Jim Elmslie traces events in Irian Jaya/West Papua from the departure of the Dutch in 1963 to December 1999. The majority of the indigenous people of the area consider themselves West Papuans living in the land of West Papua, a country incorporated into the Indonesian state without their consent or approval. Made up of Melanesian peoples, the western part of New Guinea is one of the least developed places on earth with the largest expanses outside the Amazon of untouched and, in some cases still unexplored, rainforest and wilderness. It is a region ripe for economic exploitation. Irian Jaya under the Gun chronicles the rapid changes that are taking place under the guise of Indonesian economic development and its generally pro-crony, pro-military, pro-multinational corporation, and anti-Papuan thrust. It describes what can happen to an indigenous population when insensitive governments and avaricious multinationals are more concerned about profits than the environment or the people inhabiting the land.

It paved the streets and embankments of London. It was used to build bridges over the Thames. It was carved into monuments for kings and commoners not only in Britain but all over the world. None of it possible without the men that toiled in those quarries and yards. This is the story of those granite men and their industry.

Conventional economic thought focuses unduly on the functioning of so-called "free-markets." The persistent influence of social structures, institutions and practices - and the unequal extent to which differing social constituencies are able to exert power through those structures - often receives short shrift in this traditional research. However, this volume makes a significant contribution by helping to reverse this trend. The chapters, all written by top economists from around North America, address a range of topical issues, utilizing a rich variety of methodological techniques from empirical investigations to game theory and opinion surveys. Furthermore, the book, which is dedicated to the memory of David M. Gordon, has as its unifying theme the incorporation of structural analysis into economic science - an important goal for academics and students alike.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Jim Davidson is a Christian businessman and a native of Gould in Southeast Arkansas. His career as a public speaker, author, and motivational consultant has spanned more than forty-five years. Some of his many awards and achievements include: Arkansas Salesman of the Year, Chairman of the Little Rock Chamber of Commerce's Diamond Club sales organization, Justice of the Peace in Pulaski County, Chairman of Speakers Bureau of the Pulaski County United Way, Leadership Gavel recipient as voted by members of his Dale Carnegie Class, and honorary member of the DECA & GCE Clubs of Arkansas. He has also been presented with the "Good Neighbor Award" by the Conway Area Chamber of Commerce and is the 2010 "Distinguished Service Award" winner for Conway Public Schools. In November 2013, Jim was given a Senate Citation and the Conway Community Service Award by Senator Jason Rapert during a ceremony at the Faulkner County Library. In 1980, Jim began writing and producing a daily radio program titled "How to Plan Your Life." It has been broadcast by over 300 radio stations coast to coast and heard by thousands of people each weekday. Later, in 1995, he also began writing a weekly newspaper column for his hometown newspaper, the Log Cabin Democrat, in Conway, Arkansas. With over 375 newspapers in thirty-five states running his column since its inception, it is believed to be the most successful self-syndicated column in the history of American journalism. Jim was a staunch member of the Conway Noon Lions Club for over 20 years, holding every leadership position and winning all their awards, including twice being named a Melvin Jones Fellow, the highest award in Lionism.
