Innocents Abroad is a memoir, although the original purpose was to preserve for my children and grandchildren two Logs which described forced marches across Poland and Germany while I was a Prisoner of War during WW II. I obtained two War Time Logs and filled them with day-to-day accounts of our forced march out of Stalag Luft III in Sagan, Germany (now Poland) in January 1945 and later our march from Nurnberg to Moosberg, Germany. I discovered these logs in 2004 in my bookcase, 60 years later. They were written in pencil, barely legible, sometimes under dreadful weather conditions. I decided to copy them before they became completely unreadable. I have read many accounts of the forced walks prisoners made during the winter of 1945. I found them fascinating, but most of them were written many years after the event. As I read my logs, I realized it is the only day-by-day account of the hardships encountered by the 12,000 prisoners. Later when we walked out the Nurnberg the numbers swelled to over 100,000. I received considerable encouragement from the Secretary of the 467th Bomb Group Organization to enlarge the scope of the account to include a biographical account of my life leading up to my experiences as a POW and of my life following WW II. I didn't become a member of the 467th Bomb Group Organization until they held a reunion in San Antonio, Texas. Since that time I have not missed any of the reunions. At these events, I have met many children who had a parent who served in the 467th Bomb Group. They have expressed keen interest in reading this account since it may also parallel the experiences of one of their parents.

Drawing from a wide range of contemporary sources, Apostles of Inequality argues that such attempts, driven by a flawed faith in the wonders of capital, did little to increase agricultural productivity and instead led to a century of increasing impoverishment in rural England. Jim Handy rejects the assertions about the benefits that accompanied the transition to "improved" agriculture and details the abundant evidence for the efficiency of smallholder, peasant agriculture. He traces the development of both economic theory and government policy through the work of agricultural improver Arthur Young (1741–1820), government advisor Nassau William Senior (1790–1864), and the editors and writers of the Economist, as well as Adam Smith and Thomas Robert Malthus. Apostles of Inequality demonstrates how a fascination with capital – promoted by political economy and farmers’ desires to have a labour force completely dependent on wage labour – fostered widespread destitution in rural England for over a century.

The area known as Manatee County opened for settlement at the close of the Second Seminole War in 1841. This was due to Congress's passage of the Armed Occupation Act of 1842, which allowed settlers to claim 160 acres of land at a cost of $1.25 an acre if they were able to bear arms and live on the land for five years. It wasn't long before settlers appeared up and down the beautiful Manatee River, led by Josiah Gates and his family on the south side. Many of his friends had suffered losses with the collapse of the Union Bank in Tallahassee and were anxious to join him. The opulent shores on both sides of the river quickly enticed other settlers to make their claims, offering a cornucopia filled with some of Florida's best resources for growth and prosperity. This volume provides a pictorial account of those lives, which were caught in the struggle to carve out a niche against all odds in a place that faced epidemics of yellow fever, malaria, typhoid, and a third uprising of the Seminole Indians. In 1861, Florida seceded from the Union, which was followed by the Civil War with a Union victory in 1865 that brought an end to slavery and plantation ownership.

The story is enhanced by the inclusion of 285 illustrations, most of which are previously unpublished, that depict logging, railroading, and sawmilling activities, and 17 period-specific maps that give the reader a unique perspective on the growth of the company. The lumbering industry was pivotal to America’s settlement and development, reaching its zenith in the period covered by this book, which shows how Oregon-American’s survival depended on successfully adapting to great changes in market forces and in industry structures, to natural disasters, and to economic crises like the Great Depression. Essential to the company’s objective of supplying lumber to markets in the Midwest farm belt was its relationship with the Great Northern and Northern Pacific Railroads; accordingly, the book provides much information on the railroad networks that made timber extraction possible. The study is based on fifteen years of archival and on-the-ground research and draws heavily on the extensive collection of Oregon-American records, notably the correspondence files of Judd Greenman, the company president who conceived and executed most of the company’s operating policies. It also includes, as sidebars, engaging oral histories related by employees, which enrich the text and provide a vivid contrast between management and employee viewpoints.
