This book is a dramatic and highly readable account of the life of a political activist in Czechoslovakia during the period 1952-1990. It covers many aspects of Czechoslovakian culture and history, including orphanages, prisons, protests, strikes, the Soviet invasion of 1968, and the 1989 'Velvet Revolution.' The authors also believe that the telling of Wolf's life is tremendously important in today's society; it demonstrates how the actions of ordinary people can make a difference. While Wolf was being held in jail, thousands of letters piled on the prison warden's desk in Czechoslovakia. It provided Wolf with the feeling that someone cared, and he derived strength from that fact. The letters also showed the prison officials, politicians, and others that their cruel actions were being watched. In the end, the story indicated that when people band together for a good cause, their concerted efforts can make this a better world.

Non-scalar variational problems appear in different fields. In geometry, for in stance, we encounter the basic problems of harmonic maps between Riemannian manifolds and of minimal immersions; related questions appear in physics, for example in the classical theory of a-models. Non linear elasticity is another example in continuum mechanics, while Oseen-Frank theory of liquid crystals and Ginzburg-Landau theory of superconductivity require to treat variational problems in order to model quite complicated phenomena. Typically one is interested in finding energy minimizing representatives in homology or homotopy classes of maps, minimizers with prescribed topological singularities, topological charges, stable deformations i. e. minimizers in classes of diffeomorphisms or extremal fields. In the last two or three decades there has been growing interest, knowledge, and understanding of the general theory for this kind of problems, often referred to as geometric variational problems. Due to the lack of a regularity theory in the non scalar case, in contrast to the scalar one - or in other words to the occurrence of singularities in vector valued minimizers, often related with concentration phenomena for the energy density - and because of the particular relevance of those singularities for the problem being considered the question of singling out a weak formulation, or completely understanding the significance of various weak formulations becames non trivial.

They spend time together in Trickster’s world. The first occasion was while Josef was comatose, and later when he is dreaming. In Trickster’s world, Josef and Trickster play together and have fun. Trickster tells Josef that he will come to Joseph’s waking world if he is ever needed. Josef doesn’t believe that’s possible, yet it happens. When Josef encounters danger while hunting for lost treasure in the woods, Trickster comes to his rescue in his giant’s form. Later, Josef and his friends are hiking to a hidden hot spring high in the wooded hills above Marienbad. It is there where Josef once again needs Trickster’s help. Will Trickster: The Being from My Mind turn out to be real?

At first glance, the archaeological record of Moravia has been quite visible in the Anglophone world. Bits and pieces of this record have repeatedly made headlines in both the general and the specialized press for close to a century. First, it was the discovery of a mass grave of some 21 individuals found at the Upper Paleolithic site of Pfedmosti, then the oldest evidence for ceramic technology reported in the first quarter of this century in the Illustrated London News. Later on, the site of Petfkovice, dating some 23,000 B. P. , produced evidence for the oldest burning of coal for fuel, while more recently the New York Times informed us that imprints in clay at Pavlov I attest to the oldest evidence for the making and use of textiles. This list of cultural innovations documented from Moravia can be expanded to include the use of ground stone technology to make stone pendants (e. g. , at Pfedmosti), oflarge ground-stone rings whose use remains enigmatic (e. g. , at Bmo II, Predmosti, and Pavlov I)-but which if found in more recent contexts would pass as querns-as well as of possible needles (again at Predmosti).

Increasing interest in the immunology of mucosal surfaces is obvious from the number of publications in scientific journals and from the frequency of national and international symposia devoted to this subject. Particularly encouraging are the large numbers of young investigators who have chosen to work in this area of theoretical immunology with profound practical implications. The two volumes represented here are the result of an International Congress Of Mucosal Immunology held at the Niagara Falls Convention Center and the Niagara Falls Hilton on June 29 - July 3, 1986. This satellite meeting of the International Congress of Immunology placed emphasis on all aspects of the Mucosal Immune System. This included the regulation of differentiation of mucosal lymphocytes, mucosa-associated lymphoreticular tissue and lymphocyte homing, the immunology of mucosa associated tissues and glands, effector functions in mucosal immunity, and the effects of environmental antigens on the immune response, all of which are included in Volume I. The second volume has emphasized studies of the immune response and effector functions, IgA biosynthesis and transport, IgA proteases and effector functions, developmental aspects and immunodeficiency, the immunopathology of IgA and mucosal immunoprophylaxis. A total of 218 papers are included in these two volumes and a comparison to past meetings held at four to five year intervals indicates the explosive growth of mucosal immunology.

The murder of fourteen-year-old Willie Nickel caused an uproar in southern Wyoming and the public demanded finding the culprit and appropriate punishment. About seven months later Tom Horn, a cattle detective hired by the big ranchers, was arrested and charged with this crime. His lawyer, John W. Lacey and a solitary reporter from Denver, are convinced that Horn is innocent and they try their best to prove that the whole trial is actually a conspiracy by small ranchers, mostly rustlers, to silence Horn once for all. However, in spite of the fact that defense refuted most of the prosecution’s arguments and testimonies, the jury found him guilty and recommended the capital punishment by hanging. viii The danger is that the result so obtained may be an experimental artifact. Another approach is to examine in as much detail as possible the principles underlying the operation of a new device. This may not lead to a new sensor immediately, but those developed along these lines tend to be more reliable. The accent in this book is therefore on the principles behind the operation ("the trade") rather than on a description of applications ("the tricks of the trade") of individual sensors. In this respect it is written for students at both graduate and upper undergraduate levels. Approximately one semester's worth of material is presented. The book may also be useful for scientists and engineers involved in the development of new types of chemical sensors or for those who discover that "somebody else's sensor just does not work as it should" and wish to know why. The book is divided into five sections dealing with the four principal modes of transduction: thermal, mass, electrochemical, and optical, as well as a general introduction common to the four types. I have included five appendixes, which are intended as a quick reference for readers who may not possess sufficient background in some areas covered in the main text. I have run out of symbols in both the Latin and Greek alphabets. In order to avoid confusion and ambiguity I have confined the use of a set of symbols to each chapter and provided glossaries at the end of each chapter.

Available online: https://pub.norden.org/temanord2022-542/ Combustion of biomass and incineration of solid waste and sewage sludge are important parts of the energy production and waste management infrastructure in most of the Nordic countries, but they also produce substantial quantities of residual waste in terms of bottom ash, fly ash and flue gas cleaning residues which contain potentially harmful substances in various amounts. Preferably, the ashes and residues should be treated and utilised as part of the Circular Economy. The project provides an overview of the utilisation options, including environmental and treatment requirements, and of the associated technical and regulatory frameworks and practical conditions of utilisation. Compliance of combinations of treatments and applications of ashes and residues with Best Available Techniques (BAT) has been assessed, and seven Nordic BAT candidates have been proposed and described in detail.

This volume constitutes the proceedings of the 4th International Conference on Database and Expert Systems Applications (DEXA), held in Prague, Czech Republic, in September 1993.
