adoption. Ellie is a ten-year-old girl who has never known anything but violence and pain. Nothing has ever been permanent in her young life, and she has become withdrawn and aggressive. She is tossed through foster care from home to home until one day, her social worker tells her she is going to be adopted. Their worlds collide, and in an instant, everything is changed. But how can Seth and Sallie possibly help an angry and out-of-control Ellie overcome the terrors of her past? Love alone will not be enough. There is only one solution--the light always drives out the darkness.
Subversion, Power and Hierarchy in Organisations and Society: Carnivalesque Leadership explores a leadership strategy that dates back centuries but has become so normalised that it can be invisible as a strategy. Extrapolating Mikhail Bakhtin’s ideas on carnival and its potential for communal freedom and subversive challenge to existing hierarchies, this book identifies components of the carnivalesque, considers why and how they have impact and then maps the application of Carnivalesque Leadership to a series of case studies. Exploratory in nature, these diverse case studies focus on the historic evolution of carnivals in Trinidad and Notting Hill, the safety-valve mechanisms ubiquitous in the education sector, the standardisation of control and release within the corporate sector and the dynamic tension between protest, challenge and fun in Pride events. Readers will benefit from an increased awareness of a strategised Carnivalesque Leadership model and a greater understanding of the potential not only for the safety-valve release of pressure in society and in organisations but also for longer-term change through exposure to alternatives to the official norm.

Jeremy Ivester is a transgender man. Thirty years ago, his parents welcomed him into the world as what they thought was their daughter. As a child, he preferred the toys and games our society views as masculine. He kept his hair short and wore boys’ clothing. They called him a tomboy. That’s what he called himself. By high school, when he showed no interest in flirting, his parents thought he might be lesbian. At twenty, he wondered if he was asexual. At twenty-three, he surgically removed his breasts. A year later, he began taking the hormones that would lower his voice and give him a beard—and he announced his new name and pronouns. Never a Girl, Always a Boy is Jeremy’s journey from childhood through coming out as transgender and eventually emerging as an advocate for the transgender community. This is not only Jeremy’s story but also that of his family, told from multiple perspectives—those of the siblings who struggled to understand the brother they once saw as a sister, and of the parents who ultimately joined him in the battle against discrimination. This is a story of acceptance in a world not quite ready to accept.

We are in the midst of a global crisis of care. How do we get out of it? The Care Manifesto puts care at the heart of the debates of our current crisis: from intimate care--childcare, healthcare, elder care--to care for the natural world. We live in a world where carelessness reigns, but it does not have to be this way. The Care Manifesto puts forth a vision for a truly caring world. The authors want to reimagine the role of care in our everyday lives, making it the organising principle in every dimension and at every scale of life. We are all dependent on each other, and only by nurturing these interdependencies can we cultivate a world in which each and every one of us can not only live but thrive. The Care Manifesto demands that we must put care at the heart of the state and the economy. A caring government must promote collective joy, not the satisfaction of individual desire. This means the transformation of how we organise work through co-operatives, localism and nationalisation. It proposes the expansion of our understanding of kinship for a more 'promiscuous care'. It calls for caring places through the reclamation of public space, to make a more convivial city. It sets out an agenda for the environment, most urgent of all, putting care at the centre of our relationship to the natural world.

But actually thousands of dancers, purserettes, doctors, stewardesses, captains and conductresses have taken to the waves on everything from floating palaces to battered windjammers. Their daring story is barely known, even by today’s seawomen. From before the 1750s, women fancying an oceangoing life had either to disguise themselves as cabin ‘boys’ or acquire a co-operative husband with a ship attached. Early pioneers faced superstition and discrimination in the briny ‘monasteries’. Today women captain cruise ships as big as towns and work at the highest level in the global maritime industry. This comprehensive exploration looks at the Merchant Navy, comparing it to the Royal Navy in which Wrens only began sailing in 1991.
