In The Price and Promise of Specialness, Jin Li Lim revises narratives on the overseas Chinese and the People’s Republic of China by analysing the Communist approach to ‘overseas Chinese affairs’ in New China’s first decade as a function of a larger political economy. Jin Li Lim shows how the party-state centred its approach towards the overseas Chinese on a perception of their financial utility and thus sought to offer them a special identity and place in New China, so as to unlock their riches. Yet, this contradicted the quest for socialist transformation, and as its early pragmatism fell away, the radicalising party-state abandoned its promises to the overseas Chinese, who were left to pay the price for their difference.
Advances in space-borne remote sensing have significantly changed the mankind viewpoint how to observe our own Earth planet. Great amount of remote sensing data and images presents new resources to quantitatively describe and monitor our Earth environment, atmosphere, oceanic and land surfaces. In remote sensing, electromagnetic (EM) scattering, emission and wave propagation, as interaction with the Earth environment, lay the physical basis for understanding and extracting geoscientific information. Study of electromagnetic waves with remote sensing application has become an active and interdisciplinary area. This book presents some new progress on the theoretical and numerical approaches for information retrieval of the remote sensing via EM scattering and emission. We begin in Chapter 1 with the vector radiative transfer (VRT) theory for inhomogeneous scatter media. The VRT takes account of multiple scattering, emission and propagation of random scatter media, and quantitatively leads to insights of elucidating and understanding EM wave-terrain surface interaction. Meanwhile, it is extensively applicable to carrying out data interpretation and validation, and to solving the inverse problem, e.g. iteratively, physically or statistically. In Chapter 1, iterative solutions of multiple scattering and emission from inhomogeneous dense scatter media, and inhomogeneous non-spherical scatter media are discussed. Three-dimensional VRT equation (3D-VRT) for spatially inhomogeneous random scatter media for high resolution observation is also investigated. The polarimetric imagery of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) technology is one of most important advances in space-borne microwave remote sensing during recent decades.

This book is about Dr. Jin Tong Wang’s collected research works included: 1) Brillouin “Small Angle, Right Angle and Backscattering”. There were achieved three significances, a) smallest angle scattering in the world at that time. It was a world record; b) discovered from small angle, right angle and backscattering results, the sound velocity was not a constant with the same phonon mode. It actually depends on the phone frequencies. At that time, no one in this field didn’t know how to interpret it. Based on the results in the study, published a paper in Physical Review B in 1986; 2) By the support of Office of Naval Research, we created quite a few navel Ferro-piezoelectric materials. We have done experiments on ferroelectricity, piezoelectricity and pyroelectricity measurements. Based on the experiment we have some intriguing findings; 3) We also work on theories on several topics. First of all, we proposed a displacive- order-disorder (DOD) ferroelectric transition model for para-ferroelectric phase transition mechanism. The paper was published in the well-known European journal “Ferroelectrics”. The DOD phase transition mechanism clarified the long-time dispute whether the para-ferroelectric phase transition was displacive or order-disorder one; 4) Derived an Accurate Formulation of Faraday, Magnetic Circular Dichroism (MCD) and Kerr Effect of Light in Ferro-electromagnet.; 5) published several papers in the frontier of quantum mechanics including: the red shift of photon frequency in gravitational potential; the mechanism of electron photo emission; the unification of classical mechanics and quantum mechanics; the origin of quantum particle entanglement and quantum wave packet tunneling. Some papers have caught attentions by physics communities; 5) two patents created by author. One is microwave-plasma and plasma torch gasifier. It is intended for graduate courses on related topics, e.g. Computer Vision, 3-D Computer Vision, Graphics, Artificial Intelligence, etc. The book is mainly based on my lecture notes for several undergraduate and graduate classes I have offered over the past several years, while a number of topics stem from my research publications co-authored with my students. This book takes into account the needs of learners with various professional backgrounds, as well as those of self-learners. Furthermore, it can be used as a reference guide for practitioners and professionals in related fields. To aid in comprehension, the book includes a wealth of self-test questions (with hints and answers). This book presents the development of an optimization platform for geotechnical engineering, which is one of the key components in smart geotechnics. The book discusses the fundamentals of the optimization algorithm with constitutive models of soils.
