The three Conley boys, Jack, Jim and Frank were sons of an Irish immigrant family, raised along the banks of the Susquehanna River in Maryland. After the death of their father when Frank was but 18 months old, the family relocated to Carroll, Iowa. During the same time, the newspapers were filled with stories of the U.S. Army and their campaigns against the combined native tribes in Montana and the Dakota Territories. The exciting and dangerous stories which celebrated the lives of those involved, was a call to action for all three boys. Montana Territory in the 1870’s and 80’s was a hostile environment where road agents, horse thieves and “bad men” infested the roads and towns alike. Native tribes were at war with settlers attempting to encroach on their lands, and the advent of the railroad brought a new species of troublemakers to towns along the Northern Pacific route. Other than a rare visit from one of the few U.S. Marshals assigned to the territory; the presence of lawmen was scarce. An unusual responsibility fell upon the few, fearless officers whose mission it was to enforce the law and maintain order, largely upon the force of their own edicts. The job of anyone with a badge, was filled with danger. A lone officer who would attempt to track down a criminal within the huge expanse of the territory, was a fearless man indeed. There were many desperate men who thought little of killing anyone out to bring them to justice. The more efficient and fearless an officer was, the more challenging and dangerous was the job. Legendary lawman Tom Irvine became the first elected sheriff of Custer County which included the town of Miles City. Irvine was the right man for the thriving and wild town, but the awesome and dangerous job of sheriff required deputies with experience, tested courage, and the confidence to handle whatever problem that came their way. Prior to his election as sheriff, Irvine worked alongside Jim and Jack Conley when they served as packers and guides for General Nelson Miles during the Indian wars. Irvine knew of Jack and Jim Conley's capabilities and was successful in recruiting both as his first deputies. Seventeen-year-old Frank had just arrived in Miles City and had always dreamed of working with his brothers, so he approached Irvine for a job. Irvine hesitated as he could not recall a deputy as young as Frank in the territory or any of the surrounding territories. But then again, there had never been brothers quite like the Conley boys. Frank was well over six foot at the time, had broad shoulders, a trim waist, powerful build, a mature manner, and appearance. All three of the brothers, especially Jim, were known as expert marksmen with the pistol, rifle, and shotgun. Jim assured Irvine he would vouch for Frank and be there if needed, to look out for him. Irvine trusted Jim’s judgement, “If Frank is half the man, you and Jack are, Jim, I believe he would make an excellent lawman. Besides, there is only one way to find out.” Sheriff Irvine was not disappointed, nor were the other lawmen and communities the Conley boys served over the next forty years. Jack and Jim both became effective and respected Sheriff's, stock detectives and U.S. Deputy Marshals. Young Frank became one of the longest serving Prison Wardens and city mayors in the United States. This is a story based upon real events, characters, and the lives of three remarkable brothers and lawmen: Jack, Jim and Frank, The Conley boys of Montana.

The reader is taken through a short course on explosive engineering and the chemistry of explosives. A brief history of bombings provides insight as to how improvised explosive devices were used to shape history and how the situations of the early 1900s are repeating themselves today. While many believe that suicide bombings are something seen only in the Middle East, this text explores the suicide bombings in the U.S. and the motivation of the bombers. Various profiles of several famous bombers such as the Unabomber and the Mad Bomber are reviewed along with other psychological issues that might inspire bombers. The use of bombs to disperse radioactive materials in the radiation dispersion device configuration is addressed along with the technique used to disperse chemical and biological agents with explosives. Booby traps, especially those targeting law enforcement, are explained, and methods to detect booby traps are developed to allow a rudimentary understanding of the process. Methods to identify clandestine laboratories manufacturing explosives or other drugs such as methamphetamine are identified providing the reader with an understanding of the items to identify and differentiate the types of laboratories. Numerous bombings are examined providing an insight as to why and how the attacks were successful. Mitigation techniques such as using alcohol resistant aqueous film-forming foam to suppress blast and fragment formation are explained along with deployment methods. The text is richly illustrated with photographs depicting IEDs, explosives, and booby traps to assist in the identification of suspicious objects, suspect packages, or potential mail bombs. The book provides and overview that those involved in law enforcement, security, and counterterrorism will find elucidating and beneficial in bomb-related operations and mitigation efforts.

