In The Boundaries Dissolve, Jim Owen, now in his late seventies, seeks to interpret, in both his essays and poems, some of life's encounters he has experienced over the last decade from the perspective of an evangelical Christian. Quite often he moves from the very personal to a universal application or understanding. The essays are more theological in content, working with an idea that has troubled his thoughts, seeking to understand the providence of God that not only satisfies him intellectually, but also stimulates the mind of his readers. His poetry, as might be expected, is more personal and existential responding to the moment of encounter, trying to capture the impressions that will interpret the events before they fade. His poems cover a broad spectrum from the whimsical to the somber, from the purely imaginary to the tragedies of real life, but behind all of them he is a Christian trying to interpret a world desperately in need of the gospel yet oblivious to it. Christmas takes center stage as George demonstrates the true meaning of Christmas, spreading the Christmas spirit to his family, guests, and community. George does meet his teenage love interest, Emily, and a happy and sad relationship begins. It looks like George and Emily are okay, but Emily lands a prestigious job traveling abroad. She has realized her lifelong dream, and George cannot be part of it. Working this out entails a bit of drama. Are there wedding bells in their future?

Will his nose, ears and eyes have shifted places while he slept, his face forever scrambled, rearranged? Riots and war. Conscription. The fights, the violence no longer just yarns heard late at night. Drafted at eighteen, he has to decide, will he go halfway round the world to kill people he has no earthly quarrel with? Considers conscientious objection. His girlfriend bluntly asks him when he became a pacifist. You can’t, she suggests, the minute you get drafted, suddenly announce yourself as some kind of Instant Gandhi. Not, anyway, and expect a Draft Board made up of World War II vets to buy it. Teaching in a tiny mountain town. Some kids, he’s told early on, are just too dumb to bother with. Signing on for a salesman’s pay. Hit your quota or hit the road. Logic of a kiss, that sprung free promise of what life can be, the one constant throughout. A better way glimpsed, lost and found, here and gone. Pitchman’s blues.
