When Meriwether Lewis began shopping for supplies and firearms to take on the Corps of Discovery’s journey west, his first stop was a federal arsenal. For the following twenty-nine months, from the time the Lewis and Clark expedition left Camp Dubois with a cannon salute in 1804 until it announced its return from the West Coast to St. Louis with a volley in 1806, weapons were a crucial component of the participants’ tool kit. In Weapons of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, historian Jim Garry describes the arms and ammunition the expedition carried and the use and care those weapons received. The Corps of Discovery’s purposes were to explore the Missouri and Columbia river basins, to make scientific observations, and to contact the tribes along the way for both science and diplomacy. Throughout the trek, the travelers used their guns to procure food—they could consume around 350 pounds of meat a day—and to protect themselves from dangerous animals. Firearms were also invaluable in encounters with Indian groups, as guns were one of the most sought-after trade items in the West. As Garry notes, the explorers’ willingness to demonstrate their weapons’ firepower probably kept meetings with some tribes from becoming violent. The mix of arms carried by the expedition extended beyond rifles and muskets to include pistols, knives, espontoons, a cannon, and blunderbusses. Each chapter focuses on one of the major types of weapons and weaves accounts from the expedition journals with the author’s knowledge gained from field-testing the muskets and rifles he describes. Appendices tally the weapons carried and explain how the expedition’s flintlocks worked. Weapons of the Lewis and Clark Expedition integrates original research with a lively narrative. This encyclopedic reference will be invaluable to historians and weaponry aficionados.

Social dominance theory argues that the major forms of intergroup conflict, such as racism, classism and patriarchy, are all basically derived from the basic human predisposition to form and maintain hierarchical and group-based systems of social organization. In essence, social dominance theory presumes that, beneath major and sometimes profound difference between different human societies, there is also a basic grammar of social power shared by all societies in common. For the last nine months, the US government has expended enormous effort and resources in an attempt to find and capture an element of a program that was removed from an ultra-secret facility located beneath one of the numerous hangers at the Naval Air Station/Joint Reserve Base (NAS/JRB), Fort Worth, Texas. The genetic embryonic nucleus enhancement program’s singular successful product, code named Gene, was removed by trusted members of the staff and set free. The problem became how to retrieve their ‘product’ and keep the information about its genetic abnormalities, as well as the program itself, from the public. After months of no progress, news of a potential sighting of one of the people thought to be involved invigorates the government’s efforts. Butch North had found Gene walking along a road north of Fort Worth. Believing him to be one of the numerous illegal immigrants searching for day labor, Butch took him to his stables to help while his normal stable-hand took a few days of vacation. The next day, members of the facility at the NAS/JRB learn Gene’s location and send a team to capture him. When they arrive and find Gene gone, they take Butch and his daughters back to the facility for interrogation. After listening to what he knows are lies about Gene, Butch vows to keep him safe and defy the government’s orders to help them find their missing product. That leads to a long running chase through the country from as far north as the Red River and down into Mexico as Butch and some of his close friends attempt to deny the government’s attempts at recovering Gene. Once they discover that Gene has fathered a child, the hunt intensifies with renewed vengeance. Butch and his friends must now protect not only Gene, but his child and the mother.

DNAlien II is the continuation of the story concerning a secret government program that developed a unique being from experiments with alien DNA and human embryos. The being they produce from the project, known as GENE (Genetic Embryonic Nucleus Enhancement), is part of the ongoing research of captured or crashed UFOs and the recovered bodies. Following Gene’s escape during the World Trade Center attacks in 2001, he is befriended by Butch North, a citizen of Aurora, Texas,. While the US Government mounts a nationwide search, Butch tries to hide Gene from the intense efforts the government puts into his capture. They use every asset at their disposal, including satellite coverage, phone taps, vehicle trackers, and transmitters secretly placed throughout his home and vehicles. While they try to determine where he has been hidden, Butch and a small group of close friends work together to keep Gene safe. The matter is further complicated when Gene is introduced to a woman named Leslie and they become involved. As the search expands to include her, Butch must ensure both of them are removed from the rural area just north of Ft Worth, Texas. Throughout the search, Kevin, a very close friend of Butch, becomes the primary protector and is given the responsibility for their lives. When Leslie becomes pregnant, Butch and Kevin are forced to develop plans that will protect them after the baby is born. The government finally learns of Gene and Leslie’s location, and once again they must try to flee the area before they are captured.

Upon winning the CMA Book Award, Wedding Clothes and the Osage Community was praised as “a book that transcends its subject matter and helps us all see the possibilities of museum anthropology.” This study of the Osage Nation’s foundational cultural practice begins with an in-depth examination of the Mízhin form of marriage, which bound two extended Osage families together for economic, biologic, and social reasons intended to produce value and community cohesion for the larger society. Swan and Cooley then follow the movement of Osage bridal regalia from the Mízhin form of marriage into the “Paying for the Drum” ceremony of the Osage Ilonshka—a variant of the Plains Grass Dance, which is a nativistic movement that spread throughout the Plains and Prairie regions of the United States in the 1890s. The Ilonshka dance and its associated organization provide a spiritual charter for the survival of the ancient Osage physical divisions, or “districts” as they are called today. Swan and Cooley demonstrate how the process of re-chartering elements of material culture and their associated meanings from one ceremony to another serves as an example of the ways in which the Osage people have adapted their cultural values to changing economic and political conditions. At the core of this historical trajectory is a broad system of Osage social relations predicated on status, reciprocity, and cooperation.