It was the bodies that were always the problem for Elmer Zakk. Long after death, his targets could still finger him. If he spit on an enemys corpse the DNA would track him down. The bullets were just as bad and could point lead fingers right back to his favorite weapons, a brace of 9 MM pistols never far from reach. He loved those guns and couldnt throw any away. The art of forensic science had been sharpened to the point where the long-term career potential for a contract killer was becoming bleak. Then he had the idea that turned it all around. What if the victims simply disappeared in a puff of smoke? The germination of his plan came after having a beer with a bio-hazardous medical wastes truck driver. Zakk was curious about the biohazard emblem on the mans uniform shirt. The driver explained that with the AIDS situation, any medical process that involved body fluids of any kind required all the collateral material to be incinerated. He hauled bags full of materials he didnt ever want to identify and it all ended up as a fine ash byproduct. Zakk tracks down the owner of the waste disposal firm, a Mister Eli Aragon. He saw that Aragon was not greedy enough to settle for cash so he stalked Aragons family. The two men sit down over drinks after an arranged golf match. Zakk starts to describe Aragons family setting to him, just to prove Aragon is vulnerable. When the man resists Zakk vows to first kill their dog and then make the young son disappear. Aragon capitulates. Zakk is given a fake title and now frequently visits Aragons office. He visits to keep tabs on Aragon but also to be near Sally, Aragons attractive assistant. Zakk feels that she wants him, in spite of her protests. At the office, Zakk has suspicions about Fred Belmont, one of the route drivers. Belmont asks too many questions. Zakk finds an ideal helper in Thad Stravinski, a cashiered medical student working at an animal research lab in an industrial park. Thad sports a bright red mop of hair worn in Einstein fashion and stays stoked up on a testosterone overload to the point where he has the morals of a cactus plant. He longs to stick anyone anytime. Thad has no problem hacking up dead animals or human corpses and putting the chunks in waste disposal bags. But Thad also has a secret. He cuts the spent rounds from the victims heart and puts them in a test tube with an amputated little finger and a carefully printed label documenting what he knows about the body. Zakks business is in high gear. He meets, greets, and murders a corrupt politician in Tallahassee. He is struck by the irony of the man extending his hand for graft payment and receiving a Zakk payment instead. His next target is a peacock of a man. The kind of man opposite enough from Zakk to make killing him a pleasure. Theo Stramboulis is tall, dark and polished to a masculine brilliance that has women following his every move. But Theo loves cards more than women. When he is cheated by Cuban gamblers in Tampa he vows to never pay the debt. Zakk gets a contract on the Greek. He watches Theos movements to choose the right time and place for the hit. He notices the slim young man who is seldom more than a few feet away from his uncle. The youth, Christo, worships the man as he would his dead father. The next day, Christo cant find his uncle but fears the worst. In Orlando, a henpecked dentist goes berserk and murders his shrewish wife. For the last time, the two are nude in the shower while he slices and dices her body to fit into the bio-hazardous waste bags. The bloody slaughter scene forever scars his psyche as he borders on insanity. The killing is unrelated to Zakk except that it signals the start of his downfall. Things are changing in Zakks l

The first thought, when contemplating a new study of the Great Western Railway locomotive fleet, must surely be to ask what can there be left to say? But there is no single source which gives a general introduction to the Great Western locomotive fleet. There are monographs on individual classes, an excellent multi-volume detail study from the RCTS, and superb collections of photographs, but nothing that brings it all together. This work is intended to provide that general introduction.The volume begins with a series of short essays covering general trends in design development, whilst the main body of the volume covers individual classes. For each class there is a small table containing some principal dimensions and paragraphs of text, covering an introduction, renumbering, key changes in the development of the class and information on withdrawal.The volume concludes with appendices covering the development and types of standard boilers, the various numbering schemes used by the GWR, the arcane subject of locomotive diagrams and lot numbers, and a short reference on the many lines the GWR engulfed.The majority of illustrations are new profile drawings to a consistent format. Described as sketches, they are drawn to a consistent scale, but do not claim to be scale drawings. Much minor equipment has been omitted and the author has certainly not dared to include rivets! Although most are based around GWR weight diagrams, they are not simple traces of the original drawings. Detail has been added from other sources, components copied from different drawings and details have been checked against historical and modern photographs. One must also bear in mind that steam locomotives were not mass produced. Minor fittings frequently varied in position and changes were made over the locomotives' lifetimes. Nevertheless, this collection of drawings provides a uniquely consistent view of the GWR locomotive fleet.
