Sharing with the Gods examines one of the most ubiquitous yet little studied aspects of ancient Greek religion, the offering of so-called "first-fruits" (aparchai) and "tithes" (dekatai), from the Archaic period to the Hellenistic. While most existing studies of Greek religion tend to focus on ritual performance, this volume investigates questions of religious belief and mentality: why the Greeks presented these gifts to the gods, and what their behaviour tells us about their religious world-view, presuppositions, and perception of the gods. Exploiting an array of ancient sources, the author assesses the diverse nature of aparchai and dekatai, the complexity of the motivations underlying them, the role of individuals in shaping tradition, the deployment of this religious custom in politics, and the transformation of a voluntary practice into a religious obligation. By synthesizing a century of scholarship on 'first-fruits' practices in Greek and other religious cultures, the author challenges prevailing interpretations of gift-exchange with the gods in terms of do ut des and da ut dem, which emphasize the reciprocal, obligatory, and sometimes commercial aspects of the gift, and explores hitherto neglected notions including gratitude and thanksgiving. Drawing on current approaches to gift-giving in anthropology, sociology, and economics, in particular the French anthropologist Godelier's idea of 'debt', the volume offers new perspectives with which to conceptualize human-divine relations, and challenges traditional views of the nature of gift-giving between men and gods in Greek religion.

Additionally, the pathologist needs to know many pitfalls and freezing artifacts in each organ and the clinical implications each diagnosis may result in. Frozen Section Library: Head and Neck will provide a convenient, user-friendly handbook to expedite use when performing intraoperative consultations on head and neck specimens. This book will be 5 X 8 and is estimated to be about 200 to 250 pages in toto with 100 to 150 color figures. An organ and clinical scenario based approach will be used in this book. This book will be divided into chapters based on the organs and anatomic locations. Within the chapter, a consistent format with the critical issues as a focus will be used including the frequently encountered clinical scenarios and the specific questions from the surgeons, frequent diagnostic considerations and their major diagnostic criteria with associated diagnostic pearls, artifacts and pitfalls and how to avoid them. Common and practical problems including reactive atypia versus carcinoma in salivary glands, resection margins in tongue and laryngectomy specimens, small blue cell tumors in the base of the skull, a primary lesion versus a metastatic squamous carcinoma in the neck, etc. will be illustrated with color pictures and accompanied legend. As a handbook for practicing pathologists, this book will be an indispensable aid to diagnosis and avoiding dangers in one of the most challenging situations that pathologists encounter. Rapid consideration of differential diagnoses and how to avoid traps caused by frozen section artifacts will be readily accessible to the users of this handbook. Tables and charts will provide guidance for differential diagnosis of various histological patterns. Jim Heaney was born an Irish-Catholic alcoholic. He remains one today. However, he has been sober for the past 21 years. No one has yet found a cure for the Irish-Catholicism. This story begins in a tiny house in Jacksonville, Florida, and ends in a slightly larger one in Columbia, South Carolina. Residences in central Florida, Indiana, Liberia, Georgia, Pennsylvania, England, Zaire (now Congo), and Kansas follow in that order. Much of Dr. Heaney's life involved battles. His most difficult ones were within himself. He struggled with low self-esteem, academics, addiction, religion, and infidelity. Several of these skirmishes are ongoing. In his youth, he learned to his distain that "dilettante" referred to someone who dabbled in the arts and academics. Someone who knew a little about a lot. During his twilight years, Jim came to realize that he was that dilettante for whom he'd had low regard. Yet age had allowed him to accept that dabbler and, hence, himself. The older he became, the more he realized the less he knew.
