A YOUTH SOCCER COACH'S INVESTIGATION INTO THE ORIGINS OF SOCCERMANIA Before his son enlisted for a season of Youth Soccer at the neighborhood Boys and Girls Club in College Park, Maryland, Jim Haner was just your typical white, middle-class, suburban father. And as an award-winning journalist for The Sun (Baltimore), he was more likely to write about scoundrels than soccer. But his son caught the bug, and before long, Haner was giving pep talks to nine-year-olds in shin guards and cleats and the game had become an all-consuming obsession. Digging deep into the historical record, Haner sets out to document the soccer craze from the bottom up, tracing the rises and falls in the game's popularity in the decades since "Mob Ball" fever was spread by the influx of immigrants on our shores, up to the current wave of "soccermania." The result is a rollicking and timely read. " Haner's] enthusiasm and good humor is infectious, the history is genuinely interesting, and anyone who doubts that soccer games between nine-year-olds can be chronicled with the same verve and intensity of professional or collegiate sports need look no further . . . Belongs with Franklin Foer's How Soccer Explains the World (2004) as a must-read for people puzzled by soccer's popularity." --Booklist (starred review)
This book is the fully revised and updated second edition of Power System Dynamics and Stability published in 1997. The modified title Power System Dynamics: Stability and Control reflects a slight shift in focus from solely describing power system dynamics to the means of dealing with them. The book has been expanded by about a third to include: a new chapter on wind power generation; a new section on wide-area measurement systems (WAMS) and their application for real-time control; an overview of lessons learned from wide-spread blackouts affecting North America and Europe in 2003, 2004 and 2006; enhanced treatment of voltage stability and control, and frequency stability and control; application of Lyapunov direct method to analyse and enhance stability of multi-machine power systems ; expanded coverage of steady-state stability using eigenvalue analysis, including modal analysis of dynamic equivalents. The book continues the successful approach of the first edition by progressing from simplicity to complexity. It places the emphasis first on understanding the underlying physical principles before proceeding to more complex models and algorithms. The reader will appreciate the authors’ accessible approach as the book is illustrated by over 400 diagrams and a large number of examples. Power System Dynamics: Stability and Control, Second Edition is an essential resource for graduates of electrical engineering. It is also a clear and comprehensive reference text for undergraduate students, and for practising engineers and researchers who are working in electricity companies or in the development of power system technologies.
James Robert Freels Jr., (Bob) along with his girlfriend, Maureen Wilkin, on June 21,1985 abducted my eight year old grandson, Jimmy. It wasn't until June 30, 1985 that the abduction was realized because Jimmy was supposedly on vacation with his father. Deborah (Debbie) Freels, my daughter, and Bob had been separated for almost a year. Debbie had custody of their two children, Jimmy, age eight and Dawn, age twelve. After eight months of searching, the trail led to Guatemala, Central America. If it weren't for strangers and incredible luck, the search would not have been successful. The last month was spent by me in Guatemala, which I described in my notes as "30 Days of Hell". This is a true story of my experiences.

Introducing a four-step framework to creating engaging and innovative visualisations, it helps you to: · Find the human stories in your datasets · Design a visual story that will resonate with your audience · Make a clear, persuasive visual that represents your data truthfully · Refine your work to ensure your visual expresses your story in the best possible way. This book also includes a portfolio of best-practice examples and annotated templates to help you choose the right visual for the right audience, and repurpose your work for different contexts.
It's not every day you get to meet someone who is entirely willing to give up everything and move to a country twelve time zones away. That's exactly what Don and Alta Warren did. Don was a successful businessman in the heating and cooling industry in southern California. Understanding the call of God to minister to soldiers in the war torn country of Vietnam, 'Mom' and 'Pop' sold their business and left their family behind to open a servicemen's center in a hamlet called Vung Tau. Arriving in the country at the height of American's troop count of 500,000, they stayed until there were no more GIs to minister to, nine months before the South Vietnamese government fell in 1975. Because of their hearts, God was able to use them to not only minister to troops but also to the Vietnamese people who desperately looked for hope in the God who never forgets. The Tithe of Their Lives shares the story of two lives poured out over the course of a lifetime to the glory of God.
Soccerhead is youth soccer coach Jim Haner's investigation into the origins of soccermainia On July 10, 1999, 100,000 Americans, mostly women, did something they had not done before, at least not in such numbers. They showed up to watch a soccer match. Their attendance at the 1999 Women's World Cup Final took the world by surprise, forcing it to recognize much about itself that it had been in denial of for quite some time. Who were these soccer fans? Where had they come from? Why had no one noticed them before? Award winning journalist Jim Haner asks these questions, and others, as he sets off in search of the origins of the American passion for soccer, uncovering the game's roots in an early industrial Northeast and following them up through the transcontinental suburban present. But Haner is by no means a passive historian of the game; he is the coach of the Hornets, a rag-tag team of ten nine-year-old boys and one determined little girl. Haner provides us with an intimate view of his team's struggles and successes over the course of season, and of his own transformation from reluctant soccer dad to authentic 'soccerhead'. Seamlessly weaving personal and historical narrative threads, Soccerhead is both an enticing memoir and a cultural inquiry of the first-order--enlightening, entertaining, and informative--shedding new light on a little known chapter of American history.
