This is the unlikely story of how two young kids accidentally find each other and go on to produce a vibrant, dynamic family and a life that can only be called a true love story. But no one really knows the private lives of other people, so I have nothing to base this on except my observations. I can't help but think our union is way above the norm. How many couples start out that early in life and get to spend an entire lifetime as lovers, best friends, and playmates? When I see so much suffering in life, I often wonder who has paid for mine. I think I am the luckiest man ever.

When the United States officially entered World War I in 1917, it was woefully underprepared for chemical warfare, in which the British, French, and Germans had been engaged since 1915. In response, the U.S. Army created an entirely new branch: the Chemical Warfare Service. The army turned to trained chemists and engineers to lead the charge—and called on an array of others, including baseball players, to fill out the ranks. The Gas and Flame Men is the first full account of Major League ballplayers who served in the Chemical Warfare Service during World War I. Four players, two club executives, and a manager served in the small and hastily formed branch, six of them as gas officers. Remarkably, five of the seven—Christy Mathewson, Branch Rickey, Ty Cobb, George Sisler, and Eppa “Jeptha” Rixey—are now enshrined in the National Baseball Hall of Fame at Cooperstown, New York. The son of a sixth Hall of Famer, player and manager Ned Hanlon, was a young officer killed in action in France with the First Gas Regiment. Enos Jones of Augusta County, Virginia, was the son of Robert Jones & Anne Coulston of the Welsh settlement of Gwyndd in what is today Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. They were Friends or Quakers if you prefer, as were the majority of the first settlers of Gwyndd, fleeing from the religious intolerance of 17th Century England. These early Quakers were soon joined by a host of 18th Century settlers from Germany, France, Ireland, Scotland, Wales and England who also contributed their unique heritage to the growth of our country's culture. They were quickly followed by others from almost every corner of the world. Around the time of the American Revolution, Enos Jones and his wife Lydia, daughter of Palatine Germans, packed up their family and, along with Lydia's brothers, made their way west into the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. The following generations moved on west in search of new lands to farm stopping in Ross County, Ohio, then Linn County, Iowa, and finally in Page County, Iowa where the tale ends.
